Not saying the defense was good; it was not, but other factors also contributed to this loss: two missed field goals and coaching miscues, and yes, offensive inability to gain first downs when needed.

Trying to run out the clock, Josh Dobbs ran a keeper on a third-and-6 play that was stuffed for a loss and helped Florida get the ball back with a little more than 2 minutes to play.

You can put it on the defense, but this was a team (and Coaching loss).

Can't disagree. All I am saying is that a decent defense (or defensive play calling) doesn't let that happen. Championship defenses make plays to win games, like Bama did to us. They just needed one fourth down stop in 5 tries. 20% would have won that game.

Florida game was all on the defense. Effort wise a curl route should never go for 67 yards on 4th and 18.

Plus our offense put Medley in position to put more points on the board than he did in all of our losses.

I'll give him a pass on the UF game because that was a long one in a high pressure setting, but he missed one against Arky which would have changed the dynamic of our last offensive drive, three against Bama that would have been enough for us to get the win, and one against Oklahoma that would have put the game out of reach for them most likely.

Not to mention the fact that Dobbs threw a dime to Ellis that should have been a TD in the 2nd half of the OU game and he dropped it.

There were multiple factors between our offense, defense, and special teams that led to most of our losses. Just pinning it on conservative playcalling shows selective memory IMO.

That was the edited version of my original post. The original used words like piss ant, ignoramus, and some Marine Corps terms involving mothers, body parts and happy endings that I was pretty sure would get me put on vacation.

I chose to be nice instead.

You didn't think I was being nice?

Well? I'm waiting for an answer maggot. :)

OU was on defense too although I do understand why they broke down a bit. That said, any time an offense goes up by that much defense should be able to hold on. We couldn't early in the season but post-UGA (and in some spots before then the defense starting playing very well).

At Bama, the defense was lights out and kept us in it. They also saved the day against SC.

To be fair, nobody has to be asked for their opinion. It's a forum, people give opinions and people usually give theirs back. That's the point.

But I do like what you say about Kelly, we will have to see what comes. I do think Kelly is an underrated back, and the comment about the OL being better after this year, seems like they should be a heck of a group after this year, JJ being junior and the others, Richmond's second year playing college ball, should be one of the best in the nation if everyone develops/healthy.
I liked what I saw with Kelly when he got his chance to run. Production being siniliar? Very well could be, possibly Kelly having more carries, Hurd breaks a lot of tackles, Kelly seems like he could rip off a long one at anytime. Realistically they could have similar yards in a year. It's not far fetched by any means.

What are you smoking these days?

Hurd is absolutely one of the all time top 5 RB's at UT and Kamara has proven to be pretty good also. They were both 5* recruits out of HS. Kelly was a 3*. There is a huge difference between Hurd / Kamara vs Kelly.

I love Hurd, but he's not one of the 5 best RB's ever at UT. He has the chance to be, but he ain't right now.

And I agree with the original points about Kelly. He looks like a really good back.

He was responding to "we all want to win NATTYS".

Thank you. :hi:

And FWIW, I'm not a millennial but that's hardly a millennial phrase. It's pretty common internet slang. People are more likely to use slang online but even if it's said IRL it's no denigration.

Somewhere, in vast distance between myself, and infinity, I hear a faint, rustling sound.

I cry out, "Jimmies?"

And the gentle response, "yes, it is we."

Against South Carolina our defense allowed an inept QB and offense to march up and down the field.

2nd. If I gave a damn about your opinion, I would have sought you out and asked for it. As it is, I don't and I didn't. It was a conversation between me and who I assume is an OSU fan, or at least someone who closely follows OSU football.

Wow - whatever it is is making you angry and forgetful also. Remember the whole premis of an open forum like VN is open discussion between all who care to join in. If you want a private discussion with another poster you might try a PM or email? Either way, no need to get so riled because someone disagrees with your opinion - it's just football, not religion or politics.

Fair enough. If he's not top 5 will you concede top 10?

As for Kelly, is it fair to say "he has the chance to be" a really good back as he's not taken any meaningful snaps yet at UT?

I like Kelly and hope he continues to develop, but IMO, JMO, TIFWIW, saying he is of comparable talent to Hurd is premature.

I think that blame for those losses could go toward both the offense and defense. Both units could have ended both the OU and Florida games. In the beginning of the year the whole team displayed a lack of killer instinct on both sides of the ball. The defense seemed to struggle in key situations without the on field leadership from Maggitt (missing Gaulden too). The offense was too one dimensional when we really needed a first down. I think that the talent was there, but we just couldn't get it all together at the same time. I am optimistic that this year with more receiver depth and more experienced leadership on defense, we should be able to give anyone fits.

I just watched the end of the UF game.

Man that was painful.

We had about 3 ways to ice that game both on offense and defense.

And that second kick was a foot from being good.

So, Kelly is now going to be equal to or greater than Hurd and that he may not be a top 5 in UT history? Is that what I read? Wow.

Hurd started behind a bottom 3 O-line as a freshman and a middle of the road O-line as a Soph. He had a severe shoulder injury his senior season in HS he had to get over as well. And here he is about to have the most rushing yards in program history and there will be no big drop off? Of course there will. Not just as a runner, Hurd can flatten a blitzing LB or D-back in a nano-second. If he stays in to block they tend to stay away. He catches the ball well out of the backfield. His presence in the backfield draws another guy into the box that is not needed with guys like Kamara and Kelly. They do more work outside the box, although I concede Kelly may have more success inside than Kamara.

Hurd is in the top 3 as an RB at UT if he does as well as he did last season. He could end up the best. JMO FWIW.
