Tennessee caps biggest off-season in years - expectations are high for a very good reason: the team we have hoped for since CBJ got here has arrived.

Truer words have never been spoken:

If you haven't heard rival Tennessee fans grumbling about all the publicity the Vols are getting from basically everybody who puts out way-too-early top-25 polls, you haven't been listening.

You can't type a tweet out there without hearing a derogatory comment from a Georgia, Florida, Alabama or (insert UT rival here) fan regarding how the Vols are the kings of offseason hype but fail to produce once the games start.

When Butch spoke at Freed Hardeman back in April, he said the team's motto this year was going to be "Own It".

Simple and to the point.

You have responsibilities? Own it.
You're a leader? Own it.
Expectations through the roof? Own it.

I liked the part in the article where Shoop said Butch told him when he was hired that his job is to get us from 9 wins to 11 wins in a hurry.

Semantics, but why 11 and not 12? If the Vols are capable of winning 11 with this schedule, they are capable of winning 12 IMO. Hell, the flawed 2015 Vols could and should have won 11 last year.

you're reading too much in to that. i think that statement is more about a referendum on how last year turned out.

defensive stops on any number of 4th downs against OU or FL and we're at 11 wins most likely.

i don't think you have a coach setting the ceiling on what the program should perform at.

Probably true, but he has done a good job over the years before of pumping the brakes.

.....but of course you can't write an article about the Tennessee Volunteers without mentioning the lawsuit. 🙄

If team 120 beats Florida, I honestly think they'll get past all mental blocks with that win, and bama will get a spanking also. Book it baby!

I've been wondering what it was.

I can back that.

Own it.

And......

Jump higher Vols.

I think that last year Butch was expecting a better year and surprising people. We still played better than people thought. We played toe to toe with everyone on our schedule. I mean OU and Bama were half the playoff field. Anyways the comment about Shoop shows to me why he was hired. To make that extra step into the championship level of Bama and the others. Which is encouraging. I personally believe when Butch said that even if it kills him that he will get us back to where we use to be, was not coach speak at all. He meant it and his actions prove it to me.

If Dobbs stays healthy at least through the bammer game we have a great shot at being very very good.

I think that you make a great point. Being healthy will be key for us since we still have depth issues, like for example at wide out. At that position we will have to depend on some true freshman playing a lot of snaps. But if our key guys, like Dobbs etc stay healthy we will be in Atlanta imo. We were so close last year.

Frankly, when I played high school, I never liked being "written off" in preseason. Hell, who wants to live life as a underdog all the time. I taught my kids to always want to be the one people were shooting for, you want their best game, etc.

This team can be good enough to beat anyone they play. Now, will they? Who knows but they can do it.

Good point and I believe that they believe and know that they can play with anyone, which is very important
