You think hiring a proven HC doesn't matter?

Tn Football was dead in 2017. We had two 9 win seasons and consecutive bowl wins prior to 2017. We were not dead in those years.

It's dead. That's why Butch Jones was our coach lol. We had two 9 win seasons and still couldn't win the lowly east lol.

What gets me is the amount of so called fans that already dismiss Pruitt being able to turn it around. When it truth it is way to early to even suggest that. For goodness sakes he is 5 games in, it's absurd. And what is more annoying is they continue to post the same blather every day. No doubt we have a ways to go, but I don't need somebody telling me how to feel and what to expect going into a game. Instead of discussing where we need to get better and where we see signs of improvement or no improvement it is just the same ol misery we are never going to get better. If you feel that way why do you stay here, at least give Pruitt time people before you put him out to the pasture. I think we are going to see improvement as the year moves forward and I still got hope we can win 6. That's my opinion, you don't have to like it and it may or may not turn out to be right but if all you got is your a homer or you in fantasy world just move on. I am a fan and I like this staff, I think our O-coordinator could do a better job but I will wait till the year is done before I flog him right now. Even Pruitt has said we have to do better with the play calling, I am looking for continued improvement all the way around. The players need fans and support and they are going to get it from me until the season is over. GBO!!!!!!!

Speaking of proven head coaches, I would like to add this to the thread.

Jon Gruden is the most overrated, to the tune of 10 million per year, head coach in all of professional sport.

Hold on to that ring real tight Jon.

Your gift was in the broadcast booth

The point is that he was never contacted during the Schiano fiasco. He would’ve came to UT in a heartbeat. BUT...let’s flip the tables, Mullen goes to UT and Pruitt goes to UF. Pruitt beats our rears just like Mullen did lol! Tennessee is a cursed football program. I’m beginning to believe this will never get fixed.
Another Saban cronie lol I would of gave up my fandom after that

No offense to Pruitt mostly because of the last 2 guys

Trying to imitate bama a third time smh wow

Fla running a spread o with a great offensive mind like Mullen and fla speed all over the field is the biggest threat to bama imo

Georgia is doing a hell of a job copying them I’ll give them that but I’m not sure it gets them the w over saban in atl

I recall it being that way also and Mullen for some reason didn't get a Saturday a.m. phone call and took it as UT didn't have any interest in him. I strongly feel he preferred UT over UF.

There were people that didnt want pruitt, just as there would have been fit any coach. Outside of those people, literally noone has changed their mind in 5 games. Just another "Im a true fan" tagline.

You realize Scott Stricklin the guy that hired him at MSU is now at UF right also the 2 national titles

Good relationship with AD is important for a coach I would imagine

Plus there isn’t a better state to recruit for his offense then fla

It is amazing that other coaches come in, get to work, and get results.

Tennessee is always a "process"

I despise UF, and hate they are doing well, but I kinda feared this would happen.

Just my opinion but I feel and did before season UF would be ahead of us this year due to Mullen however Pruitt has more upside for down the road...

He was all UF.
He didn't try to inform UT about the Florida offer wanting a counter, he simply jumped at the chance to go to UF. It's where he wanted.
We had a dysfunctional athletic department and everyone wants to believe they just screwed up but Mullen never attempted for a counter.
Mullen wanted UF like Kiffin and USC.

No offense, Good coach but I hope despite your fertile recruiting grounds, his lack of elite recruiting hampers his progress. Would have limited him slightly more here than in Florida.

Everybody in the sec can forgot about beating bama this year or next. Nobody can slow their offense or put up enough points to keep up period. Florida is playing good but y'all lose by 30+. If Saban didn't pull starters after the first half it would be really embarrassing. Never seen an offense like that.

What? They are 5-1 with their only loss being by 3 to USC. They were a top 15 team last year. He's doing it at a program that was 8-40 the 4 years before he got there. He'd average 40+ a game in the SEC with the talent that is afforded a coach at Tennessee.
Keep believing that.

