The Problem of Whiteness

The other day I missed the wastebasket from maybe 4 feet away with a wadded up piece of paper. Co-worker who was standing there...and just happens to be black...summed it up nicely: "White guy, 4 feet away, saw that coming all day."

We both laughed. My only problem with "whiteness" is that he can pull off outfits that would make me look like I came in 2nd for the role of Al Czervik in Caddyshack.

Well...that, and when I dance sometimes people try to do the Heimlich Maneuver on me.

Beyond that, I'm good.

Does he have a vette though??

Asians don't consider themselves a minority nor do they feel there is a glass ceiling.

They work hard and if things aren't going well they work even harder.

Asians still earn less on average than white men with same level of educational attainment.

So you are wrong. They are still subject to white supremacy as well.

A quick question, D4H: Since you have mentioned reparations in this thread, how would such be paid?

Woud they simply be a check from the gov't? But wouldn't that also be coming from the taxes that blacks and other minorities also pay? Can't have blacks paying for their own reparations, so that won't do.

So, should reparations only be paid by white people? What % of their income would be sufficient for your reparations, and how would that be determined? Do poor whites also have to pay? I mean, they ARE white and thus have white privilege even if poor... Also, do the white people whose families immigrated here in the past 100 years or so pay less since they were not apart of the institution of slavery? Should descendants of former slave owners pay more?

What amount of reparations will resolve your "white supremacy" problem? Why should white people now, the vast majority of whom have no connection to slavery or Jim Crow, have to pay money to black people who likewise lack such a connection?

Whereas taxes are taken and distrubuted for the overall public good, reparations for only one race (and likewise taken from one race) would be an absolutely abominable thievery.

Reparations... Money paid for slavery from people who never owned slaves, to people who were never slaves.

They need Chemist at Jack Daniels. Come on down here in the hills of Moore County Carl.

I'd love to live down that way. When I was a kid my grandparents lived in Normandy just down the road from Dickel...... that's what I consider God's country.

You know some folks over there? At JD?

This makes too much sense. Just give him the freakin' money. D4H deserves it.

But this has happened before. Multiple times. By both the United States and other governments. The United States has ALREADY paid reparations to Japanese Americans and Native Americans for crimes committed by the US government. See here: https://www.mtholyoke.edu/~kmporter/historyreparations.htm

The thing you need to realize is slavery was NOT an individual crime. It wasn't simply one slave owner brutalizing a slave. It was a STATE SANCTIONED CRIME AGAINST AFRICAN AMERICANS. That is why the majority of your post is irrelevant. Whether or not poor whites were involved doesn't matter. Whether or not recent immigrants were involved doesn't matter. Whether or not blacks would be paying into the reparations themselves in the form of taxes doesn't matter. The issue here is governmental not individual. The United States government not "white people" is the entity that is culpable for slavery since it sanctioned it.

And just as the United States government has had to pay reparations to Japanese Americans for mistreatment during WW2 and to Native Americans for land stolen and mistreatment throughout history, African Americans likewise deserve reparations for their mistreatment during slavery. The mechanism for how these reparations will be funded and paid out already exists. It been used multiple times already.

If Japanese Americans and Native Americans have already been given reparations, why not African Americans as well?

Asains have the highest household income of any race in America.

True. But that is because they typically have the highest education attainment of any race. So it shouldn't surprise anyone they make more. However, my point is still true. If we control for educational attainment Asian Americans make LESS on than whites. See here: A closer look at Asian-American income | Economic Policy Institute

In her blog post on the earnings differences among interracial couples, the New York Times‘ Catherine Rampell concludes: “So basically, what these numbers are reflecting is that Asians earn more money, period, which is generally true across the population of Asian-Americans and has been the case for a while.” This is true when looking at household and family income, but there is a different and more complicated story underneath these numbers.

It is important to recognize that many more Asian Americans have college degrees than whites. This 2010 EPI report found that nearly 60 percent of Asian American workers have a bachelor’s or higher degree compared to about 40 percent of white workers. College-educated workers tend to earn more than less-educated workers and this pulls up the median Asian American earnings.

When one compares the annual personal income of Asian Americans and whites of the same gender and educational level, Asian Americans do not always come out on top. The figure below shows these comparisons for workers with a high school diploma and with a bachelor’s degree. In 2010, among workers with a high school diploma, white men earned about $11,000 more than white women and Asian American men and women.

Among workers with a bachelor’s degree, white men remain the highest earners, but their earnings advantage over Asian American men is only about $5,000. In this comparison, Asian American women and white women earn significantly less than Asian American men. Asian American women earn about $11,000 less than Asian American men, and white women earn about $13,000 less than Asian American men. This puts Asian American and white women at about $16,000 and $18,000 behind white men, respectively.

Another issue to consider is that Asian Americans are more concentrated than whites in high-cost-of-living areas. Asian Americans are overrepresented in expensive metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Honolulu. Given this fact, controlling for educational attainment, Asian Americans should earn more than whites, but as the figure illustrates, they often don’t.

This basically proves the old adage that to be treated the same as a white man, you gotta be twice as good. Asian Americans with college degrees do better than whites without a college degree. But when you equalize education, whites still get paid more.

That is what white supremacy is.

So ultimately, reparations will be paid by taxpayers were were never involved with the act of slavery at all?

Taxpayers had nothing to do with interning the Japanese (that was all President Roosevelt and the government) but we paid them reparations. Taxpayers had nothing to do with the multiple instances of genocide against Native Americans (that was Andrew Jackson and the US military) but we paid them reparations. Its funny how reparations only becomes a problem with black people get mentioned.

And even more funny reparations were actually promised two centuries ago. Remember the post slavery promise by the US government of "40 acres a mule" for all freed slaves? See here: The Truth Behind '40 Acres and a Mule' | African American History Blog | The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross

We’ve all heard the story of the “40 acres and a mule” promise to former slaves. It’s a staple of black history lessons, and it’s the name of Spike Lee’s film company. The promise was the first systematic attempt to provide a form of reparations to newly freed slaves, and it was astonishingly radical for its time, proto-socialist in its implications. In fact, such a policy would be radical in any country today: the federal government’s massive confiscation of private property — some 400,000 acres — formerly owned by Confederate land owners, and its methodical redistribution to former black slaves. What most of us haven’t heard is that the idea really was generated by black leaders themselves.

It is difficult to stress adequately how revolutionary this idea was: As the historian Eric Foner puts it in his book, Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877, “Here in coastal South Carolina and Georgia, the prospect beckoned of a transformation of Southern society more radical even than the end of slavery.” Try to imagine how profoundly different the history of race relations in the United States would have been had this policy been implemented and enforced; had the former slaves actually had access to the ownership of land, of property; if they had had a chance to be self-sufficient economically, to build, accrue and pass on wealth. After all, one of the principal promises of America was the possibility of average people being able to own land, and all that such ownership entailed. As we know all too well, this promise was not to be realized for the overwhelming majority of the nation’s former slaves, who numbered about 3.9 million.

So what happened to this promise of reparations?

And what happened to this astonishingly visionary program, which would have fundamentally altered the course of American race relations? Andrew Johnson, Lincoln’s successor and a sympathizer with the South, overturned the Order in the fall of 1865, and, as Barton Myers sadly concludes, “returned the land along the South Carolina, Georgia and Florida coasts to the planters who had originally owned it” — to the very people who had declared war on the United States of America.

So there you have it. The US government knew they were in the wrong for how they treated African Americans. They knew reparations were necessary. And they were ready to implement it in 1865. But instead of honoring the promise of giving African Americans 40 acres and a mule, they reneged. And started the spiral of inequity black people have been living in ever since.
