Recruiting Forum Football Talk XVII

I had a very interesting conversation today with my brother in law who is a Michigan fan and alum. He lives in Arizona now and we only talk a handful of times a year but had to call him today in regards to a family matter. We started talking our usual small talk about football. I asked him what he knew about Mike DeBord, I told him Tennessee was looking at him in regards to OC. I made the statement that I didn’t see how the style of play was a good fit for CBJ. He went on to say it would actually be a good fit, I asked how do you figure? He went on to tell me Lloyd Carr dictated what type of offensive scheme to run, and DeBord was simply following along.

Here is where our conversation got interesting, he said in the month leading up to the Capital One Bowl against Florida, DeBord approached Lloyd Carr explaining their current offense wasn’t a good matchup against Florida and recommended they open it up as he knew how to attack Florida in space. Reluctantly Carr agreed, they spent a month of practice working on the spread getting ready for the game. My brother in law keeps up with and watches Tennessee football also because my sister is a Tennessee alum. He said, when you have time go watch the Capital One Bowl, it’s the same offense Butch runs.

That day Michigan won, and put 41 points up against Florida and had their D tripping over themselves. Now I’m not saying this is proof he is the “man” but after watching this I can certainly see why Butch is talking to him. After that game Lloyd Carr retired, Rich Rod was hired and DeBord took a position as O Line coach with Seattle.

It's good to know.

Nothing has changed to suggest any candidate has emerged to overtake clubhouse leader Mike DeBord, who also is apparently mulling an offer that could include an assistant head coach title with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

This sounds so much like Hubbs greasing the skids for this guy.

Wait so mean there is more depth to his than what pops up when I type Debord's name into a google search? I am going to have to take time to process that. I was pretty sure what I read on my google search would definitely put me in position to determine which coach would be most successful at the ultimate goal in this situation....helping out offense put up the most points!

The problem with that statement is that Kamara, Smith, and a healthy North changes things. When CMB had one of those games where we were throwing alot of those flares and short passes, I stated that Kamara could be a gamechanger because he could take that to the house, something that we didn't have. People didn't want to hear it and still complained.

I am not going to sit here and say that CMB called good games all of the time, but a better OL and adding Kamara and Josh Smith will help whoever is the OC.

This word right here is the kicker. No, I am not saying Kamara sucks by any means. Anybody with any amount of knowledge would be able to tell you he is very athletic and gifted at football and will be dynamic. What I am talking about are people saying CMB would be good next year because of the pieces coming back from injury, OL hopefully getting better, etc. that he didn't have this year. That I do not believe. Would he be better? I would hope so. But his play calling from the past 2 years has not been good, he fails to get any of the playmakers we still had on offense in space, seemed to forget about plays that previously showed success, etc. That shows me he is not an good OC.

Here's how I see things. Most fans were upset with how slow this offense full of young talent was developing under Bajakian. We think it's just the adjustments to SEC play and using freshmen. Some start to notice that Auburn's offense under Malzahn is already one of the best in the league. Forget the fact that Malzahn is THE offensive guru in college football right now, and hold a roster with a seasoned offensive line and a RB that was a few votes from winning the Heisman. Since we don't show immediate impact and have little to no big plays, we start to look for someone to blame. It's just the volunteer way. The most obvious Salem witch is the offensive coordinator. Despite calling great games against Georgia and South Carolina games with a completely new Oline, RB, TE and losing A LOT of WR depth to injury, the overwhelming understand amongst Vols fans is this: "our defense is miles ahead of where we were a few years ago, it's gotta be the offensive playcalling that is keeping us from greatness". From the Oregon game to the South Carolina game, I read at least one poster a week say some form of "fahr BuhJakeean". So what's an OC to do when almost an entire fan base is calling for his ass? Find a new job before getting the axe. The pressure was on for him and he knew it. And even though most of you won't accept it, he's got a good offensive reputation amongst the coaching ranks.

So back to what I said about most fans thinking playcalling is what held us back. Welp, you got what you wanted. A vacancy at offensive coordinator. At the end of January. A week before signing day. Who cares? We're Tennessee! We can hire anyone in the country, right? It's not just self-serving bias to ease the seven year itch of bad UT football. No not at all. So all these posters jump on Volnation, VQ, anything to get the inside scoop and be able to be the first one of their friends to make the right prediction. But then these posters start reading some names that interest them, not realizing that it's just conjecture from other fans. One poster says QB/ OC from TCU, and a thousand posters read it. There are some crazies that take this mentality of "this guy or bust". It's almost as if you guys have money on the line for which guy will get hired.

