Signature Win - Over UGA?

I think it's pretty obvious UGA is way overrated, but still, it's Jones' best win by far. Not his fault all the pundits missed on Georgia.

Like I said there's a difference at least to me between coach worshipping and being a fan of a team.

Just because I don't like their coach and haven't since day one doesn't change that fact. I was a fan way before he got here and will be a fan long after he's gone.

And as far as the "told you so" thing it's darned if you do, darned if you don't. If I would have posted this after a loss it would be gloating. If I post this like I did after a win it's making excuses. Just because I don't agree with who the coach is in Knoxville at least to me does not make me a non-fan. To those who like him that's fine. Everyone should be entitled to their own opinions.
there's no way you post this thread "yeah, we beat UGA but they're not that good" and not know you're going to get the agenda label.

you might as well just finish this sentence off like this:
I don't like their coach and i hope he fails so he gets fired

in essence that's what you're doing here. w/out coming out and saying it. diminish the win, lower the value of Bama some how, and push the "i don't like butch, see told ya" agenda.

there's no getting around that, and that has nothing to do with how good or bad a fan you are, it just is what it is.

Hey man I knew this topic would be a heater the second I threw it out there. I won't backtrack from my statements. I guess the glaring thing about this whole situation is I know there are many others who feel similarly to me and we are all labeled as non-fans. And I just don't understand how not being a fan of a coach is not being a fan of the program.

I guess there are some things that I just won't understand. But you are definitely entitled to your opinion. I opened this can of worms I may as well crawl around in the dirt with them.

i don't care about fan/non fan. that's not my call.

what i don't understand is if you do follow this program as closely as you apparently do, how on Earth you can not look at this win as a signature win?

0-5 against UGA
1 win against a top 25 team in the last, what, 5 years?
ofer against our rivals since 2009.
3 bad, heartbreaking losses this year.
coming back down 3 TD's

so, as we talk about what is understandable or not, at this point it simply DOESN"T MATTER how good or bad you perceive GA to be.

many would perceive a 2-4 TN team that hasn't proven to be able to win anything, much less an top 25 SEC game against one of it's top 3 rivals to not have any business being on the field with GA.

you add all that up, and yeah....it is a signature win.

tell you what...pretend we lost that game. then tell me what your narrative would be today? if you're honest on that answer, then you'll know whether or not you're pushing an agenda or just being an objective fan that loves all things TN, except Butch Jones.

It was a big win because we got over the hump and did what we were unable to do the last three weeks, win in the second half over a ranked team that, despite their shortcomings, still is considered to have more depth than we do.

It's a major step in the right direction for a talented young team that had to grow up a year ahead of schedule because of the preseason hype put on them.

Fwiw

My confidence in this coaching staff out of 10 went from like a 2 to a 5 after the UGA game

So far, to me this season has been two steps backwards and one step forward

Another unpopular opinion around here I imagine is this. I think the Georgia game raises as many questions about the staff as it presents answers

We should be favored in the rest of our games except one. I would like to continue to see progress, such as starting the right players, utilizing the ones you have properly (Dobbs) and and not going into turtle mode when we have the lead.

Just beat UK, Mizzou and USCe, win a bowl game...and everyone is back on board. I promise

If we lost the game I would have said, honestly, that I expected them to lose the game. At the beginning of this season I posted a topic on here of game by game predictions. They are exactly where I had them at this point in the season. I had them losing to Arkansas and Georgia but beating Florida. We lost to Florida but beat UGA.

For the rest of the season initially I had them getting edged by Alabama 34-27 dropping to 3-4. Then beating Kentucky 48-24, South Carolina 37-31, and North Texas 58-14 going to 6-4. I had a loss to Missouri 28-24 and a win over Vandy 42-27 to finish at 7-5.

After seeing how the year is playing out I very well could see them beating Missouri and finishing 8-4. I've been more taken back by the way we've lost the previous games against Oklahoma and Florida than anything else.

