Florida game confidence

This is definitely the game that is in our teams head, especially since we've had them beat the last two years, and wet the bed. That being said what do you thing the odds are that we end the 11 game losing streak to the gators? We will more than likely be favorites and the game is in Knoxville.
If they win this year they will be the first team to ever beat us 12 years in a row. They currently tie Bama from 71 -81 when Bear was HC.

Let that sink in

If we loose again this year Florida will own the biggest win streak against---*77----------- TN ever and I will honestly won't even consider it a rivalry anymore. It will be a rivalry the same way we consider Candy or Canturkey a rival.

Florida owns us until we prove otherwise. If the streak doesn't end this year I honestly don't see when it will in the next decade.

Florida game is already, and has long been, a one-sided "rivalry" IMO. Florida is our most important rival and we desperately want to beat them once, just once, for the first time since 2004. All while Florida knows they can just show up and either take the game, or be given the game to win by Tennessee. It doesn't matter who's injured, who the QB is or how awful he plays or who the headcoach is...they know for a fact they're gonna win, and that's a powerful thing. There's zero chance they see us as a rival....much in the way we don't, and shouldn't see Vandy as a rival.

A Tribute to the 2016 Florida Game: Runnin' on McElwain (with apologies to Jackson Browne)

Looking out at the field rushing under my feet
Looking back at the yards gone by like so many summer fields
At the forty-five I needed seventeen, and running up one-on-one
I don't know where I'm running next, I'm just running on

Running on, running on McElwain
Running on, blinding fast
Running on, running into the sun
We gonna kick they behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your team alive
Trying not to confuse all the hype with what you do to survive
At the thirty-nine we gained twenty-one and we called the game our own
I don't know where that game turned into the game we're now in

[chorus]

Everyone we know, everywhere we go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If we can get KB to smile before we leave

Looking down at the field rushing under our feet
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this game feels
I look around for the teammates I turn to to pull me through
Looking into their smiles I see them running too

[chorus]

Actually, it could be argued that you can...over the years lots of games have been lost on the last play of the game, with the 2015 Michigan loss to Michigan State on a botched punt coming to mind as an example.

Or you pick up the first down and a punt is not necessary. Feels kinda dumb to blame one play when there are 150+ in a game. Execute one of those and the outcome is different

Yet, that was the one singular, routine, improbable play that turned the game away from a Michigan lead to a Michigan State win. All the other plays of the game to that point, collectively, had Michigan with the lead and in a great, nearly 100% position to win the game.....until that one play happened.

So that one play was influenced by dozens more. If you blame one play or call then you negate the rest of the game's impact. That's ridiculous

People that have coached or played at high levels understand one play does not win or lose games. Grandstand fans have that understanding often, but the totality of every play in the game is really how games are won or lost. Using the example, had Michigan's offense had better execution they would not have been forced into a punt which lost them the game. I suspect Harbaugh and his staff will be going over and over the film for their team showing lack of execution, mistakes, and or lack of effort the last couple of offensive series which put them in the losing position rather than laying the loss on one play and player.

No, I just said that all the collective plays of the game to that specific point in time had Michigan with the lead, with a probability to win the game likely in the 99% range. And without the occurrence of that ridiculously remarkable and inexplicable play, Michigan would've won.

For example, if there had been a substitution penalty or something that required a 10 second runoff, the game would've been over and Michigan would've won the game because of all the work they had done up until that point of the game.

So, you can keep saying everything is ridiculous and dumb, but it doesn't change the fact that if that one, singular play doesn't happen how it happened, Michigan would've won that game.

We all know that perhaps Michigan could've done things differently earlier in the game that could have changed the outcome of the game UNTIL THAT POINT OF THE GAME. Sure, maybe if they'd gotten a few more first downs or scored another touchdown in the 1st quarter, maybe that changes things, who knows? It's all speculation.

