This is not an apples to apples comparison. As Adeger noted, the surrounding cast makes all of the difference. Gillespie wasn't brought here to carry this team, and he's never been that guy. As a freshman at Belmont, he had (future NBA player) Ben Sheppard, as well as the conference freshman of the year Cade Tyson. As a sophomore at Belmont, he had Malik Dia and Tyson. After transferring to Maryland, he was on a pretty good team that had Rodney Rice and Derik Queen. He was never the primary scoring option, which is the role he has had to undertake this year. I don't think it was the intent, but since Ament isn't as close to an NBA player yet, as we were (somewhat) led to believe, the scoring has fallen to JG. Also, Estrella hasn't met most expectations. If you throw some of the former players into this mix, whether it be Knecht, Lanier, Vescovi, etc, Ja'Kobi's game is completely different.
Another thing that I continue to see pop up in multiple threads is that he isn't a PG, but is a SG. Not sure how this started, or how it keeps being repeated. He has been a point guard in HS, @ Belmont, and @ Maryland. He's never been a shooting guard. He was a bit sloppy early on, but, overall, the turnovers had been reduced since the first few games. Florida was a buzzsaw, and the timing of the turnovers in his recent couple of games are magnified based on the time of the occurrence.
Anyway, it's a reasonable discussion to have, but I don't think it's fair to compare them without taking the supporting cast into the equation.
