Official Jon Gruden thread 32.

This Sunday feels like every other Sunday for the last month or so.
Sunday morning -Everyone wakes up hungry for news of a press conference announcement.

Sunday afternoon -No press conference today so that must mean it will be on Monday replacing the normal weekly presser.

Sunday night/Monday morning -The thread is flooded with rumors and information from "people close to the situation" that all point to it being done and will become official on Monday.

Monday press conference -Butch marches out firing off cliches looking forward to the next game while fielding softball questions from the media.

Vol fans everywhere -

Yep. Same thing is going to happen this week.

Someone please explain to me what possible good can come of retaining Butch as coach? The only thing I see at this point is that by retaining him, the fan base gets more and more disgruntled/disgusted, and things could get really ugly, which would not be good for Tennessee's image. Let the man go for goodness sake.

At this point, if I were Currie and was turned down by Gruden, I certainly would make it known somehow publicly that HE turned us down. That we gave more than a generous offer and the ball was in his court.

I'm tired of messing around if Gruden decides against it. I love the fact he considers Tennessee a great school and whatnot, but in my irritability factor this morning, I'd dump a tanker truck's worth of gasoline on that bridge and strike a match. I'd make sure everyone knew he was the one that was unreasonable in the discussions.

Call it a petty, scorned ex-girlfriend posting your information on a VD alert site type of move, but I'd damn sure make everyone know we bent over backwards to accommodate the hire.

This could be because I'm tired, cranky and downright angry over what happened last night. But that's how I feel.

I agree with this. As a fan, I’d want to know we at least tried to swing for the fence.

Only the ones who even know they are shareholders (not as a part of a fund) which isn't the lion's share when they aren't sitting at the table themselves.

Also the reason that I refuse Mr. SFD's insistence that I get into day trading. My return on time investment would be miniscule.

Unless you buy in mass bulk.

First, Gruden wants the job. This is his preferred job. Over all the other jobs. I have this on very good authority. I know. I know. Unnamed sources aren't tolerated. I don't really care.

Second, we believe all the boosters are now rowing in the same direction. The only problem then would be Currie standing in the way which would be career suicide. Unlikely. Although he may be hesitating to pull the butvh trigger because it wasn't his initial plan.

Third, these sorts of transitions are incredibly complex. It is silly to think this is as simple as firing one coach and hiring another. Information must be closely guarded. There is so.much.money at stake here on every side. Currie has a tremendously vested interest in misdirecting and sending out false info. These things happen all the time in the corporate world. The difference is there aren't fans of companies like P&G becoming OCD about reading a chat board over it.

This is a very true statement, and although I do respect your insight and point of view... This process does include the firing of the present coach.... Butch is still here and Currie is letting this program burn to the ground...

I appreciate the fact most of you still think Gruden.

2012 is coming back with a vengeance from my perspective.

All the friends of the AD staff, expensive scotch, cryptic drive-bys, MOU talk, ESPN trucks at Holiday Inn, etc..etc.. can make me believe Gruden is coming.

No UTVolinExile, I don't need to take my medicine.

Keep believing all you want. I don't begrudge you that.

For me, though, it is EXACTLY like 2012.

At this point, if we can get Butch off campus, it'll at least be a start to putting all of this behind us.

I briefly considered putting together a list of all the ways this is NOTHING like 2012. But then I realized I have other and better ways to spend my morning, and it wouldn't actually change anything for most people.

I don't begrudge your opinion on insiders and their sources. But try to have some consistency, and don't let yourself get dragged back and forth, it's not healthy. If that means sticking with your skepticism of insiders, fantastic. We can still celebrate together when the announcement comes. :)

People have said that nobody on this staff wants to be the coach so if they beat Vandy who is gonna take over for butch for the bowl game? Cause butch will wanna move on and try and get a job.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the assistants are paid employees. They can be told what to do. If Currie doesn't have the balls to do that we're in a world of hurt.

I agree with 100%!

If we offered and Gruden declined, the AD should get the story out. It would establish that we are serious about football again!

Currie is losing more of this fan base every week when we get embarrassed. Firing Botch at least sends the message that he cares about the program

I agree. What has Currie done right? Has he shown decisive leadership? Has he shut down the supposed leaks? He has allowed this to fester and now has a miserable fan base. Our program is a laughingstock.

He obviously cannot control the booster side or the Gruden camp, but I promise if I had leaks from within the AD, they would be escorted out of the building.

He better hope the hire ignites the fan base or he won't be long for UT either. He lets the season play out as it has and comes to the podium with a google coach, he can GTFO as well.
