In defense of Mike Debord:

1) How much can one possibly forget about football if you have been successful before?

2) He is a proven winner.

3) I recall people whining about Cutcliffe the last time he was here. He wasn't imaginative enough blah, blah, blah...Looks like he has done ok as an "Old Man"

4) Does anyone honestly think that Butch Jones would risk his career here by hiring someone that couldn't recruit or couldn't call plays or couldn't scheme??? That just would make zero sense.

5) It's Jones offense anyways....not a lot will change.

Now having said this, I may look at other candidates, but I'm not the guy in charge and DeBord and Jones know a whoooole lot more about football than I do.

GO VOLS!!!

Can we at least wait until the press conference when the new OC is named. I have seen this a lot on here. It might not even be Debord. He may just be helping Butch come up with someone good.

The thread says in defense of Mike Debord. Here's my defense, I wasn't exactly jumping for joy when I heard Butch's name for the first. I'll just let it play out. I don't have enough money to force CBJ hand.

Why should a discussion of the merits of the leading OC candidate be suppressed until AFTER the probable hire is announced?

He hasn't coached or recruited in college in the better part of a decade.

When he did, he ran a vanilla, traditional offense.

Sounds like a perfect fit

This is dumb. Vanilla and traditional is the IDEAL offense if you are confident you can recruit top talent.

Letting your players line up and just be better than the guy across from them is fine. Bama and LSU have been doing it for years.

So you think we're changing schemes?

True, and we don't even know if he would be hire for OC or another position, or Co-coordinator.

Why isn't Gruden coaching? He got fired from his last job...

Gruden is still very active in football however and isn't an Olympic sports coordinator.
Unless qb strategy has become an Olympic sport.
Jk

I bet chucky can curl his butt off though!

No offense and just for conversational purposes only, how is he a proven winner? His record at CMU was horrible and he was at the forefront of arguably the worst stretch of UM football ever.

You do know his first year as OC at Michigan was 1997 the year they went 12-0 and although didn't deserve it shared the NC with Nebraska?

His 2nd year his QB was Tom Brady who broke several Michigan passing records that year.

That might be considered successful as an OC.

We'll have trust Butch, its his decision to make.
Exactly right. I don't think he would jeopardize his job making a crazy hire. He definitely knows more than I do. We're still going to be dangerous no matter what he does. To be honest I was very skeptical about UT hiring butch and so far its been promising. I thought they hired him in panic mode because the first offer or so was turned down. Shows how much I know. Cant wait until the first game!!
