Some of y'all have straight up lost your minds. Butch is not infallible but he's done a lot to bring this program back to relevance in four years and you want him run off? Unfathomable.

One turnover away from being in ATL.

One turnover.

Screw the SCAR game. One fumble/INT back @ A&M is all we needed.

Much ado about nothing.

Big jobs opening. Butch uses his pawn errrr Hubbs to float the idea of being upset/mistreated.

Agent will get involved making the rumors of contact from these schools.

Boom! Butch gets a raise and extended. In the presser states how Tennessee is the only place he will ever coach.

Takes NFL job the next year

Lol Butch will end up coaching high school ball before an NFL team hires him as HC.

I want Butch here next year.

But he's not the shining star some of you are making him out to be. He's not going to be in demand the way some of you are making him out to be. No NFL team will go after him. The elite programs will go after much better coaches.

The biggest threat is making a lateral move if he gets a chance. And that's a big if. The schools on our level who will be looking for a new coach will mostly be looking to hire away a guy from a smaller program with a small buyout. Sure, some might look to snag a guy like Butch with a lateral move, but Butch is in the $4 million/ year club salary wise. Not many lateral moves are gonna want to start out at anything near that for a coach (that's not even considering the $4 million buyout plus the buyout they'll pay the coach they're firing this year).

Any talk about him being frustrated or making a jump is 100% an angle to get more money and/or an extension.

I think we should give him the former and tell him he earns the extension based on his performance in 2017.

You know that works the other way as well. One recovered fumble in OT, one Hail Mary...

I do not agree with the fahr Butch now crowd. I want Butch to stay and get the job done. Status quo does not do that. I have said all along it's a 6 year gig to prove it. If he learns from his mistakes, maintains his successes, and wants to make it happen at UT he will our coach for a long time because he has the ambition to be at the top. If he doesn't learn, he will probably leave on his accord, perhaps with some nudging, but generally on his own volition.

UT did not hire a finished product like Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh, etc. They hired a guy with upside that could restore winning to the program. Each year has improved. Our angst is over the time it takes as well as the obvious mistakes. To be mindless loyalists does not help things either. There has only been One ever created that earned that type of loyalty.

i have sooo

There have been maybe two. You always have a couple. If we were undefeated those couple would be complaining about how we only beat KY by 20.

Some here are indifferent, I'll give you that, but is that an acknowledgement that they want Butch gone? Even though we're 8-3, with a chance at 9-3, here's the reasons why I think some are meh about the season:

Lackadaisical performances out of the gate against teams that should have been pre-season games. Overtime to beat ASU, 4 qtr game against Ohio, slow starts against VT, and FL.

Drama in the locker room with Hurd and PW.

Recruiting (at this point) underwhelming.

Not winning the east in another down year for the east, despite being the most talented teams of Jones' tenure. "If they couldn't do it this year, will they ever?"

Lack of competiveness against Bama.

Defense at close to Sunseri levels to end the season.

Butch's seemingly pettiness bickering back and forth with the fans and media. His endless clichés are wearing thin and his disconnect with the fans seems to be widening.

Vandy being anything but a sure win. Fans are legitimately concerned about Vandy (which they should be).

Because of injuries, we've seen a lot of next year's team audition and fans don't see the next Barnett, JRM and, Cam Sutton.

Now before you roast me, I'm not saying these are legitimate or valid. I realize injuries have played a significant role. You have to have something to sell, either the present or the future. The present, while is by no means bad, is not what was expected, and the future has a lot of question marks.

I have to admit that my confidence in Butch has taken a hit. I'm not sure he's the coach to take us to the next level. I'm by no means giving up on him. I have less confidence the AD would hire anyone any better and very well could be worse.

Motivate your team that controls its own destiny at SC, and that doesn't matter. Still sucks, be we are in ATL. That's you know, his job.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as why many have lost confidence in Butch (without necessarily wanting him gone).

Some of you are ok with this years results, but the recruits are telling us it's not good enough. The shine is off.

Butch has to stop saying dumb stuff and losing games that he should win. Then he'll get respect like he wants. If not he can hit the door. Tennessee will be fine.

After losing to SCAR he should not expect a thing. He's earned nothing to talk noise about.

He's earned nothing? You say a lot of over the top, really dumb stuff (to be fair we all do sometimes) But that is just completely off the wall. Your post is a perfect example of the problem with us diehard fans.

One of the things that must be fixed. Everyone agrees classes like this one... In its current state, will not win championships

Gotta be hitting the top 10 each year to even be in the hunt

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Jones

Lyle Allen "Butch" Jones, Jr. (born January 17, 1968) is the current "Life Champion" head football coach of the University of Tennessee.

During the 2016 season, Jones led the Volunteers to a second place SEC East finish, as well as to the Championship of Life.

In addition, Jones has cornered the market on 3-Star recruits, affectionately known as, "The 3-Star General". He's worshipped by Fox Sports writer, Bruce Feldman, who annually believes Butch is the best coach in College Football and any day now, is going to win multiple National Titles.

Wow.

My problem is he seems to keep making the same mistakes year to year. Like when will he fix it?

That's BS. Last year, we got ahead early and didn't hold on. This year we get behind early and make a comeback.

If you don't like Butch, just say so. Don't make up things that just aren't true.

I like Butch and I think his work is still incomplete. He has shown that he makes changes to make the team better. Too many on here I guess think that this was a 3 year turn around job and are tired of it.

And I'm getting tired of them.

Hey Nick, does Vandy not deserve the game thread? Should we just recycle the Mizzou thread? :)

Yeah, he should win every game he coaches and have UT dynastic like Alabama! Then he would earn our respect!

Come on BB, you are pretty good at the whole football thing, but you are the worst about slighting and completely belittling anyone or anything that goes against you in the least.

Mock, I think you're a decent dude but I've seen you do the same to others, myself included.

I love the "where he'll have resources to win a natty" like he is being hamstrung by coaching here.

That's perplexing to me too. I also think a lot of people don't realize how much he's getting paid. He's the 18th highest kid coach in CFB. 9th highest in the SEC.

In the Big Ten, he'd be the 6th highest paid coach.

In the Big 12, he'd be the 3rd highest paid (2nd once Strong is fired, but Herman should make bank anyway).

In the PAC 12, he'd be the highest paid coach.

In the ACC, he'd be the 3rd highest paid coach.

The top schools in all of those conferences have their guys set (unless Jimbo bolts to LSU). What "lateral moves" that open this year are going to pay a buyout to their current coach AND a $4 million buyout for Butch AND match the money he is getting now?

S&C program is trash. IMHO

Recruiting: I think Strong evaluates talent better. That team he has is young but they are loaded.

Development: Butch acts as if he doesn't see a problem. Saban and Meyer aren't afraid to bring in top coaches to make sure their guys are developed great. Butch is scared of an opposing voice. IMO

You know that you are fluffing a coach who has done way worse compared to Butch, in a lot easier conference...you are nuts sometimes man.

I thought Butch Jones was a hack from the moment we hired him.

And he has consistently proven me wrong.

So I'm going to let his tenure play out a bit more before I say more dumb stuff about him
