9-1-16? (Vols' season opener moved to Thursday)

I get all that. There's no chance that the practice of announcing game times a couple weeks prior to the games is going away, but the conferences/schools/networks all need to sit down prior to releasing the schedule each year and at least hammer out an ironclad schedule so fans can have a guarantee of what days the games will be played on before they start buying tickets and booking travel accomodations.

It's all about the TV networks in these decisions (for example, the only game the SEC has that, before the season, it can push a specific matchup for and make CBS accept with no opposition/input is the day after Thanksgiving game - now Missouri-Arkansas...that's about it...and honestly, if CBS had the say rather than the SEC on that one, it's likely be a different game). The conferences and schools seem to pretty much just nod, smile, and take the money.

Well done man. :good!:

Just sucks. We live behind enemy lines in Birmingham, season ticket holders and now I've got to take them out of school for two days to see the game on a Thursday night? Can't happen. You would understand, but the legion of 19 year olds on here have no clue about life and how things work, and will argue until they're blue in the face don't have a clue.......Yet.

I'm raising my babies as VFLs, but they will miss this one. Luckily enough they won't remember.

As of right now there are no games set on ESPN 2 for that Saturday, that just adds to the poor decision making

ESPN has the rights to US Open now.

They pretty much devote ESPN2 that weekend now - the same as the first weekend of the CFB - to air coverage of that tournament the entire weekend. (And with how much money ESPN had to pay to get those U.S. Open rights away from the 46-year hold of CBS, they're not going to be bumping any of its coverage off of ESPN2 for a football game.)

CFB games didn't start airing on ESPN2 last season until the second weekend of the season.

For openers? Or for major sports teams playing in tournaments or for championships that day?

For weekday games due to logistics and security concerns surrounding game day.

And for those who would want to make this out as some sort of generational argument...I'm in my mid 30s and report to work on Friday at 6am. Spare me.

It will be sold out and it will be a glorious Thursday night in the foothills. It is amazing to see so much *****ing about this. Is your coffee too hot as well? Oh and Go Big Orange!

Pile of ridiculousness.

What in my list is not a con? For a lot of people, the cost outweighs any benefit of moving to a Thursday night game. People work Fridays. Kids go to school. It's not as easy to just alter your schedule a touch. For many people, they already put their vacation requests in for the year. Many already purchased tickets and made big trip travel plans.
Sure, the game will go on. Sure, there will be a decent turnout, but it is of zero benefit to move to Thursday. We're not even a national broadcast. Parking for a basketball game with 17000 stresses the ut parking system. Adding 80k more will crush it. If you leave at 5 from work in Knoxville, you will be hustling to make kickoff. There is a larger impact than there may be to you, a single person.
What are the pros of moving it? Name some other than it might not be quite as hot and that you can watch TV on Saturday. I'll take my tailgate on my day off any day before a Thursday night game.

I like it. The whole nation will be so hungry for football that all eyes will be on the Vols that night to start the season. I think it's brilliant actually.

Not really. The whole nation's eyes aren't likely to be on an SEC Network game between UT and a mid-major Appy state team.

The viewership numbers seem to drop a bit for the games not on ESPN for that opening Thursday (though ESPN also doesn't release SECN viewership numbers with each week's viewer numbers and ratings...possibly along a similar line of thought?)

Hart said SEC approached him after ESPN asked SEC to move another game to Thursday night.

Surely a lot of $$$ incentives here for TN and I bet we can get more recruits to the game since all of them will want to go to Auburn Clemson, Bama-USC, UGA-UNC ect on Saturday.

they play on Friday night. won't be making visits on a Thursday night unless local kids.

Butch wanted out of the Saturday mid-day heat. Game was going to kick off at noon

I live in Knoxville 5 minutes from the stadium. Great idea for us but terrible for people who travel. GO VOLS

television money doesn't change because of the move. TV revenue is a set amount split among all the conference schools. When and where you play don't matter

This is hilarious

I'm glad you think so. I'm not going to apologize for my inflated view of our program being above a Thursday night game against App. I get the positives, there are definitely some. I think I would feel differently if the game were against a Power 5 school. I just think the - for the opener are far greater than the +.

Per the SEC TV contract, schools cannot receive any additional money for moving a game to another date. There was no financial incentive here.

Ok, thank you for the clarification.

With the way the agreement goes, any idea which was likely the initiating party in moving the game (did UT come to them seeking to move the game to Thurs, the network come to UT and ask/tell them to move their game to Thurs, etc.)?

it was brought up at the conference meetings a few weeks ago. think SEC initiated

I would bet Butch loves this because it gives the Vols more time to prepare for the Battle at Bristol.

You honestly believe they'd have to open up GA seating to have a decent crowd ? Come on ...

No, I was just trying to show the absurdity of moving the starting game of a team that's already "picked" to compete for the SECCG to a Thursday. Not only does it screw up the ability for a significant number of fans to attend, it screws up all the other high school games in the area and their attendance/schedules as well.
