Josh Dobbs (merged)

No changes made to QB's in Steelers' updated depth chart

Ben Roethlisberger is the No.1 quarterback, followed by Landry Jones, Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph.

I expect Dobbs to get chance because of injury. Just as was the case here at Tennessee. Wasn't Dobbs 3rd on the depth chart after Worley and Peterman as a sophomore. And it took injuries to both (or very poor play from Peterman) for Dobbs to get his chance and then when Dobbs took over he never looked back. And then we spent the next few weeks asking Butch Jones why Dobbs was starting from the jump.

Same thing will happen in Pittsburgh. Steelers will carry 4 QBs this year on the roster. Big Ben will get injured sometime between Week 1-6. The coaches will put Landry Jones out there. He will play awful or get hurt himself. Finally they will be FORCED to play Dobbs. He will light it up just as he did at Tennessee in 2014. Steelers will win the Super Bowl with Dobbs as the starter. And then people will spend the entire off-season wondering why Dobbs wasn't named the backup after his strong pre-season and why it took Landry Jones falling flat on his face for him to have a chance.

This is simply the way Dobbs story is supposed to play out.

I'd be willing to bump our avatar bet up to next week and base it on the Steelers keeping 4 QBs.

I know Dobbs is winning the Super Bowl this year. I don't know what the Steelers will do. Them keeping 4 QBs is simply my best guess on the situation right now. If I was the Steelers, I would just go right ahead and release Landry Jones but they're not smart enough to do that. Plus this is his final year on contract so I doubt there are many trade partners out there interested in trading for a garbage backup QB on his final year. Dobbs has played too good for the Steelers to think he will clear waivers if they release him. Also the Steelers are a pretty conservative organization. They don't just give up on their draft picks one year after drafting them unless the guy is a complete disaster. Dobbs has more than proven he's worthy of staying on the roster thru 2 preseason games. And finally, they have too much pride to just cut Rudolph right now. They don't want to admit they made a mistake.

Putting all that together is why I think they bite the bullet and keep 4 QBs this year. I'm guessing they will plan to let Landry Jones walk next year and then let Dobbs and Rudolph battle for the backup job in 2019.

So are you taking the bet or not?

Dobbs probably won't get to the Super Bowl this year without tickets. Now, to correct you on a previous statement, Dobbs did anything BUT light it up when he was brought in to play at UT. In fact, he was a true freshman and was pretty bad his first year. So much so he didn't earn any PT until more than half way through his Sophomore season and even then he was doing ok. 2015 was when he started to really blossom into a real QB.

Back to the Steelers, stop pretending that if ANY team, Steelers or otherwise, doesn't put their franchise out there just to keep Dobbs on their roster that they are dumb, stupid or otherwise not as smart as you. That staff is BY FAR more knowledgable about managing QBs, judging QB talent and roster management than you will ever be. Dobbs is a better athlete than the other three but the other three are better passers than Dobbs and probably overall better at reading defenses and decision making. The Steelers aren't going to hold on to a guy, much less give him starts, knowing that every game he plays the givens in life move to death, taxes and a Dobbs INT.

I actually agree that if you cut anyone, it should be Jones. He's 29 and not the worst backup to have, but you shouldn't just throw Mason or Josh away so quickly after picking them. But even Steeler fans seem to predict Josh getting cut right now. Doesn't mean it's the right thing to do, but oh well.

Steelers 53-Man Roster

Steelers wouldn't have sat Jones, and relegated Dobbs to the second half of the game, playing against Green Bay's scrubs, if they believed that Dobbs was ready to back up Roethlisberger.

Uhhh, wut? The Steelers are trying to win a Super Bowl and a consistent backup who won't give a game away with turnovers is what they need. Jones may never come in and throw for 300+ and 4 TDs but he is what they need as a backup. Dobbs hasn't shown the ability to make correct reads consistently and the fact he was brought in to start the second half against a squad made up of 3/4 scrubs should tell you what the Steelers braintrust is seeing in Dobbs every day of the week in practice too.

Apparently the Steelers feel like he gives them the best chance to win if Ben goes down. In fact it's pretty crystal clear they feel that way. And getting rid of a 4th round QB after 2 full training camps isn't exactly that big of a deal, especially if they feel he isn't showing them enough to put more time into developing him.

