One of the main functions of a democratic government is to protect its people. Native Americans (of which I am one) deserve every bit of protection from hate speech that are afforded to everyone else.

Governments by habit only protect themselves, not their people. We can only protect ourselves. The government will probably be shooting at us someday.

The definition of 'hate speech' is at question here. Sometimes we become so accustomed to the status quo, we can't (or don't) 'see' the negative consequences of our thoughts and actions. My grandmother STILL tosses around the N word when discussing black people. It makes me cringe and drives me crazy every time she does it. My entire family tries to correct her. She seems genuinely sorry it happened. She's done it all her life though.

This situation is the same. Non native-Americans don't have the ability or foresight to understand the negative impact of the word Redskins. I'm 46 years old and have been a sports fan my whole life. The Redskins were part of my life as a young child. When this argument first gained traction, I was upset the government (or native-Americans or whomever) were trying to take away the name. "Why do they have the right to take this from life-long fans..." yada yada yada.

I was wrong. This is an issue that should've been addressed decades ago. Our native-American families deserve better. Change the name.

Why should society as a whole cater to a five percent minority? It's redicious how the masses are being punished these days for something that 5% are butthurt about. It's like banning guns because of school shootings.

Politicians should be focused on something called doing their job instead of nitpicking words. Politicians should be hung down highway 80 because they are guilty of treason.

Yeah, I have very little sympathy for fans who are upset someone is trying to take a name away from them. Football is a sport, a derogatory term for a person's skin color is something much deeper and cuts people in ways beyond anything in sports.

Easy to say when you're not the minority. There's a reason the Redskins catch so much flack for their name. It's because Redskin is a derogatory term for Native Americans invented by whites. It would be like naming a team the porch monkeys.

I think one of the things that people have trouble with in this team name issue is that they associate this with all the cases of people trying to change names of smaller schools and high schools that had Indian heritage names. I know there was lots of outcry to change names of schools that their logos were "Cherokees", "Aztecs", "Seminoles" etc. and I don't find those to be offensive but actually the opposite. (And I do have Native American ancestors) but the Redskins issue is different because it comes from an offensive history. You would never have a team named after a slang word for African Americans or Hispanics. So I don't think they should have one for native Americans

I just happen to be a part of the group who always gets screwed by things like college admissions, quotas, and other things that discriminate. Minorities these days get everything handed to them. In Ca., an illegal immigrant can go to Cal for free while I couldn't get in.

Yep, life is hard for us white folk.

Here's the big question.

Who determines if a term is derogatory?

Laws exist to protect the minority. Otherwise the majority destroys them. This is actually the point of having a society.

Burger, it's becoming clearer why you have trouble finding love. You need to start extending more love and kindness yourself. You seem to be full of negativity towards everyone.

Lol, its easy to see why I put that clown on ignore. Burger, if you're really being "punished" by a football team having to change an offensive name, I pray to God you never have to be truly persecuted for anything.

Btw, do that masses really want to keep the name or is it 1 stubborn owner and many of their fans?

Don't use college admissions as something that discriminates aginst you... That's easily fixable, get better grades and better test scores.

I could care less about the name. It's the fact that the government is controlling what is and isn't offensive. Blacks target whites for muggings and petty crime. That's happened to me a few times.

These laws that cater the minorities are double standards like affirmative action.

Why extend love to people who will never love ya or extend it back? I'm like a turd that's waiting to be flushed down the toilet. I bet if I died tomorrow nobody would care.

That's why God invented the pistol. I guarantee you no one is mugging me, black, white, Asian, Latino, etc.

Burger, please believe me when I say to you that it would behoove you to politely bow out of this conversation. I don't think you can conceive how bad you are making yourself look.

It's a felony to carry a pistol in holster in Ca. As pathetic as that is. I wish open carry was legal here. Liberals here are scared of guns.

I believe that if you research it you'll find that Native Americans first used the terms Red Skin and redskin to differentiate between "red men, white men and black men" as early as the late 1700's. It probably has nothing to do with all that is being argued today in the effort to do away with Washington's nickname but I've learned that the terms "colored person" and "negro" are also considered to be racist terms by some black people. I have a longtime black friend that despises the term "African-American" because he was born and raised in Tennessee and considers himself an American and not connected to Africa. He said no one that he knows born in America refers to themselves as English-Americans, Scotch-Americans, Irish-Americans or French Americans, just as Americans.

Edit: I'm not taking sides on the Washington nickname discussion, just stating that the white man did not start using it first. If it is considered derogatory by American Indians then I'll accept that. I have family that fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam that belonged to labor unions for years and they are offended because some current American and Tennessee politicians refer to them as "communists" because they were/are union members.

Here is an easy litmus test. If a group of people is offended by the term given to them, its derogatory.

Not trying to be argumentetive but I'm also from Native American decent, partialy, and that term does not offend me at all. Of course I haven't researched the origins and revolution of the term. The only way I've seen it used is as a nickname of a football team.

Your test is not as cut and dried as you make it out to be. It is inconceivable to me that if I use a certain term, it is offensive to a large group of people; however, if they use the term to refer to themselves or others within the group, it is perfectly acceptable.

I'm an ugly guy. I look bad when I look into the mirror. Doesnt bug me. What bugs me is the government trying to tell people what they can and can't do. I hate how a native with a 2.9 gets into college over a white/Asian with a 3.5.

I also think that terms evolve over time and that we are not bound by the history of a term. I personally believe it is a racist term, obviously many people agree with me. It doesn't matter much to me how it once was used. I also don't apply my ethics to those who lived 300 years ago, so I see no need to held to the standard they set for themselves.
