9-1-16? (Vols' season opener moved to Thursday)

Well, somewhere in this ridiculousness it has to have been mentioned by now that it was probably moved to Thursday to get it on t.v. Which is cool. It's a good move. Nobody gonna watch appy state other wise except vol fans.

I appreciate that, thank you. To clarify, I was referring to the logistics of the situation, not our football team.

That was my point.

Because you can't go or its inconvenient for you, you hope 102,000 other people, the University, and the city that hosts the games all have a miserable time?

Brother in law has press pass not worried about parking. Getting to call in sick at work Thursday now but will work Friday so I want get screwed out of holiday pay for Labor Day.

No kidding.

Look, I guarantee you right now the phones at the UT ticket office are ringing off the hook.

Tennessee is different than Florida too. You guys probably have fans who travel to Knoxville for games that live in about eight different states.

I know the school has the right to do this.

What I am saying (and go look at my first post) is how long can you possibly expect season ticket holders to purchase tickets and pay ridiculous booster fees (out of love of school) when they don't even know when the heck the game is going to be played.

College football is the only sport like this.

Every other sport the time and date of the game is known months in advance and does not change except for an act of God.

Yeah, but the TV networks don't seem like they'd ever want/agree to drop that right to rolling selections, allowing them to cherry-pick the games to maximize their ratings as the season actually plays itself out.

Late exit. No parking. Yea, those never occur at UT games.

My guess is a lot more people (season ticket holders) have to be at work on Friday morning vs Sunday morning. And if you think parking on a Thursday night is the same as a Saturday, you're clueless. No offense. :good!:

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm just highlighting the fact that the disclaimer is there for people to actually know that the game time and date can actually change, and when it does they were warned.

It sucks, I get it. But it's not like UT does this on a frequent basis. It's just how things go sometimes and the ticket holder should be aware that things can change.

Disclaimers like that a lot of times are more for liability purposes.

True, but at least you do know that the game will be played on a Saturday as scheduled. Apparently our AD just wants us to clear our schedule for the whole damn week and show up whenever he sees fit to schedule the game.

That or there's a financial incentive offered to the school for it to move its game to Thursday.

(Or the SEC Network just has the right in our contract with ESPN to pick up a game in the first part of the year and move it to Thurs.)

I don't think he was really wishing ill on anybody as much as just that it turns out to have enough drawbacks that the AD opens its eyes to the fact that playing midweek home games isn't the best plan for a school that has a fanbase where you've got thousands of people traveling in from across the state and even other states.

No parking for either people who paid for passes to games or people who paid for passes for school. Because you probably don't know this but they use the same lots. So, logistical problem. See how that works?

And because it's on the sec network I can't imagine that will change much

I'd say I know this campus, traffic, etc infinitely better than you.

But your posts are getting worse by the post. So demand will decrease because so many can't or won't attend, yet parking gets worse.

Please post more.

You are so right. There will literally be people that want to go to the game but will miss it because they cannot find a place to park. Not.

This sucks for me too coming from Tri Cities but I will have to use a few hours of vacation time ,because I work 12 hr shifts and get off at 7pm. The world is not over and sky is not falling. I wanted to go to bowl game but could not due to probation period but I did not cry about it like 3/4 vol fans on this thread. Deal with it we can't always have our cake and eat it. I was looking forward to tailgating , but guess I will enjoy all the big games on Labor Day weekend and be channel surfing one big game after another.

I'm sure they got some sort of kickback from the SECN, but you'd like to think he accounted for the bigger picture and the fact that his business model, as well as a large part of Knoxville's tourism economy hinges on getting these people from across the region into Knoxville for those 7 weekends each fall.

So you are saying there is not a logistical problem here, with trying to park 100k people in slots already taken by the students who paid for school spots? That is naive at the least

They'll cancel classes for that day, I'd almost guarantee it. Plenty of other schools have done it.

Lots of great posts . . . but, I still think it sucks.

Continuing to ponder this a bit further, I think the university is so focused on B@B game they forgot that the first game of the season is always something special. Sadly, they're treating the first game of the 2016 season like an off-date scrimmage.

Maybe they should refund our ticket fees and 1/7th the donation and open this up like an orange and white game. They could ensure good attendace and we'd have a lot less to complain about. Just a thought.

They would almost have to. Or at least everything after noon. People are going to be setting up tailgates on Monday for this around town. And game day will be a mess of students and fans are trying to get the same spots. But some people don't see this as an issue. Also add to the fact Thursday is our highest traffic volume for knoxville from 2pm until 7pm, and all the construction we have here and that is a headache. I'm sure the police are thrilled to hear about this.

Sure, but "drawbacks" don't happen in a vacuum. They'll hurt the fans that can make it.

At this point, as Gator pointed out, the gripe ultimately lies with a sport that's controlled by TV.

I could understand (I had to cancel a fully funded A&M trip this year thanks to a wedding) the freakout if UT was using a bunch of language about a "new tradition" or something involving this happening more often...but they aren't. Let's hope this goes well and UT uses it as a one off thing to highlight it's return to the national stage.

You honestly believe they'd have to open up GA seating to have a decent crowd ? Come on ...
