VT message board on our Thursday night game

Thinking 48-10. And that's being generous to them. In fact, it is likely going to be embarrassing for Va Tech. There may never be a Second Battle of Bristol, at least not as long as there is living Hokie leadership memory of this match.

They'll be ready to fire Fuente after this game. :p

I'm not saying it will be a cake walk, but Tennessee is on a whole different level when compared to VT.

I think we'll come out of the gates firing and I really think the physicality of this offense is going to surprise some people this year. Plus, our Defense is set up to be out right nasty, and I think we'll completely shut down their offense.

Without the threat of a consistent downfield passing attack, Foster's defense will focus on the run game threat and take a gamble, keying on penetrating the interior line and disrupting Dobbs.

This game will have a similar outlook to last years VT/Ohio St. game. Very close for the first half until adjustments are made or one team just begins to make too many mistakes on defense.

No because they won't score much, if at all :)

I would absolutely not be shocked if we shut them out.

Their offense is complete and total ****. And it will be at least until Fuente is there for a few seasons.

Breaking in new qb, with a bad offensive line, and not a very good running game. Our defense will smother them.

i grew up around the area up there, they definitely believe in the team......they have had some issues of late, im surprised they expect this to be easy and that we needed extra days to prepare for them.....should be fun, hope our Vols destroy um in front of the 160K+ the millions watching on the tube....

They always 'believe in the team'. Usually unwarranted, always full on arrogance.

I cannot stand Virginia Tech, and I hope we hang about 84 on them.

agreed, i mean i dont hate them, cause the only time i really thought they were any good was with M. Vick....but i totally agree beat um by 80!!!

I grew up there also, and I hope we hang a 100 on them. I'm already getting emails from friends reminding me of the Peach Bowl.

Interestingly enough... App state was top 15 in total d. And Oklahoma wasn't even in the top 5 of the teams we faced
Statistical rankings in college (nationally) mean nothing in a vacuum. Conference rankings have a lot more meaning but even those have to be balanced and contextualized.

If the same defense plays against 12 of the worst offenses and 12 of the best the stats come out totally different even thought its the same defense. Comparing stats from one conference to another is also a bad idea as different conferences have different identities. One must take in consideration the differences in level of competition and they style of play of opponents. A PAC-12 offense with really good pass defense stats is more impressive than a big 10 team with the same. Because those conferences have different identities.

I also think that people over blow how bad some teams are. Kentucky and Vandy are not nearly as bad as people think they are. They are just cursed to be in the SEC. Were they in almost any other conference they would be middle of the pack teams at worst.

App state is a dangerous team to overlook.Much like Ga southern they are known giant killers. Sleep on them at your own peril. That game should be a shellacking on paper. But the same could have been said when they played number 1 Michigan in an opener in 07. I remember that game Vegas didn't even set a line it was expected to be such a blowout. Michigan came in and played them like they were scrubs and let them hang around. result 34-32 loss to the little guy.

This is the definition of a trap game and to a lesser extent so it the VT game. We will be playing mostly vanilla both those games so as not to show too much of our hand to upcoming conference foes. I am 100% sure that won't be the case for VT and certainly not for app state. They will put all cards on the table and will come in feeling they can win it no matter how far they fall back. If we do not think we can lose to either of those teams we are in trouble.

We beat Appy St by at least 3 TD's (I suppose we could give them garbage pts in the 4th) and VT by probably 3 TD's.

I don't think we can/will lose to either of those teams, but the day what I think makes a difference in the outcome of a game.....then WE REALLY ARE IN TROUBLE.

Every team that plays Appy State gets bombarded with highlights and reports from that game. No danger of them sneaking up on any team with a coach that has film access. And "we're" not playing...so "we're" not in trouble. :)

When I say we I mean the players and coaches. I would assume one would infer that. I apologize for assuming my fellow VN posters to be able to figure that one out. It does not matter if every team that plays them sees those highlights what matters is if that lesson sticks. If our team goes in cocky we could very well be in trouble. Realistically Appy should be a blowout. VT should be a fairly easy win compared to the rest of our sched maybe slightly better than say Kentucky. The problem is how much vanilla will we still be playing at that point?

Don't know...ask Butch at the next position group meeting. :boredom:

"We're" going to beat Appy State ugly...then take the bloody snotty remains and lube up what "we're" going to perpetuate on the Hokies. Infer anything from that? :)

Tech won't score 2 TDs on on our defense.

Eggzactly. Vol fans buckle your lap belts. This D gone be NASTY! We have serious speed in the backend that can lay the wood, speed, more speed, 2 deep talent at all three levels, and some big-time d linemen.

All these people talking about Tech's nasty defense and great defensive coordinator are only thinking on reputation.

Just like their offense, Tech's defense has limited talent, and the DL is their weakest in years. Foster's defenses have been up and down in the last half decade, playing some of the weakest schedules for major schools in the country. To top it off, anyone of any count off last year's middling defense has left.

I agree that our offense should and out-talent their defense. But I do think with the combination of the game being early in the season, the environment, etc could make this a bit of a trap game for us offensively.

I think we'll win by 3 scores, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see our offense have a bit of a rut at some point during the game and for many Vol fans to be frustrated by it.