I get sometimes coaching staffs miss, but I'm willing to give the franchise that has won the most Super Bowls the benefit of the doubt that they know what they're doing here.

Agreed, it appears the Steelers are giving Dobbs the opportunity to audition for another team.

Dobbs completion percentage in the preseason is nearly 68%. Mason Rudolph is at just 50%. Even if you wanna give him the excuse that he's a rookie, Dobbs had a higher completion percentage LAST YEAR than Rudolph currently has.

How can you say that statement when it is directly contradicted by the preseason games we've seen thus far?

All I have to say is, the same arguments were being made in 2014 as to why Josh Dobbs should not start ahead of Justin Worley and Nathan Peterman. People were saying the coaches know better. They were saying he must be awful in practice. Even though the only football people saw from Dobbs before that 2014 season was the Spring Game of that year when he absolutely tore it up. Very much like this preseason but he didn't get a chance to play until the other 2 QBs ahead of him got hurt. And as they say, the rest is history.

Look for the same thing to happen in Pittsburgh. You guys are right. Its obvious the Steelers brass doesn't think Dobbs is ready to be the backup. You guys think this is them being smart. I think its them being stupid. Dobbs has already shown far more in 2 preseason games than Landry Jones ever did. But NFL coaches are conservative by their nature. They'll go with what they know over what they don't. With that said, I expect Big Ben to go down with an injury like Justin Worley. Then I expect Landry Jones to get rolled out there like Nathan Peterman and struggle mightily. Because of injury the Steelers will be FORCED to play Dobbs. He will then go ahead, LIGHT IT UP like he did at Tennessee in 2014, and have all the Steelers fans wondering why the team didn't let him play earlier.

This season will be a repeat of 2014 for Josh Dobbs.

Just going to gloss over the 2013 season for Dobbs huh? But ok, Dobbs had a 9/6 TD-INT ration in 2014 so we'll see how far that takes him for any team. But far beyond the stats in pre-season, you keep disregarding the obvious. The two picks for Dobbs were just bad decisions and the one against the Packers was a throw he has consistently shown he can not make with any level of consistency. He doesn't have the arm for it. On top of that, Dobbs "lit it up" (your words) against third stringers fighting for a spot on the team and rookies. He hasn't looked nearly as good as you give him credit for in the preseason and no, if the Steelers cut him, they aren't stupid, they are just being a front office and coaching staff doing the best for their team. Again, your knowledge of QB play would fit in a piss cup and it still wouldn't be enough to hit the minimum line.

I mean, the fact that you think Dobbs "lit it up" in 2014 tells me all we need to know

Unless Big Ben goes down with an inury in the next 9 days, Dobbs won't be around to replace him.

You may be correct on this. Dobbs didn't win a playoff game or Super Bowl in 2014 either.

Your mistake (as well as most fans and media) is you keep assuming Dobbs is only competing with Landry Jones for a roster spot. And if the coaches favor Landry Jones as the backup right now then that means Dobbs if gone.

In reality Dobbs is also competiting with the 9th offensive line, 8th defensive back, 7th defensive lineman, and so on. The Steelers are not just gonna release a 23 year old QB that they spent a 4th round pick on a year earlier, especially when he shows the promise Dobbs has shown just to keep a 9th o-lineman that doesn't have Dobbs potential. You do know this is Landry Jones final year under contract? You think the Steelers are gonna resign him next year at a much higher cap hit than Dobbs will offer in Year 3 on a rookie deal?

Mike Tomlin has already alluded to potentially keeping 4 QBs. He's said he believes they have 4 NFL QBs on the roster. Like I said earlier, if I had to guess, I think the Steelers will keep 4 QBs this year with the idea of letting Landry Jones go next year and letting Dobbs and Rudolph competing for the backup job in 2019.

As long as Dobbs continues to show the improvement he's shown these past 2 preseason games, the Steelers will keep him on the active roster. They're not dumb enough to release a 23 year old QB with a 100+ QB rating, 67% completion percentage, and 3 passing TDs in just 3 quarters of preseason action. They're simply gonna go 1 less at some other position and keep 4 QBs.

Aren't you the same person who was chastising people for, in your eyes, comparing Mike Tomlin to Butch Jones? And now because you need all the help you can get in your "arguments", you're doing the same thing.

GM Kevin Colbert makes the personel decisions on the Steelers not Mike Tomlin.

No, he's really not.