Eventually Debord interviews, visits with the team, etc. Then like a girl in an arranged marriage, you all say to yourself "well, what about MYYYY guy. I don't like this new guy". Look, we all got what we wanted and what was supposed to be the last piece of the puzzle, but you're just not going to get the up and comer guy as soon as you want. What we do get is a guy with a 52-11 OC record, a national championship ring, NFL coaching experience, familiarity with how butch operates, and above all else EXPERTISE AT COACHING O-LINE. oh? The thing we struggled with the most? Oh no, don't worry about that, our new up and comer coach will save us with his new scheme, replacing current staffers with his guys, and trying a double reverse pass in the fourth quarter. Guys TCU isn't in the mountain west anymore, and assistant coaches aren't going to move their families thousands of miles across the country just for a $50K pay increase. We were dealt a ****ty hand. And we're just about to finish cleaning up the mess. Let's see if the Comet works before going to get Lemon Pledge.

Rant over. Goodbye volnation. You are intolerable. Gonna go have a pint at the Winchester until this all blows over

Watch this game guys. It's the same offense. Amazing.

It really opened my eyes and changed my perspective in terms of fit. If he taught that to his team in less than a month then he can do just fine here. I just wish he was still in the game more recruiting etc but then again Coach Jake didn't recruit much at all. I also wish he had more QB experience but he could have been more involved there than we thought too.

Oh yeh, forgot it was such a plus to get a 60 yr old man with very little spread experience, no qb experience, been out of coaching and hasn't had good success as an Oc in any of our recruits lifetime. Even then his offenses were 'ok'. They won on mainly defense. You're right, home run hire.

Is this VOLorNuttin?

The Falcons have an Asst HC and its Raheem Morris. There isn't going to be a second one. It seems the VQ staff is being fed BS

Ya I had to double take on that. I thought I had seen a headline that said Morris was the new AHC of the Falcons.

Debord isn't a bad OC hire by any means, but he's certainly not a QB coach and he's not being considered as OC for an NFL team, so let's stop using his potential offers elsewhere as evidence for his being a good hire. I can't imagine his playcalling would be worse than Jake. I can't imagine his qb coaching would be better. Seems like we could find someone as an upgrade in both areas.

Dude, it's a message board. It's what fans do. Relax.

Exactly. I'm still watching the game and it's darn near a splitting image and he used Chad Henne to run it.

Just a crazy thought but what if Butch brought in Debord under no secrecy whatsoever as we know to consult him and the offense knowing the media would put his name out there and knowing that would help his mentor and friend land another job (falcons or other job) and all the while interviewing other candidates with more secrecy especially this close to signing day knowing we all just assume it's Debord as the cover.. Maybe I need to take another Tylenol...

Seriously? You realize that Bajakian did not have Dobbs until the end of the season, after which the offense was very potent?

You realize Hurd and Malone were true freshmen?

You realize that Kamara was in CC?

You realize that North and Pearson were often injured, and that Smith was out most of the year?

You realize that our offensive line was younger, thinner, and about as injured and out of place as it gets?

You realize that they tried to run the same offense that only works with a QB like Dobbs WITH A STATUE like Worley BECAUSE training our young players to run the offense that we will use for the next decade it a much better move than switching up the entire system for Worley, then learning the real offense again when it comes time for Dobbs to take over?

No. I don't think you do.

If I only had $1 billion dollars....

And somehow Dave Clawson is on his 2nd HC job since the awful performance in 2008. I guess you can't understand that each job does not relate to the other.

I mean my opinion doesn't mean anything or have any kind of power. just like yours. I just think this guys time is over as an OC. Its not 1997.

It is odd that one 'interview' occurred in Knoxville, over the course of 2 days, with minimal secrecy while the other interviews are apparently conducted covertly and quickly around the country. Maybe it's due to their current positions and any need (or lack thereof) for secrecy.

I enjoyed watching the vid on the UM/UF game because UF stunk.

The offense run by UM was very plain vanilla. The running game was simplistic and the passing game success was largely seam, skinny post and sideline go type patterns. UF was totally unprepared and apparently unmotivated. But yes, DeBord ran much of the same offense we see Butch using.
