Derrick Walker enters Transfer Portal

Who was he supposed to displace considering we were loaded at his position.
I'm surprised he contributed as much as he did playing 5 minutes a game.
Knocked down a 3-pointer in eight games this season; 9 of his 14 baskets have come from beyond the arc this season
Finished with five points and a steal in win against Mississippi State (3/5/19)
Converted a four-point play in UT’s victory over South Carolina (2/13/19) at home
Gave the Vols solid minutes off the bench in win at South Carolina (1/29/19); had two points and a rebound in 14 minutes of play
Posted six points on two 3-pointers and recorded a pair of assists vs. Wake Forest (12/22/18)
Matched his career high in scoring with six points on a pair of threes in UT’s win vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12/2/18)
Posted a solid performance off the bench in win vs. Eastern Kentucky (11/28/18), with four points and a career-high three rebounds
Made his season debut against Louisiana (11/9/18), scoring two points and pulling down two rebounds in the victory.
Sat out the season-opener vs. Lenoir-Rhyne (11/6/18) with a sore hamstring.

He shot very well from 3. No doubt

As I said I think it's him or Pons. I don't see both making impacts

I think that's worth a discussion. I'd say the same think about this guy from arizona state in year one. Very unlikly to give that immediate impact and that's all I was saying all along

And I don’t think I ever said he’s a huge impact guy day 1? My guess if they take him is that they really like his long term potential...and given that our 2020 board with posts is thin that could be something they were looking ahead to.

I’m curious if they will take him and ORN, that would be 2 front court guys that are largely unknown.

Cutting bait is certainly worth discussing with Johnson. I like his potential but the clock has been clicking a long time. Imo I'd cut bait with he or Pons. There isn't room for both to thrive and grow in my mind

Already state the reasons Burns is different

Yea I would be perfectly fine with cutting Kent lose. I think the reports about his progress were made to nudge walker out the door
Walker isn’t blind, if he was beating Kent every day handily I don’t think he’d worry much.

I guess we are not communicating about what you meant here

There’s a long list of guys who have redshirted being contributors the following year, need examples?

Imo if grant is gone we have to get 9-10 pts a game from one post player. That isn't going to be an easy find and imo a kid that redshirted on a decent team last year isn't going to be able to do that

That was in response do your general comment about nobody being a contributor after redshirting...didn’t mean this guy would be all league in year 1, it simply meant that statement was foolish, which it was.

And I don’t think they’re taking him with that being their thought, that seems to be what you’re missing.

Well I can't think of any successful team that didn't have a post player that didn't score close to double digits. Im
Sure there are some out there but I can't see a Barnes team being successful without one

Anyone know if any of his teams at Texas had success without such a scorer ?

They have to have bodies. It appears from what you posted this morning that Walker was the last one on the totum pole.
Right, but you’re saying you don’t believe Kent was ahead of Walker...I’m saying why would the staff make it up, wouldn’t they nudge low man out, that being Kent according to you? Why push a better player in Kent out?

How do you define successful?

You realize what I think doesn't matter.
It's what the staff thinks

Tourney team
I’m guessing there’s been plenty of tourney teams without a double digit point post player....with that said, if we don’t have a dominant 30mpg guy it’s very possible we don’t have a double digit ppg post guy. Fulk/Kent/Burns/Plavsic could all average 15-20mpg and say 5-8ppg, wouldn’t be an issue imo.

Yea if all 4 do that it's a good collective effort.
I don't see it though

If Walker wanted to be a better player he would have worked hard to get better. Apparently he didn't.

You must push yourself. You gotta have ambition and drive to succeed. Coaches can't do it all.
