DC Candidates?

Boston College, San Diego State, Appalachian State, and Marshall were among the 15 best scoring defenses in the nation this season. Each of their DCs might be worth looking more closely at.

But can cross two of them off consideration, right off the bat. Don Brown, the DC at Boston College, just got hired up by Michigan. So he's off the table. San Diego State's head coach is actually his own DC. So that leaves:

Nate Woody -- 3rd year DC at App. St., age 54, alma mater Wofford. 13th best scoring defense in the country in 2015, allowing 18.3 ppg. Team went 11-2 and beat Ohio in their first-ever FBS bowl game.

Chuck Heater -- 3rd year DC at Marshall, age 63, alma mater Michigan. 14th best scoring defense in 2015, at 18.4 ppg allowed. Marshall went 10-3 and beat U Conn in the St Petersburg Bowl.

Anyone heard anything good, bad or indifferent about either of these guys?

p.s. For comparison purposes with another name being mentioned:

Todd Orlando -- 1st year DC at Houston, (9 total years as a DC, previously at U Conn and FIU), age mid-40s, alma mater Wisconsin. 19th best scoring defense (tied with Michigan State), at 20.5 pts/game allowed. Houston went 13-1, beat Florida State in the Peach Bowl.

Will Willie Martinez be in the conversation, he probably should be, don't you think?

Shoop getting all the run....

anyone else worth talking about?

Shoop? Are you kidding me? He is not worth talking about...good grief. A Yale, Columbia and Vandy guy, all football powerhouses? Whose only claim to very, very minor fame is being James Franklin's guy?

This HAS to be a joke, right? :loco:

Probably the best DC right now is the guy at Clemson...and that would be a huge long shot.

People talk down about Chief, but his defenses were primarily responsible for two different schools (with suspect offenses) getting into the national championship game.

Even during the two losing seasons that cost CFP his job, Tennessee's defense was tough. The problem for the Vols during Chavis final years on staff were offenses that couldn't turn 4 first half interceptions at UCLA into rout, that couldn't score more that 13 points on Northern Illinois or score more than 7 against Wyoming.

Jancek did a fine job... hate to see him go... but John Chavis coming home right now would be an upgrade. (AND... just plain RIGHT.) :)

Here's what 247 said about Shoop

BOB SHOOP
Defensive coordinator, safeties coach, Penn State
Shoop is likely the most expensive name on this list, considering he reportedly makes approximately $1 million per year at Penn State, but he’s well worth the price. Shoop, who went with boss James Franklin from Vanderbilt to Penn State, is widely regarded as one of the best defensive coordinators at any level of football, and what he does from a schematic perspective wouldn’t seem to be a problem for Tennessee. We’ve heard a few rumblings that Shoop and his family wouldn’t mind moving back to the state of Tennessee, and if things worked out to make this kind of statement hire, few people would likely complain. Many times the most expensive move is the closest thing to a sure-thing move, and that’s the case here, in our opinion. No hire is too big too fail, but this would widely be seen as a big-time statement hire. When you look at the defenses Shoop has built at places like William & Mary, Vanderbilt and Penn State under challenging circumstances and extrapolate that into what he could do at a place like Tennessee, you realize why LSU and others have tried to hard to hire him in recent years. And we’ve heard his name mentioned in connection with Tennessee for several weeks now. And we’ve heard that interest certainly is mutual.

I like Marion Hobby . I don't see Shoop as an upgrade at all . This is a big hire at a very important time period as everyone has pointed out. Hire the right guy and win the east next year. Hire the wrong guy and we will be talking about a chance to go to a bowl again. You win in the SEC with defense.

You don't see Shoop as an upgrade? Why?

i think we should call brown, warrior and hardman and ask them who they want as DC and go with that. for real though we need a DC that can recruit his butt off and lock up these big name guys. critical hire right here this close to national signing day for a pivotal class.

Beautiful. Kill 2 birds with one stone...1. Significantly upgrade our defense 2. Put the final nail in Franklin's coffin by taking away the one reason he's ever had success as a headcoach...Bob Shoop.

I especially liked the last sentence that Wes typed.

You know I watched them play Michigan and I was surprised at how terrible their offense was. Their game plan was terrible. They would throw deep almost every other play. I think Franklin is in over his head.

Yes. He coached good defenses at Yale, Columbia and Vanderbilt. I don't care if he coached at Florida Clown college..... If he is good and interested, talk to him. Get over this he is a X guy or a Y guy. I'd take him over any of the mentioned options right now.... The guy succeeds wherever he has been and that's all that matter..... Not the color shoes and shirt he wore on game day the last few years. Good grief....
