9-1-16? (Vols' season opener moved to Thursday)

Against an FCS opponent in their first year of existence no less.

Logistically, it sucks for some people. I get it.

But if you want any exposure at all for the season opener to Tennessee's most anticipated season in almost a decade...this was the only way you're going to get it given the way the week 1 schedule lays out.

The only thing I would change is trying to get ESPN to switch us to the mother ship and push the Candy/Carolina cripple fight to SECN.

That won't happen though. ESPN will almost always take the two Power 5 SEC teams playing option over one SEC team playing a mid-major...even if it's a 4-2 type score game.

I'd say I know this campus, traffic, etc infinitely better than you.

But your posts are getting worse by the post. So demand will decrease because so many can't or won't attend, yet parking gets worse.

Please post more.

Oh noes. A football game on a Thursday. How will this ever happen???????

Before you know it, we'll be putting people on the moon.

Sure, but "drawbacks" don't happen in a vacuum. They'll hurt the fans that can make it.

At this point, as Gator pointed out, the gripe ultimately lies with a sport that's controlled by TV.

I could understand if UT was using a bunch of language about a "new tradition" or something involving this happening more often...but they aren't. Let's hope this goes well UT uses it as a one off thing to highlight it's return to the national stage.

I get all that. There's no chance that the practice of announcing game times a couple weeks prior to the games is going away, but the conferences/schools/networks all need to sit down prior to releasing the schedule each year and at least hammer out an ironclad schedule so fans can have a guarantee of what days the games will be played on before they start buying tickets and booking travel accomodations.

Hope UT will refund my tickts, can't make it down now, gotta work.. Ughhhh.. And so here comes my blue hair, we are not in the MAC, The AAC, or the ACC, we're Tennessee, we don't play on thursdays

Good luck with the refund. They'll probably say you're on your own and you'll just need to make back however much you can selling them online, though.

Cons:
1. No tailgating.
2. Rushing to campus right after work.
3. No parking (school is in session. Including night classes. Parking hell)
4. Late exit from the game. Late to bed. Crappy next day at work.
5. It's a holiday weekend. Taking a 4 1/2 day weekend isn't an option.
6. If you don't live in Knoxville, the above point really screws you.
7. Tailgate Tennessee. If you bought this, you are now screwed. If you provide catering to these groups, you are now screwed. If you provide other services to Tailgate TN / tailgating, in general, you are now screwed.
8. Hotels now have cancellations to deal with.
9. This is now a give-away ticket for many people, so get ready for Cousin Rick and his clan to come on down to Neyland, not pay attention to the game, and leave at half-time.

Tennessee screwed up here. They put out a schedule, allowed people to make plans, then created a logistical hot mess, even this far in advance. They can talk about how "exciting" this is, but it's really not.

Pro:
Tons of tickets on the street, so mine will be a nice seat for cheap.

True - A major screw up by the AD - would be hilarious if there is a long weather delay

I'd agree with that. Changing it this late is not ideal at all.

I would hope UT, hotels, etc would be a little more understanding with this change after a date was originally set but I won't hold my breath.

Brother in law has press pass not worried about parking. Getting to call in sick at work Thursday now but will work Friday so I want get screwed out of holiday pay for Labor Day.

Im sure your boss will know why you are calling off work

Getting a hotel room for Thursday night rather than Friday or Saturday was about $50 cheaper. Guess the Knoxville hotels may have not noted the game date change in their systems yet. One benefit of being retired is the date change won't make a big difference for me. Much better that noon time this early in the season.

2 that afternoon so still a little time to sleep.

As someone who works weekends my biggest gripe has been when the schedule gets released. Each year the schedule seems to come out later and later; and I'm left picking random weekends in the fall and hoping it's for the Florida/Bama game and not a bye week.

They announced this year's SEC schedule October of last year. Is that late?

Don't know about hotels or airlines, but I'm confident there's zero chance anyone gets a refund from UT for their tickets.

No, someone thought it through and made the right decision.

Don't know if it was the right decision or not, but the school probably got paid by ESPN to move their game date...so at least on the athletic department's end it was the right decision.

The sky is blue!!!!

Some of you will argue for the sake of arguing. I'm pretty sure my wife has 79 aliases on Volnation just so she can argue with someone.

Brutal.

I like it. The whole nation will be so hungry for football that all eyes will be on the Vols that night to start the season. I think it's brilliant actually.

If you have a wife who has enough time to log on to Volnation as 79 different posters, you suck as a husband.

An anorexic might be hungry enough for TN vs App State. But nobody else will give a damn.
