In the 2011 season, Steele's D at Clemson gave up 26.2 points and was ranked #68 in points allowed per game, EXCLUDING the disastrous bowl game. They also gave up 45 to Maryland, 37 to NC State and 38 to UNC. Their O bailed them out a bunch.

I am sure his image has been rehabilitated back at Bama the last couple of seasons. Maybe he can get his mojo back.

better recruiter than he is a DC. Im sure he will recruit enough studs in that area to make himself look better as a DC

Look at his career though. Outside of that bad year.

Maybe Hart (and use this term loosely) maybe he blocked Dooley hiring someone because Dooley was a lame duck coach.

I don't even believe that.

Regardless of the hire I'm going to support the university and this team and that's all we can do. Recruits see it, fans see it, and more importantly our current players see it.

This next year is the most important year in our progress, I can't play, but I'll be at every game I can screaming till I can't anymore.

I also posted this in the "Around the NCAA" forum, but it makes me so happy I thought i'd post it here too.

I know CJM was recently hired in early December, but am I the only one that is shocked that UF is still having so much trouble recruiting? I remember Butch came in around the same time in December of 2012 and was able to get our class into the top 20.

But UF is striking out. If they don't close strong, does this reflect on CJM's ability to recruit at a high level at UF long term?

If Florida were in Conference USA, it currently would have the ninth best recruiting class according to Rivals. If it were in the Sun Belt Conference it would be tied for No. 6.

Those numbers are staggering enough. But when you look at the current rankings for the 14 SEC programs, the Gators are dead last.

And not just by a slim margin.

Florida is 51 spots behind the team with the second worst class in the conference — Vanderbilt, a program with seven winning seasons in the last 50 years.

“They’re in a tough position right now,” said Derek Tyson, the SEC recruiting analyst for ESPN. “At this point they’re just trying to get a class together to fill needs. … to service their scout team.”

:)

Florida’s class is ranked tied for 100th by Rivals, 87 by 247Sports and 73 by Scout. All three had Florida’s 2014 class in the top 10. The Gators are not alone. Michigan, which has had a similar two-year slide as Florida — 12-13 record compared to the Gators’ 11-13 — also is scrambling with Jim Harbaugh taking over for the fired Brady Hoke. The Wolverines are No. 103 in Rivals’ rankings.

“If this is a class you end up missing on all of them it could set you back a few years,” Tyson said.

Special Teams higher. Other than that, I'm ok with it.

Agreed. Special teams deserve an A, IMO.

Medley was money for a freshman. We scored on a punt return finally. Scored on a great trick play. Evan Berry is one of the top SEC kick returners. Didn't allow any scores on kickoffs or punt returns. Punting was solid. Kickoffs were solid. Elder did a great job this year.

McElwain is going to have a rebuild on his hands as daunting as Jones, perhaps even worse.

Which means if Butch doesn't put a beat down on the Gators for the foreseeable future he's not cut out for the SEC.

This was exactly what I was thinking, but was too lazy to type. Elder wins the most underrated coach award for the year IMO. Special Teams was a major point of concern prior to last year. Elder fixed it.

Nowhere near as bad as what Jones walked into.

Florida's class is so bad, they might as well not sign one this year. Add in the fact that they lose several talented Juniors and Seniors on both lines...it's close enough to warrant the comparison.

Ima drop this here:
Butch played this like a boss…

At first he was like, Dave I need a new OC…what’s my budget?

I agree with BOT.....for this year. If they don't get any talent in this recruiting class, then it will be every bit as bad as what Butch walked into. Unfortunately, from a coaching standpoint, I would guess that in your second year, to be where Butch was in his first, is probably a lot harder to come back from.

Florida is known for last minute closing on big name guys though, so he still has a chance to at least salvage an OK class.

Didn't allow any scores on kickoffs or punt returns.

Seriously?

I honestly didn't realize that. I thought coverage looked great, I just never thought that in depth about it.

Given how they've had crippling breakdowns in the past several seasons...that's worth an A by itself.

I'm already nervous about the UF game this year. It puts my stomach into knots every season, but this year? Oof. Unless the offensive line doesn't improve at all, there is just no reason they should win in 2015 (other than the fact that they own us, of course).

I can't even imagine the disappointment if we roll into Gainesville with such a loaded team and lose to a patchwork UF squad with a first-year head coach.

My hope is that Kentucky knocks them off in Lexington the week before and they're still shell shocked by the time we play them.

Look at his career though. Outside of that bad year.

I don't disagree with you. It just appeared to me his D's were beginning to slide despite the great talent he had to work with. He's had the opportunity to work with a master at it for a couple of seasons to gain some more knowledge. Will see if he can put it to good use. Great recruiter so the player pipeline should continue there.

Let's be real guys and gals, none of us have enough information to develop an education opinion on what's best for this football team. Avoid adopting a candidate as "your guy" because it's not gonna happen.
