Recruiting Forum Talk XXXIX

Yeah if it’s an uninspiring hire than I’m going to dial back the level at which I’ve been following UT football and just limit myself to reading few preseason mags, checking the recruiting class on signing day and watching the games on Saturdays. Been spending way too much time following it all so closely and I’m not sure what I’ve gotten out of it. I know much more about the inner workings than I really need to know.

...but if we hire Gruden...

Seriously though. If we hire Gruden I might have to check myself into an addiction clinic or something. I would be physically incapable of stopping myself from reading Vols news every waking minute of my life for at least the first 3 years of his tenure. And then it would go down to only every other minute.

None..so? How does anybody know he wouldn't have that year? He managed to win one with the Colts, so..

With Peyton Freaking Manning as his QB 😁

Gruden won a super bowl with a team that the previous coach couldn't win a super bowl with and you guys can't take that away from him. After that the team was in terrible cap shape and that was a HUGE deal in those days before the cap grew to be astronomical like it is today. Not to mention the fact that the Bucs gave up a kings ransom in draft picks to get him. Losing 2 first and 2 second round picks hurts.

He coached TWO different NFL teams to great success.

Someone on TOS is saying Peyton is the intermediary between UT and Gruden. Supposedly is a cousin to Cindy that is posting that.

If true that Peyton wants Gruden at UT then I like our chances. What if Gruden wanted Peyton to be OC/QB coach. This fanbase deserves something like that. We have put up with enough garbage for the past 10 years. it's time for something great to happen to this University.

Lol if you had any idea How big of a micro manager butch is... you would know that no one under him has much say so.

Yeah because Butch's mico-managing totally made our last two OCs revert to Madden-esque playcalling with telegraphed playcalls, predictable formation usage, and a complete lack of misdirection.

We'll see how many more opportunities Scott gets to run an offense after this season. Dude just isn't cut out for it. Might be a good CEO type of HC one day. Will never be a good OC or playcaller.

I am not trying to take that away from him. I've already said that he is a good coach, and I disagreed with Wick that he was a horrible coach. I just don't think he is..or at least was..a "great coach". I do think he made some horrible personnel decisions that are troubling to me as it pertains to his ability as a discerner of talent, which is a big deal in CFB recruiting.

I don’t feel bad for Butch but this is a tough job. It’s a grind and he gave it his best.

It’s just not up to the Tennessee standard.

So the Gruden thread had a Brohm rumor . Not very popular over there. Thoughts?

If it isn't a proven name like Jon Gruden or Chip Kelly, the only up and comer I'm willing to accept is Scott Frost.

If the UT administration hires Brohm it lets me know winning is no longer a priority for Tennessee football.

IMO you have to get Gruden, Kelly, or Frost. Those are the only options that can make Tennessee a national power once again. Otherwise we might as well get used to irrelevance.

Wouldn't worry about not being fired yet. I think most people in Currie position would rather not send an interim to Bama. Let Butch tske anoither best down and then let interim coach take over after with better chance to win.

I don't think Gruden is some superhuman coach, but he would school pretty much everyone in the SEC regularly in terms of Xs and Os. Doesn't mean he would win every game. But his football acumen laps everyone else in the conference, and I imagine his assistants would be significantly better than we are used to. Imagine the best of Kiffin and Dooley's (early) staffs and that's about the caliber he'd have, IMO.

Him coaching in the East would be like sending Doc Rivers to coach in the Sun Belt or something.

And the third Saturday in October would be fun again.

We had Dobbs. Lol do you remember how many piss poor plays he bailed butch out of by making people miss or extending plays.
