Dan Mullen thread (merged)

Starting to wonder if Kelly was successful because of Frost ?

Lol. Lets look at this, Frost wasn’t the OC during Kelly 4 year tenure at Oregon.

So I find it hilarious that Kelly had a 46-7 record because of a WR coach.

I would say go get Matt Campbell (Iowa State) .... HANDS DOWN.........he will be the next SUPERSTAR coach...........just check his resume.........and did I mention that he beat 2 TOP FIVE teams while at Iowa State..........wait, I SAID IOWA STATE!!! Do you know how bad IOWA STATE is..... they have a WHOLE roster of 1 and 2 star players.... and maybe, just maybe he has up to ten - 3 star players.....

So we want to hire the next SUPERSTAR coach Matt Campbell,? And how many years will it take for him to reach that level you have given him?2, 3 .4 yrs. We don't have yrs. Maybe 8 months .That's what I figure it will take gruden to turn it around.... GO VOLS :)

All of you who want him would be livid and saying fire "Dan" after the first loss to UGA, FL and Bama.

So true..I want gruden, but it would be the same for him...BUT if they beat UGA, FL, Bama, they would be considered a savior. So sooner than later were gonna have to except nobody is perfect. well maybe saban is in some eyes. Hopefully we get a top tier coach and turn this around, until then fire butch jones. GO VOLS

Mullen, or any other COMPETENT coach for that matter, should be able to get to 8-4/9-3 minimum next year with our schedule.

Remember when James Franklin had back to back 9 win seasons at Vandy? Took them to 3 straight bowls in 3 years. AT VANDY. And few wanted him here, too. He was right in our back yard and easily obtainable. Mullen is just like him. Just waiting on an opportunity at a place he can win big. Sigh, I'm sure Florida or Arkansas will beat us to him, as per the usual.

It will likely be the gators if they want him. Stricklin was his AD at MSU. I understand they had a good relationship, so I would imagine if Stricklin goes after him, and he enjoyed working under Stricklin at MSU, that would be tough for Currie to overcome. But hopefully Currie could get him in Knoxville for an interview. He might really like the town, the campus, the facilities. Also can hope that UF looks elsewhere. I believe Frost is there #1 choice because he is currently already in Florida and developing HS contacts, but Nebraska could come calling this year as well. But I don't know if it is Scott's dream to coach at his alma mater, but if he is pragmatic then he realizes that this is not 1997 and Nebraska will never return to its glory, and has no recruiting base. UF is far and away the better job, IF you are ready to deal with the expectations.

I would be shocked if Arkansas is searching this season. Beliema has a large buyout and is Jeff Long's guy. Unless maybe Arkansas loses out I don't see it happening.

I have been a Vol fan all my life but I have lived in MS for 20 years and follow MSU closely. Trying to compare Mullen and Jones statistically is absurd. Here is the difference, Mullen actually develops talent and starts with much less than Butch has had to work with. He does not typically get 4, 5 star players. Nor does he typically start a lot of Freshmen. He works players through his system. He is a friggin' QB whisperer. Nobody wanted Dak or Fitzgerald as a QB. He did and look what happened. He could polish JG into a beast, Butch is a walking cliché. Look at the 5 stars that are not getting better at UT, ie, McKenzie, Richmond, and Warrior.
Mullen has done more with less for years. I believe he could do even more with more. Doesn't matter, my money is on him going to FL

Will look for the link but Bielema’s buyout is not big at all. There was wrong info posted earlier this season that he had some monster buyout. However, after December 5th or 6th, it drastically decreases.

If Florida hires Mullen, which they probably will, and he never wins the division in three years, are they going to fire him like they did to the guy that won the division twice?

Florida has some of the most unrealistic expectations of any program in the country and the job is overrated.

Can pull off some upsets, some good seasons, but record against ranked teams is terrible and overall record isn't that great. Peak is 9 or 10 wins.

That’s what happens when you coach at MSU.

Actually, no no no it’s not. He’s over achieved at Mississippi State given the program history.

Mullen is a Boy Scout. He’s not gonna lie to university and unlike Mac, he has a proven track record of developing offenses and QB’s.

I call BS.

We can’t complete a forward pass. Is that too much to ask. Florida has less TD passes than Navy or Georgia Tech and they run the triple option.

Winning games against other teams that suck doesn’t impress anyone. And the truth is (and I never denied this) Florida has been lucky as hell to win several of the games they have. Mac could be 0-3 vs. Butch Jones for crying out loud.

You know they are a bad team and have been a bad team. Winning the SEC East is like winning the AFC South

Every volnation thread has “Hire Mullen”posts so I thought it would be interesting to take an objective look at Mullen:

Mullen is 6-21 against top 25 teams. He’s never beaten Bama and never won the sec West. In fact, in 8 seasons at MSU, he’s only finished greater than 2nd in the SEC West one time, every other season has been 4th or worse... in 8 seasons he’s only had above .500 record in SEC play 1 time.

His best season and only season to achieve 10 wins was 2013 when they went 10-3 and lost in the Orange Bowl. That was in year, wait for it..... 6 at MSU

Year 1 record - 5-7 (3-5 SEC)
Year 2 - 9-4 (4-4 SEC)
Year 3- 7-6 (2-6 SEC)
Year 4- 8-5 (4-4 SEC)
Year 5- 7-6 (3-5 SEC)
Year 6- 10-3 (6-2 SEC)
Year 7 - 9-4 (4-4 SEC)
Year 8 - 6-7 (3-5 SEC)

An objective look at his numbers suggests Mullen and Butch are cut from the same cloth. Average 8-4 consistent coaches.

8-4 seasons at the poorest University in the SEC is almost a miracle. He would kill it at UT or Florida with their facilities, resources and budget.

Mullen at a big time football school would be like Franklin at Penn State. Top 10 seasons. I'm glad we're getting Gruden, but Florida will bounce back quickly if they get Mullen.

Never forget how bad Miss State is as a program. Historically the worst in the SEC. Vandy and Kentucky have a higher winning percentage. Ole Miss is the state school, MSU is little brother. Alabama and LSU pick the state from the east and west as far as top recruits go. Him getting them to #1 in the country, even for a week was an amazing accomplishment. He also coached against the toughest division in college football history the past 10 years.