However, in realistic terms, what we know actually did happen, as a matter of fact, is that prior to that last play, which was arguably one of the most improbable plays in the history of college football and all of sports in general, is that after 59:50 of a 60 minutes game, after 124 of the 125 plays run in the game.....after the collective results of all those plays, Michigan had a 23-21 lead and only a miraculous singular play....the one that actually happened....changed the outcome of that game from a certain Michigan win to an improbable Michigan State win.

So, while I understand the subjective, nebulous nature of the "should've and could've done something different earlier in the game before that last play" argument, the
actual, objective fact is that that one play did indeed cost Michigan the game.

I would agree that "generally" games are not lost on one play, especially a play during the game where there is still time for additional plays to be made by either team. I will also agree that one play could not be identified as being strictly responsible for UT's close losses last year.

However, to speak in absolutes and hold on to the notion that a single play cannot ever be identified as the reason for a team's loss ignores the REALITY of last year's Michigan game, or the countless completed "last play of the game" Hail Mary passes that are documented throughout college football's history.

The reality is that a game is a collection of plays. Some might have a greater impact but none can exist by themselves. For the Michigan example, their inability to execute a play to pick up a first down forced them to punt. Why not blame that failure instead of the next one? For the hail mary, does it not usually take a series of plays to get in position to throw the ball to the end zone? One of those fails and the game is over before the throw even happens. Blaming one play is simple but incorrect

Why not blame the play that didn't yield the first down for Michigan before the punt? Honestly, because even with that play counted into the totality of results and outcomes of the game to that point, Michigan still had the lead and was going to win the game...........until the last dreadful, inexplicable play of the game happened, which changed the course, the results and the eventual outcome of the game in its totality.

Yes, a game is a collection of plays...that is absolutely correct. All of the prior plays have placed you in the situation that you are facing on that last play, and they may influence the type of play that you choose to run on that last play, but the last play stands on its own. It starts on its own, it end on its own...and it can change the results of a game, all on its own.

The indisputable reality is that the FINAL play of a game can, and often has, changed the outcome of the game. You can twist words anyways you want, but in the end, the results of a singular play, the last play of the game, can change the scoreboard and the resultant winner and loser of the game. The statement that a single play cannot determine the outcome of a game is simply not true and the examples of this are numerous.

This is an interesting debate with good points made on both sides. Fans tend to let 1 play stick out that swayed the outcome of the game.

Last night I was watching Catching Hell about the "Steve Bartman" incident. I know several people in Chicago...to this day blame that loss on him. That's crazy! 10 people were reaching for the ball and none of them were looking at Moises Alou. There was a whole comedy of errors that happened during that half inning. But fans need an enemy.

Look back at the '00 UF game and "The Catch". That play didn't lose the game for the Vols. The game was lost leading up to that moment...even though UF could have kicked a FG and sent it overtime had it not been ruled a catch.

UT could have picked up the 1st down on the previous drive. Game over.

UT could have stopped UF after Leaverton pinned them deep after the punt when Henry didn't pick up the 1st down.

But it's easy to blame the refs which is somewhat understandable in a last minute scenario.

Urban won a BCS game at Utah after going undefeated. 2 things Butch has yet to do at any level. If Butch wants to keep making $4+ million a year then he needs to start beating our rivals and winning big games. UGA was a nice start but after 3 years he is 1-8 against them. Also he is 0-3 against OOC P5 teams in the regular season. Maybe don't kick a field goal on 4th and an inch when you have Hurd.

not that it tips the scales one way or the other, but i think people forget how big the USCe game was in 2013. that was an 11 win, top 5 team we beat.

beating UGA last year, but in reality, again, going back to 2013 UGA game....that was as close to feeling like a win, after a loss, that i've ever experienced.

you balance that out with the last two FL games, and i think Butch is probably right on track, if not a tad ahead, given the bowl record and recruiting.

this year's important. i think 10-2 or better.

gotta. beat. Florida.

that was still a terrible call.

that said, i agree, i figured we lost the game after we kicked our 3rd or 4th FG inside the 35. we settled for FG's way too much in that game. totally dominated between the 20's. that game sucked out loud.

Until we beat them I'm not confident we can. I have to be shown we can beat them on the field. No reason we should have lost the last two games.
