Thig is allegedly a liability in mid-state recruiting, and has not been as effective as his first year in general. Butch knows how important recruiting is at Tennessee and I think this season revealed player development deficiencies when we had to go deep into the depth chart.

Go find the full package. People like money. Open it up and let's go

If you're going to succeed you better be a good recruiter and a good coach or you better be an elite coach or and elite recruiter if you're going to be average at the other.

To be fair though, Michigan gave FSU one hell of a game. FSU obviously had more NFL talent on the field, but Michigan took it to them.

FSU dominated most of the game. It was mostly mistakes by FSU that let Michigan back in the game. Sorta like how Byrd's fumble on the kickoff let Nebraska back in the game.

For 90% of the game FSU dominated Michigan.

I agree with Penn State and Michigan but Ohio State is stacked and Wisconsin beat a full strength LSU to start the year.

That being said, your prognosis appears accurate so far.

LSU was just bad to start the season. One game doesn't make a season. And I think the Big 10 hype all season was predicated on that one game.

Ohio State is talented but they are not 2014 talent. I think this years team is good but not great. I expect Clemson to dominate them tonight. I think Ohio State is living off the luster of those super talented 2014 and 2015 teams that sent so many guys to the NFL.

This years Ohio State team is not that talented.

No. If he kicked the XP the first time, they kick an XP the second time instead of two again and the score is still the same.

Shouldn't have come to that. They shouldn't have been in need of a 2 point conversion to go up by 3 at the end. Harbaugh severely mismanaged the clock on Florida State's last possession as well. Michigan should've had over a minute with 2 timeouts remaining for their final drive.

They're as talented but younger.

Harbaugh will have Michigan near the top for as long as he's there.

Guy can coach and he's starting to get his recruits in there. Look out.

I know no one wants him to get hurt, and hopes he goes pro, but if Barnett says, "Screw it. I'm gonna put on for my home state one more time", ima be

I agree. I even questioned going for the first two and not calling a TO ITT.

Going for two, however, did not cost them the game.

He's great at NOTHING..... Good at a lot but Great at nothing.

I could see him being decent in the NFL and having A decent career because he does have great physical tools and he brings special teams value.

But from the few games I've seen of him, he just doesn't make game changing plays on defense. Like at all. He's not a liability by any means, but still.

Darth - good posts. Agree.

The rebuild of the coaching staff is crucial to the finish of the recruiting class this cycle as well the next. The replacement coaches have to be perceived as major improvements. Quality leaders recognize their own issues and mitigate them by making quality hires. Nothing is left sacred when reworking yourself and your org. If Butch does this, he can turn the corner and leave a great legacy on Rocky Top.

FWIW - the game plan and schemes on both sides of the ball last night were brilliant. Game balls to Debord and Shoop. I am truly happy and unhappy at the same time about the offense. Where was this scheme and play calling from Play #1 in many of the games this season? If you run that scheme and play call that way you control the ball on O for 4 quarters and keep a decimated D off the field more. Running Hurd in an offense unsuited for him when Kamara and Kelly are ready to go? Not throwing down the middle of the field when it was obvious that Dobbs throws his best when throwing down the middle of the field his entire career. No point in talking about the lack of calling designated run plays for him at times. Using a shorter rotation of quality receivers along with Wolf/Croom was posted on here a zillion times for years - and it was proven correct. If we know it, so should the staff. When you worry too much about the bad things that could happen, you miss the opportunities for the good things that could happen.

I hope Butch has observed and learned enough to take the last steps to greatness. Get real with the fans. If he does we all win.

Josh Smith is not a slot receiver, he is a WR. Put him there with Malone likely to go pro. Byrd/Abernathy to CB, Gaulden to S, TKJr. to Star and still playing some S, Evan to slot. Time to right some wrongs. Get it done.

Dominated is a strong word. Michigan's defense got after Francois all night.

FSU was the more talented team, without a doubt. But Michigan held their own.

I think you overlook coaching, teamwork, discipline, etc. a lot in your evaluations of CFB teams. Those intangibles are important. The team with the most talent isn't always the better team.

As disappointed as I am that we lost to South Carolina and Vanderbilt, I still got some pretty great moments out of 2016. The Battle at Bristol was an incredible spectacle. Being with my dad at Neyland to see us break the streak against the Gators is just about my favorite experience ever as a Vol fan. The Dobbnail Boot was legendary. I got to see Derek Barnett pass Reggie White, and he did it in 3 years. Josh Dobbs has been a fantastic representative of Tennessee and just so much fun to watch. And that was a solid bowl win to end the season on a high note.

Of course improvements are necessary to get the program where it belongs going forward, but all in all, it's great to be a Tennessee Vol. In the dark days I used to just wish I could have a *moment,* something -- anything at all to hang my hat on as a fan. Even with disappointments this year, I got several of those moments and I'm not going to take them for granted.

Peppers is almost as overrated as Garrett but he's still a really good player.

Not his fault the media has pumped him up like this.

I agree. Both of those guys are good players but nowhere near the hype. Whoever drafts Garrett before Barnett will regret that decision for a long time.

Happy for AK, just wished we would've utilized him more over Hurd. Think offense next year will be very good. Questions on defense.

For a season where the Volunteers failed to meet expectations, they sure did leave is with a lot of great memories in the process. The highs were really high and the lows were pretty damn low.

2016 was a hell of a ride. If Butch gets things turned around and ends up winning big here one day, this season will make for a hell of a 30 for 30 lol