If Butch can stick some of those cliches in his own back pocket and come out and finish more games, step on people's throats when we have someone down, and not look like the laughing stock of College Football I will be more willing to at least give him a chance. I promise you I'd MUCH rather be wrong about him and having us competing for SEC Title games than having him fall on his face just so I could say I told you so. The hell with that - but I still want to see more out of him as a coach. And I've definitely soured even more on him in this past offseason when he could have went after a good OC and instead traded favors with DeBord and brought him in.

If Alabama completely runs us off the field in 2 weeks I don't see that as progress. If we hang close and don't blow a double digit lead then at least it would appear to me that the team is not laying down and playing hard. Even if Bama gets trucked by A&M next week beating them would be a signature win just because it's Bama. I'm still more old school in thinking Bama has and always will be the biggest game we have on the slate. You won't see me on here saying "told you so" if Bama kicks our teeth in though. I expect them to lose this game.

What I don't expect now that I've saw the season unfold is for us to have any right to lose games to Kentucky, the Cocks, Mizzou, or Vandy. Is that fair?

being critical of the coach is fine with me. i've been critical. they've earned criticism. there's some you can certainly make from the UGA game. i'm not going to lie, when we punted at the end of the game on 4th and half yard, i almost came unglued. we're going to put our defense on the field again to seal a win? really?!?! that hadn't exactly worked out too well previously. i thought for sure we'd go for it. 3 runs, and a punt. just like the FL game.

the difference....the punt execution was freakin' perfect. 99.5 yards from a tie.

but i can't imagine that at the time that decision was made, there weren't a bunch of us shaking our heads thinking "oh no not again!!".

the difference in this game was the players. more times than not, they made plays. Punter. Safety. WR's. QB. O linemen.

the trick for this team is taking advantage....don't drop interceptions. don't drop catchable balls. don't fumble. don't miss blocks. we were on the plus side of that Saturday and that's why we won.

I guess it depends on your definition of "signature" is. Are you looking at ranking, ending a streak, a key rival? From a ranking standpoint, no it isn't. But I would say this was a signature win because of the streak UGA had over us. Same with UF, Bama, etc.

Wow.
Just wow.

The fact that you would even try to discountil this win tells me all I need to know about you.

Go crawl back under your rock where you belong..no one likes you or wants your cancerous words around our team.

yes that's fair. i had 8-4 as well. and the only game we've lost that i thought we'd win is the FL game.

i still don't understand given our state of affairs the past 1/2 decade you can't call winning saturday a big deal. it was. we needed it, and butch needed it. and until you can come up with a legitimate reason why it's not a signature win, then it has to be only because it's good for Butch, and that's bad for you.

context matters. context of the game, the season, the history. and there's no context you can come up with that doesn't define this as a signature win.

It's Butch's FIRST real win. I will absolutely give him that one.

no. like it or not, USC 13 (1st win over a ranked team) and 14 (with the way we came back on the road) actually do count. and the throttling of Iowa counts too.

none of those games are going to get you in the top 10 or winning the SEC. but w/out those wins there literally is nothing else to hang your hat on. the next step was beating a GA, FL and/or Bama.

we do, and now the narrative is "so now he's 1-7 against them, so big whoop".

it has to start somewhere.

Signature win for me is a win over a top ten opponent. But This was a great win for the coaching staff and the players. I think it gives them a lot of confidence going in to Tuscaloosa. We might be talking about a real signature win in a couple of weeks.

Bump because if nothing else this beatdown by Florida should at least prove my point that I was trying to make after how everyone went batcrap crazy after the UGA win. They aren't a good team.

At no point in the last 20 years has a win over Alabama, Florida or Georgia not been a big deal. And beating Georgia is probably the single biggest win for recruiting that there is.

Living here I will take a year of not hearing the smack from the leg humper fans. My kids are ecstatic as well. The Georgia win is less impressive looking at how they have played since.
