Josh Dobbs (merged)

Okay let's be fair here, let's apply that same criteria to every single QB currently on a preseason roster playing for a spot. How many QBs realistically meet that criteria? Honestly, not very many QB1s even meet that criteria. The Browns, Jets, Bills, etc. have been asking themselves which QB can they rely on to execute and win for practically a decade now. Half the league has a franchise QB and the other half either has a suspect QB1 or some pretty awful backups that have shown nothing to separate themselves. Dobbs has shown enough so far throughout his first 6 preseason games to at least put himself in the conversation as a quality 2nd string option and maybe even worthy of an experiment as a starter to see what he provides.

Very few QBs are ready to succeed from day 1 in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers didn't take a regular season snap for several years. I don't think Dobbs has been in the league long enough to for us to say he is or is not an NFL QB.

Off the top of my head...

Jimmy Garoppolo (when he backed up Brady)
Jacoby Brissett
Nick Foles
Landry Jones
Brian Hoyer

Dobbs isn't a day 1 QB, he's a rookie in his second year, who in spite of making some good plays in the preseason against journeymen, scrubs and rookie players, still struggles to read defenses, still under throws his receivers, and struggles to maintain any semblance of consistency.

He's a great guy, but he's never exhibited the traits of most successful NFL quarterbacks. He's not capable of being a solid 2nd string NFL QB yet, and he's not going to improve on an NFL practice squad. His only option is to snag a 3rd string spot, and hope that the team has a phenomenal QB coach to help him improve on his deficiencies. Had the Steelers not drafted Rulolph, then Dobbs might have survived for another year, but they are going to cut him, and I don't know how many NFL front offices are looking to spend money or draft picks on a 3rd string project QB.

So you listed 5 total QBs. During the pre-season each team typically has about 4 QBs on roster. So 32 teams. You do the math. And I don't think many NFL franchises would throw Brian Hoyer out there and expect to win. Landry Jones is suspect as well. It took everything he had to beat the 0-16 Browns in the final week of the season last year.

The point I am making is you have already written Dobbs off after 6 total preseason games when he has shown more than enough to justify being a 2nd string option for a lot of teams. The NFL has some exceptional QB play right now but it is extremely top heavy. Once you sift through the greats, you are stuck with a plethora of mediocre to terrible quarterbacks that have bounced from team to team as a career backup.

EDIT: It does not take an extensive examination of all 32 rosters to see that very few teams have a reliable back-up QB, if any. Garoppolo has now moved on to San Fran. Nick Foles is probably the only prime example and he could start for several teams that don't have a QB right now. Brissett did well during his short stent as a starter while Brady was suspended, but he was surrounded by some of the best talent on the NFL and the clear best head coach in the NFL. I would be interested to see how he does on another team.

Five backup QBs that a HC could put in the game to win. If you need more, here's a list of all 32 NFL teams' backup QBs ranked.

I haven't written Dobbs off, Mike Tomlin wrote Dobbs off when he drafted Mason Rudolph, sat Landry Jones, and relegated Dobbs to the second half of pre-season games. Can you separate yourself from your emotional attachment to Josh Dobbs because of his VFL status, and honestly suggest that Josh Dobbs could be reliable backup QB on an NFL team given his preseason performances?

Practice squad is not going to help Dobbs improve, it's only going to delay his exit from the NFL. At this point he has to land a 3rd string spot or better.

Yes, I can separate. That is why I have said previously that WHEN he gets cut because there is no room for him on the roster, he will be picked up by another team desperate for a backup and immediately become their 2nd string. One can suggest that he isn't NFL starter ready (as I have) and believe he has the potential to be a solid #2. The Titans are a great example. Look at how that team fared the moment Mariota went down. They were miserable. Dobbs could easily compete for a spot there as a backup if he were to be released from Pittsburgh. Lord knows Touchdown Jesus isn't getting it done for the Titans.

Dobbs does have one fan in the team organization that I think it's somewhat important. That is Roethlisberger (I wanted to see if my voice to text translator worked on that name-it did). All indications are that they have developed a good working relationship with each other.

And boy did Josh look good last night.

I think the white Steelers jersey suits him better than the black ones cause of the undershirt he wears. His gear looked clean out there on the field last night. He also looked tall. I know he's listed at 6'3" and Rudolph listed at 6'5" but you wouldn't know that watching on TV. Dobbs looked taller than him on the field.

It was the best Josh has looked to date in the NFL. I hope he continues to look like this.

lol what????

Whenever he’s banned, there’s so much more time for activities! Air smells better...food tastes better!

I used to like D4H. Then he got annoying. Now I like him again. He's the most impressive troll I have ever seen. He actually works hard to argue his points, and even with his weird love for Dobbs, I can't hate on a guy who tries as hard as D4H does.

"Impressive troll?" Do you hear yourself dude?

Nothing wrong with arguing your point, it's the condescending ******** that comes with it.

D4 is a clown, nothing more.

Oh absolutely. But he's an entertaining clown, and he has been insanely persistent to keep up the D4H act. The dudes username was meant to make a claim Dobbs can win the Heisman. Dobbs never got close, and D4H could have moved on, yet he is still beating the same dead horse 4 (?) years later.

What's funny is he tries to pad the troll game with statements like "Josh Allen has Greatest of All Time Potential" or that "Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are clearly the two best QBs in the draft" when CLEARLY those two statements are fallacy. He does work hard at this as evidence by his draft threads he puts together which, I don't know what he does for a living, but I know for me with a job, a business to run and a business degree to finish up, I don't have the time to even do all the typing much less watch the YouTube highlights to see which guys look better in their uniforms to figure out which ones go to the top of the list.
