DC Candidates?

As much as I'd loves to have shoop here, he's not coming. The only reason he has t dismissed this yet is because he wants penn state to raise his salary, in order to keep him there. It would make absolutely no sense for him to come here. He grew up in PA, his son is on the team, and he is good friends with Franklin.

I would say short list is probably:

Shoop
Chizik
Venables
Chavis

Why does a lot on here keep saying Chavis. Do not want him back. You didn't like it when our defense gave up some 3rd and 4th down playes this year. Why even bring up Chavis to come back. You getting same thing.

Wonder if CBJ is goin for a young position coach from the NFL; has collegiate experience and is ready for DC?! Who could that be? And wouldn't that sway, Sutton and JRM to stay AND get those 5 stars to commit!

Except for the state he grew up in and the name of the HC, you could be talking about Jancek.

I've seen his defense do it more than Jancek's. I agree with you.

Here's what 247 said about Shoop

BOB SHOOP
Defensive coordinator, safeties coach, Penn State
Shoop is likely the most expensive name on this list, considering he reportedly makes approximately $1 million per year at Penn State, but he’s well worth the price. Shoop, who went with boss James Franklin from Vanderbilt to Penn State, is widely regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators at any level of football, and what he does from a schematic perspective wouldn’t seem to be a problem for Tennessee. We’ve heard a few rumblings that Shoop and his family wouldn’t mind moving back to the state of Tennessee, and if things worked out to make this kind of statement hire, few people would likely complain. Many times the most expensive move is the closest thing to a sure-thing move, and that’s the case here, in our opinion. No hire is too big too fail, but this would widely be seen as a big-time statement hire. When you look at the defenses Shoop has built at places like William & Mary, Vanderbilt and Penn State under challenging circumstances and extrapolate that into what he could do at a place like Tennessee, you realize why LSU and others have tried to hard to hire him in recent years. And we’ve heard his name mentioned in connection with Tennessee for several weeks now. And we’ve heard that interest certainly is mutual.

Thanks very much for bringing this to the board!

He's not going to hire a first-time defensive coordinator.

I know it said it was mutual, but I think butch didn't want to fire him and kind of just let him know he wanted to bring somebody else in, just because they're good friends.

I'm not saying I want Chavis. Just saying who I think we put feelers out too. I'd add Orlando, Wilcox and maybe Shannon to the list as well.

How do we define "under the radar "?

Internal?
Position coach promotion from outside?

I like the idea of Hobby and Dake Jones. Homer in me I guess.

But I guess we'll just have to wait and see

That was the worst defense I have ever seen at Tennessee and I have been watching Tennessee football since 1946.

Can I just stop and recognize the fact that we have an octogenarian not only contributing to the message board but slamming Sunseri as well? I love it here

Dale Jones is a 3-4 guy

He's been on the way to Knoxville for quite some time.
Spooky thing about that is....if Dooley had hired him rather than Sal Sunseri, He'd probably still be the HC, here. Chew on that for a while.
