You have to make an effort, but skill is what sets most good rebounders apart, IMO. Rodman didn't try twice as hard as everyone else. He got twice as many rebounds because he knew where the ball was going before everyone else did.

I remember him saying he would study film, and watch where the ball would go if it hit certain areas of the rim, from various distances. It helped that he was a ridiculously quick jumper and never took his eye off the ball during a shot.
