lol So your take is that no SEC team has hired an OC who hasn’t coached at the P5 level? lol I’ll give you one that you dismissed because of your limited lol recall...Gus Malzahn in his lol first incarnation...straight lol out of high lol school to lol Arkansas! Run lil Forrest!

lol

Glad you read my post about Malzon

My take is simple. It's extremely rare for an SEC team to hire a cordinator without power 5 experience. For that reason Friend is much more qualified for our OC job than Osovet. Both have some risk but Osovet is much more risky

I would be. He’s a great recruiter. Not just good. He might literally be the best recruiter we’d have on staff and that’s saying a lot.

I also like the fact that he’s so young (34). That leads me to believe he’ll be able to relate to and motivate the players and that he’s still evolving his offensive style. I think he’d be very experimental.

I think McClendon would be willing to take the gig for a substantial raise not because its a better program @BassmasterVol #moneytalks

I just don’t get the thought of Sharkboy. Just because he was an OC at Alabama and had good numbers he’s a good choice? The numbers above are pretty clear that anyone can step in and OC that team and do well. His Florida teams were trash. Colorado State and Fresno State aren’t really resume builders either.

They backed the truck up for an unproven guy why not for one of these guys that you know what you get. Make Kingsbury the highest paid OC in college football or suck up the pride and get Freeze.

I wasn’t necessarily advocating Osovet over Friend...just not dismissing it based on some flimsy prerequisite requirement set down by a message board poster.

I initially was adverse to Shark. But he helped build it at Bama from the start with little Nick. That was a good point I had not thought of. Regardless, Bama recruited and obviously still recruits well. If this staff gets the talent then they will be fine and a guy like Shark will do ok as well. Pruitt wants the kind of O he wants and will hire accordingly. With that said, Enos would be nice.

My thought on the OC hire is I’m all in with whoever Pruitt gets. If that’s Friend or Freeze. Pruitt has forgotten more about football than I’ll ever know. Therefore in Pruitt I trust. As bad as VolNation wants to win, I can guarantee you Pruitt wants it worse and he is held accountable if it doesn’t work out. He will get the best guy that he feels can help us win.
I agree our coach knows way more than us and I hope they hire who will mesh with the coaches game plan and recruit well.

I think vol nation is tired of the “hire a home run mentality, only to watch our admin settle for more of the same”

I see it this way... if we don’t finish this recruiting class strong, and the coordinator is a promotion or a head scratcher, expect more of the same.

But the truth is, we have to start beating teams like Vandy and Mizzou before we even have a chance against Florida, Georgia, Bama.

We just need a recruiter and decent enough coach to get us consistently beating the low and mid tier before we get flustered about top dogs.

I wanted Enos last year. I think he’s a good fit. Like you said, just doesn’t seem likely.

McElwain would be fine with me but I wonder if he’s content to hang around until another low level HC job comes open.

I think McClendon is the guy.

I’m also good with McClendon

Do you have any statistics handy on how McElwain’s Bama offenses have compared to other Bama OC’s. I have a hunch, but haven’t seen the data

I will look but he was our OC when were very run heavy and we won 2 NCs during that time. Again it was about ToP and in the 2009 SEC CG against UF I believe we had the ball on offense for almost 40 minutes. Basically the goal was to run the ball and keep Tebow on the bench.

I would be fine with McClendon. I think it is more likely that he interviews so that he can get a raise and stay at South Carolina.

@HankHill has the goods. I’m not so much disputing him as pointing out that’s it’s interesting that we’re getting different info.

I believe in the guy I’m getting info from and I believe he’s got good sources as well. There are a ton of possible reasons different messages are going out.

Disinformation by UT admin is always a likely reason.
