Roster Changes

They said the same thing about Draymond. Grant could easily drop 15 pounds and get to 225. And improve his agility working out full time with NBA trainers and no school. The question is gonna be can he defend and he’s shown he can handle guards on switches.

Speaking of grant defending

He's the best defender I have ever seen at jumping straight up on the air and defending the rim without fouling. Never seen a guy do it so much without fouling

I could be wrong, but I just don't see that kind of draft potential in him. I don't think he's quick or athletic enough to play and defend the 3, and the 2 and 4 are out of the question imo. I hope we are able to get some quality details and reporting from the upcoming combine, but I'm not holding my breath.
Do you follow mock drafts? Or watch much NBA?

He is in the late teen early twenties in most mocks. He is as big as a bunch of 4s. And also I'm sure he is at least 6'6. NBA guys listed as 6'7 are his height or shorter. He is ok for today's NBA. 15 years ago he wouldn't have had a chance though.

The draft guys think if you hit fts you can be taught to shoot. That isn't a factor.

Also Grant can pass really well. Teams look for guys that can move the ball.

He's a great passer but looking to much for the fancy pass lately. His TO against Auburn late in game 1 hurt badly and today way too many passes that I thought he should have looked to score on

I'm not going to underestimate what Grant could do in the NBA. He'll face more, better defenders, but he also shouldn't have 3 or 4 of them collapse on him every time he touches the ball.

No doubt Bone and Williams will go through the evaluation process same as Admiral did last year. Turner and Bowden might even do it to see where they need to improve. But I'd expect they're both more likely professionals on another continent.

I do wonder about Bowden. I feel like he's got pretty good size and length. NBA developers are amazing, and Bowden may have enough for them to work with. Maybe.

Grant Williams is closer to PJ Tucker than anyone else being mentioned on here. The others are borderline laughable. Athleticism, defense and size are certainly working against him. I do agree that his draft stock will not improve after this year.

A little early to dig deep into who might leave, but I heard a couple of things from the talking heads in the media.

I didn't notice, but was DJ Burns dressed out and on the bench during the SECT?

Many on here and Mark
Griffin think that Zach Kent will be gone. I've wondered if sitting him out has been to get a 2-year medical hardship. Maybe it's also so that he could play immediately next year if he were to transfer... I really don't know that rule. If a player sits an entire year at their current school do they also have to sit out an entire year at a new school? And what we really don't know is if his injury is a chronic situation and it is preventing him from playing. If so, then a medical scholarship could be in play. He'd stay at UT with a scholarship that doesn't count against the 13 and give up BB.

Does Bone stick around? Does Grant stay?

Might Turner leave as a grad transfer? He came in with Kyle and Admiral, so he could potentially graduate and have options.

Jaken Johnson? Is he happy with limited minutes as a role player? He's used up his redshirt however.

Walker, Jr? Another unknown. He seems like he's very well liked. Will he take a big stride forward?

I'd be very surprised if Fulk were to leave. Like JJ, he's already used his RS/MHW year. He's been getting a fair amount of minutes as well.

I guess that's everybody other than Bowden. Hometown kid. Little risk of him moving on IMO.
I just don't see what the motivation would be for a guy like Turner to grad transfer. He already plays for a contender. He already is a major contributor. What more could he be looking for?

I don't expect it to happen. I just list it as a possibility since he's academically a senior this year. If he did it could be because he thinks he could lose minutes to the 3 signees, but he has an advantage over them of 4 years in the system versus less than a year for James, Pember, and Gaines.

Another possibility could be that he's needed as a backup PG and he could want to stay in a shooting guard spot. But he's a little small as a SG in a major conference. He has however shown that his defense usually is suitable for the current level.

Grant is first round in most mocks. He will not be coming back. It would be a terrible decision if he wants to play in the NBA. If he has a good tourney run he is and should be gone.
I just don't see Grant in the first round. He comes back to finish what he started. JMHO as always

I don't see his minutes being reduced. I thin he will continue to split time at the 1 and 2 splitting time with Bone and Bowden. Josiah James will get some minutes there, but may be most needed at SF his first year.

There just doesn't seem to be the motivation for that move from Turner, plus I think he genuinely loves his teammates. Would be tough to leave them for an equal, at best, situation elsewhere.

In the same vein, it's tough to find the motivation in Burns leaving unless he is simply unhappy. And if he is, it sure doesn't show on the bench. He's wasted a RS season if he transfers, and he's walking out on immediate playing time at the 5 for a top 15 team next year.

I am curious as to his absence from the bench though. His twitter is still Vol-heavy.

I think Grant and Jordan Bone might be the type of players to really have loyalty to Barnes and the program and without a deep, deep tourney run might come back next year. No doubt, they'll both get evaluated by the NBA scouts just like Admiral did last year.

If they come back, it will be Bone, Turner, Bowden, Grant, and either Fulkerson, Derrick Walker, or DJ Burns starting.

Josiah James, the two other post players, Jalen Johnson, and Pons will be the bench contributors.

Barnes will have to play more guys next year.

If Bone and Grant go pro, then it might be Josiah James starting and two of the three aforementioned post players starting.

JMHO

Turner averaged 30 mpg this year. Even it was reduced to 22-25, he shouldn't be upset. I'll be shocked if he left as a grad transfer. His opportunity to contribute at TN next year is nearly certain... even if James, Gaines, and Pember make significant contributions.

I'm mainly concerned about Burns not being with the team. If the walk-ons weren't there either it'd be easier to understand. Perhaps he's the latest to have caught the flu bug. I just wish there was information.

Josiah will start over Turner or Bowden. Also, I would like to see the Vols get a grad transfer center that is a good defender and rebounder.

Starting for Barnes doesn't necessarily mean much. Who gets the most minutes is a sign of his trust in you. That said, I have a tough time seeing Josiah playing over two seniors with 3 and 4 years experience in Barnes system. He would have to be some kind of special and a very quick learner and developer.