Might be near death but the post stated we have been dead for a long time. That is not an accurate statement, not during the Dobb's era.
What did Tennessee accomplish during the Dobbs era? Did they win a natty? Did the win a SEC championship? Did they win the east? No. So what exactly did they accomplish?

Two bowl wins. Do you think UT has an inherent right to win Sec and National Championships to have a successful season ? I would like Tennessee to have a top 10 program every year since the 98 championship and am disappointed the program did not stay at that level but you cannot have everything you wish for.

He's at Washington State because Tennessee idiotically didn't honor the MOU he'd signed to coach here. Other than that, it's because he refused to lie under oath at the direction of his AD at Texas Tech.

As for the rest of your post, he had a top 15 offense and defense in the nation last year at Washington State. Washington State is a worse program historically than Vanderbilt. Texas Tech was just as bad historically as Kentucky/Vandy etc. He got them into the top 10 in the country while there.

He's a great great coach. He lost a guy he'd turned into a great quarterback last year. Replaced him with a grad transfer from East Carolina this year. They are 5-1 with a 3 point loss to USC and are averaging 42 points per game. They've been to 3 straight bowls, went 6-3 twice and 7-2 once in the Pac 10 the last 3 years. Once again, at Washington State, which is, as I said, a worse program than Vanderbilt historically. They were 9-40 in the 4 years before he got there.

Somehow, after all his bumbling Currie hit a 9th inning walk-off homerun. Only there was weird fan interference at the last second and the homerun was ruled an out.

The other sad thing about that is that Mike Leach produces coaches and we missed out on that. His current coaching tree includes West Virgina's head coach, Oklahoma's head coach, Texas Tech's head coach, Central Florida's head coach, and Neal Brown at Troy. Those guys are 27-4 this year combined and 3 of them were ranked in the top 12 this week. Art Briles was also on his coaching tree, he won a whole lot of football games himself. We desperately need a coach that can develop head coaches and Leach does it and does it well.

So basically we hired a completely green/unproven assistant over someone who has rebuilt two of the worst programs in NCAA history and who produces generations of great future coaches. Most likely because, as has been mentioned, he basically doesn't allow the AD to force him into bad situations without standing up for himself.

Pretty good argument. I was on board with Leach after the shat storm by Currie. However, I will stand by the recipe that produces championships. Which is line play, strong run game, and defense. That's a time tested formula and is as true today (Bama, UGA) as it was during Neyland's day. Leach would have found success here because, like you pointed out, he is a very good coach. I dont know if he would have won a championship though. However, considering we have struggled to post winning records, consistent 8-9 win seasons with a fun coach and offense wasn't a bad option. I probably would have bought a boat and been part of the Vol pirates

Only reason we did not beat UF 4 straight years was Butch Jones. UF just beat LSU.
They are 5 -1 and 3 -1 in the SEC. I guess UF was loaded to begin this year?
Looks like they do not have to wait 4 years to turn it around.
I am not throwing JP under the bus. This is aimed at the UT decision makers.
You get what you pay for and UT is just not willing to do that.
Doesn't matter to UCLA, Florida St or Nebraska. 1 success after many more failures does not mean that's how it needs to be done. We've got a good coach and it's suprising to me that we have a bunch of fans that don't see it, probably the same ones that loved Jones at 1 time.

If I remember correctly Currie was called back by Davenport when it was learned he was speaking with Leach. Leach sued his former employers and that is why the UT administration wanted no part of Leach as a head coach at UT. I personally believe Leach would have been a good coach here with his high scoring offense even though the defense may have be suspect. He is funny as hell during his press conferences.

Fulmer wanted a defensive coach. Had nothing to do with O. They tried to hire Hugh Freeze as OC and it got shot down by SEC.

As far as fans in general I agree with you, I think most folks are still behind Pruitt. But as far as this board goes seems like a lot of anti-Pruitt folks out there. But I agree it's just the loud minority on a keyboard. GBO!!!!!
