In defense of Mike Debord:

Let me be real honest in this post. I was one of the 10% that liked it when Butch Jones was hired as head coach. If the truth was known, the same people that said Butch Jones's hire sucked , a waste, terrible hire, etc. are the ones crying and hollering about what a bad hire this dude would be. When I am paid nearly 4 million dollars per year to decide whom to hire, then and only then will I complain. I think Jones knows what he is doing...............he has proven it too me.i

Is there a bible of football philosophy that says one must EITHER run a read/option spread -OR- run a pocket passer, pro-style attack? Is there a such thing as multiple formations or are you only permitted to utilize one scheme or the other?

No.

Coordinators must only choose one...

Choose wisely...

What in the wide, wide world of sports are you talking about???

Debord was off coord 2 times 1997-1999, and 2006-2007.
Record by year when Debord was o,c.
1997 12-0
1998 10-3
1999 10-2

2006 11-2
2007 9-4

Each of those years, Michigan finished 1st or 2nd or tied for 1st or 2nd in the Big 10.

You people need to look stuff up before you post. Those 5 years were the "worst stretch of UM football ever?"

In '97, their defense gave up less than 10 points a game.

In both of his tenures, the offense averaged more than 30 PPG once.

DeBord may be a great guy and a great mentor, what he has never done is put a high powered offense by today's standards on the field.

This year, there were 58 teams that had offenses that scored more than 30 ppg as a point of reference.

Finally some logic!!

So, we compare 1997 scoring to 2014 scoring. I don't have stats, but I will about guarantee that scoring is higher now than in 1997. I do know that 4 Big 10 teams outscored Mich in ppg in 1997....OSU, Iowa, Purdue, and PSU.

Iowa 34.25
Purdue 33
Penn St 30.5
Ohio St 30.3

Maybe Michigan didn't feel the need to score 30, and didn't have to come from behind, so they played ball control. I think that you are grasping at straws while trying to put a negative spin on Debord.

EDIT:
1) Would you think that it is reasonable that Chaney tried to score as many points as possible in 2012, knowing that when his offense sat down, that the other team would probably score? Do you think that he was aggressive calling plays?

2) If you agree that is a reasonable assumption, would the opposite not also be true? Since Michigan had a defense that some said gave up only 10 points per game, wouldn't the offensive coordinator be less likely to take chances , and call a wide open game? That could result in the 7 points fewer per game than the Big 10 leader Iowa.

By the way, there were 12 teams in the Big 10 in 1997, so Michigan scored more ppg than 7 of them, and less than 4.

Well, I have no clue how this will work out but it could turn out to be a good hire. My two reasons why: experience and motivation. He has a lot of experience with OL which is very helpful for us and I'm sure he knows a thing or two since being a former head coach even if he has posted a horrendous record. His motivation is simple, to prove he can still coach efficiently. But I guess we'll see.

You guys really think Butch would risk his career with this hire?

Check dools n sal hire...yes yr 3 n he made the stupidest hire possible n butch is doing exactly the same thing...

If true butch is doomed. Sunshine sheep get in line because yr 3 will test your faith in the Shepard that's leading u. U followed dools n he was a stupid a$$ n now u follow butch who has an unlimited budget n is hiring afreaking has been..geez but keep donating n supporting hart..

it will be DeBord. Something really crazy would have to happen in the next 48 hours to alter that IMO

Freaking insanity but hey yr 3. No excuses he either wins or fire his ass like dools n move on. Simple 6 or 7 wins n he should be fired..

Geez the threads about give him time he needs his players to run his off...ground hog day for 6 yrs..

This thread is about reasons he should be hired.

Being able to find a job and running tennessee's offense are very different.
I will back Butch either way, but this hire feels like we fumbled at the half yard line again.
I honestly pray I'm wrong!
There are so many excellent potential candidates out there... Butch is either an absolute genius or letting his heart skew his vision. We just to wait and see.

I feel the same way. This feels like a Bajakian double reverse with Striker blowing up the backfield.

The one thing about this hire is we only have to wait and see for half a season. If he doesn't get it done IMMEDIATELY (no Year Zero, the bricks are here and ready) it is a colossal failure of a hire.

It could truly end up being Sal Sunseri bad.

He could be the perfect fit though, doesn't shake the tree, just implements what the guys know (I would like to see him improve the short-yardage offense), and we don't miss a beat. Just have to wait and see.
