Makes Curries decision not to fire him more puzzling. You have to think that the recruits gave Callahan permission to say thatThis is incredible if true. Typically recruits get mad when the coach that has been recruiting them all this time is possibly let go. These guys seem to want it to happen and still go to UT. Just goes to show Butch Jones isn't the recruiter people try to make him out to be. Tennessee recruits for itself.
Lets get a real coach in here that will actually let our players play up to their talent level.
I'm glad that didn't happen because we would have another years worth of fool's gold tricking us into thinking Butch Jones could actually coach.
Its good for this program that Butch Jones was exposed this year. We need to move on from him and hire a real coach rather than a gym teacher (as Colin Cowherd said).
I'm on the Frost train. He doesn't let up. I can't remember a coach at UT that would step on the opponent's throat while gutting them at the same time, but Frost is that man it seems. I've watched from Majors to present, and none have had that mentality.
I think the crux of what's getting to everyone is that we have talent on this offense. JG, John Kelly, Brandon Johnson and Marquez Callaway are more than enough to score a damn TD. I've seen it done with less. And yet we can't get it done.
Unlike most of you I disagree that the problem is scheme. It's the damn play calling. The scheme itself is fine, it's quite flexible and has been different under each OC, but the calls we're getting this season blow donkey balls.
I think that ultimately that was the fault of choosing QD and Scott adapting to pro-style concepts while still trying to learn spread concepts. I think QD was chosen early and the offense was adapted to him but when QD failed to meet expectations the hodge-podge offense that was crafted out of pro and spread concepts was left a mess.
I hope we stick with JG and go back to an offense similar to what Debo ran. JG fits that perfectly, especially as Debo was adept at mixing in pro and spread concepts. We'd see a lot of the shots downfield Dobbs took last year. Ironically, if you look at the numbers we let QD pass more than all other SEC teams save one. There's no reason not to loosen the reins on JG now and allow him to learn, grow, and develop.
We literally have nothing to lose this season. If the coaches care about these kids, and I think they do, they need to focus on letting them develop. They know it's the end of the line for themselves but they can (and some will) keep doing good by the players.
One day, Champions of Life, Five-Star Hearts and Leadership Reps will be etched into Butch Jones coaching tombstone, but its two perfectly benign slogans Own It and D.A.T. Way that ultimately exemplify Jones current undoing at Tennessee.
A head coach who takes responsibility? Details and Accountability?
Uh, Bueller?
After Saturdays 15-9 loss to South Carolina, Jones remains the Volunteers head football coach. For how much longer is unclear after Jones dropped a game many of note deemed critical for his future.
The Vols are 3-3. They havent scored a touchdown in 10 quarters. Theyve dropped seven of their last nine conference games and are staring at a date with the Bama buzzsaw next Saturday.
Whats Coughlins Law from Cocktail? Everything ends badly. Otherwise it wouldnt end.
Theres a joylessness around this football team right now, and it starts with Jones. Three weeks ago, Tennessee suffered a 41-0 beatdown at home to No. 5 Georgia, but hysteria on Rocky Top has hit its crescendo because Saturdays loss was worse.
For the second straight year, Tennessee had two weeks to prepare for a mediocre South Carolina team and lost.
...
I'm still on the ropes about a lot of these receivers. There's a couple of still shots from the last pass yesterday. JG threw a perfect pass and surprise, surprise, another drop. That was the most catchable incompletion all year and it was dropped. With the game on the line. That's why our coaches have no faith in our receivers.
I get the feeling this fan base is not going to accept another budget hire. The AD better get this right. I'm not sure a Frost or Brohm is going to get it done.
However if they end up with one of those type coaches and people still buy their tickets and donate their money, they'll sit back and count their cash and chuckle.
