Agree! What gets me is if any other team had the injuries we've had, everyone on here would be making excuses for that team or coach. Since it's the Vols many are just being unreasonable at least that's the way I see it..
They are being unreasonable for one reason only..they hate Butch Jones. They want him gone as soon as possible. To give in and admit that there were legitimate reasons for those losses is to give Butch benefit of the doubt. They will never own up to that. They are fully invested in the Butch has to go narrative, and those two losses are what they hang their hat on.
I was, and I still am, really upset that we lost to SC and especially Vandy, but since I've had time to consider it, I know we would have obliterated those two teams at full strength. The injuries are the reason...that is all. Even with the dysfunctional lockeroom we would have been at least 10-2.
Give him a little time and he fixes the issues. DB's have to get better but I'm confident in Shoop still.
Darth - good posts. Agree.
The rebuild of the coaching staff is crucial to the finish of the recruiting class this cycle as well the next. The replacement coaches have to be perceived as major improvements. Quality leaders recognize their own issues and mitigate them by making quality hires. Nothing is left sacred when reworking yourself and your org. If Butch does this, he can turn the corner and leave a great legacy on Rocky Top.
FWIW - the game plan and schemes on both sides of the ball last night were brilliant. Game balls to Debord and Shoop. I am truly happy and unhappy at the same time about the offense. Where was this scheme and play calling from Play #1 in many of the games this season? If you run that scheme and play call that way you control the ball on O for 4 quarters and keep a decimated D off the field more. Running Hurd in an offense unsuited for him when Kamara and Kelly are ready to go? Not throwing down the middle of the field when it was obvious that Dobbs throws his best when throwing down the middle of the field his entire career. No point in talking about the lack of calling designated run plays for him at times. Using a shorter rotation of quality receivers along with Wolf/Croom was posted on here a zillion times for years - and it was proven correct. If we know it, so should the staff. When you worry too much about the bad things that could happen, you miss the opportunities for the good things that could happen.
I hope Butch has observed and learned enough to take the last steps to greatness. Get real with the fans. If he does we all win.
Josh Smith is not a slot receiver, he is a WR. Put him there with Malone likely to go pro. Byrd/Abernathy to CB, Gaulden to S, TKJr. to Star and still playing some S, Evan to slot. Time to right some wrongs. Get it done.
Interesting post from Freak. All the talk about replacing Debord with Helfrich, and he just coached one of the best offenses in school history. The losses were mainly about the defense this year, and the lack of personnel.
-Complain all you want about Mike DeBord, but Tennessee scored 63 touchdowns and 473 points this year, both single-season school records. The 521 yards of offense yesterday was the second-most in a bowl game in school history. Not bad for a former administrator of Olympic sports at Michigan, as some like to harp on.

Watching this Kentucky vs Georgia Tech game right now and I'm really not looking forward to playing GT next fall. These guys cut block on almost every single play, you're basically guaranteed to lose a DL or two when you play them. Great.
