So your saying he could have a very good year next year and win the east, but that he will leave on his own accord because he is tired of being a coach at a big time university and all that comes with it? Interesting. This means you must have some personal insight into his mindset. Do you sit behind him at church, are you his neighbor, maybe your kids are friends with his kids? Please tell us more about how CBJ is feeling.

Also, by definition a lame duck has no control over what happens next, but you are saying he would leave on his own accord. Makes zero sense.

Not sure you have to know someone directly in order to gauge their nature. He is a public figure, and there is enough video, audio, plus "insider" nuggets out there that you can put the pieces together. If he was ready to leave this year, (despite his success in rebuilding a program) but Purdue wasn't able to afford the buyout, why wouldn't he leave next year (after another successful season). SEC isn't for everyone, as Urbs proved almost a decade ago. Butch wants out. It's human nature, it's critical thinking, and there are other options in the wings whom people affiliated with the program would rather see fill the HC position.

As for the lame duck definition I'd encourage you to buy a new dictionary. But I'll agree that we shouldn't use the term lame duck as it is typically in reference to a political office rather than a head coach position. Buy for the sake of argument, lame duck is convenient and demonstrates the point.

Why not? Florida won it this year. No reason we can't be as good as they were this year.

If it were in Neyland I would think we'd have a chance but I think we lose to the Gators in the swamp.

I think our losses will be to GT, AL, LSU, GA, and FL and maybe one more depending on injuries. Another year like this in injuries and it could get ugly.

Under your scenario we fire him before we play LSU.

Is Butch perfect? No. Some of the criticism is justified but the complaints about how he has lost his touch in recruiting is ridiculous.

ESPN has our class as #11. That seems to be what everyone is quoting. One site averaged the other and came up with #9, from an #8, 2 #9s and that #11. Given the disappointments this year and that neither the coaches' poll nor the writers' poll even had us ranked, a composite top ten, or even an almost top ten, is a represents a decent job of recruiting.

Also, this staff has found a 3* or two with an upside that others failed to notice. And again, recruiting for particular needs may have an effect on our ranking.

Wow. Late move. Think Cal will look to UT a second time?

This was one of the jobs that I thought could be in the market for Butch if it came open. I was expecting Dykes to get hired to another job and not get fired though. Has he done bad there?

Are you really using early January class rankings to prove your point?

I didn't think he had but I've paid zero attention to Cal since we played them in 2007. Oregon fans are much better hosts, BTW.

I think Cal fits the profile. But I also think Ron is right in that this might be a mutual fit with Chip Kelly.

Didn't realize Dykes has been there 4 years. He's 5-7 this year. I knew they had a decent year last year.

Why wait til January to fire him? They must have their eyes set on someone. Maybe Kelly is a possibility.

Could also explain why you wait a month and a half after your season is over to fire your coach. Someone (chip) becomes available late and you change your plans.

Should be about results on the field ATP. Not recruiting classes.

If it's close, I think it should factor in. I'm talking about if it's an 8 or 9 win regular season, not 6-6. Obviously if we're 6-6, the class ain't going to be that good anyway.

Cal is in an even worse debt situation than we were a few years ago. I don't know if they have the money to hire Chip Kelly or pay any decent sized buyout

Cal fires head coach Sonny Dykes | FOX Sports

Yup. Sounds like they already have their replacement...

The Texas native, son of former Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes, came to Cal after three seasons at Louisiana Tech, where he went 22-15.

A search for Dykes’ replacement is expected to begin immediately, with hopes the school will have its new coach in place before the end of this week when recruiting heats up again.

With Sonny Dykes out at #Cal, expect #Wisconsin/former #USC DC Justin Wilcox to get strong consideration for the HC vacancy

In mix to replace Sonny Dykes, #Cal OC Jake Spavital>Great recruiter & led nation's No 10 O despite having to replace Goff & top 6 receivers

Heck, he even already lives there. (During this past NFL season, anyway.)

If Spivital doesn't get retained, maybe Butch waits it out? Personally, I think it's a done deal for Scott here.

If those are the candidates, the timing on this is very strange.
