Would you hire this coach?

Gruden is part of a very very short list of coaches (college or NFL) who could come to Knoxville and immediately eliminate some of UT's natural crootin' disadvantages.

So did Fulmer, Kiffin, and Dooley. Something tells me these disadvantages aren't as big as people make them out to be. Unless we get absurdly lucky with hiring coaches who can recruit, of course.

Hell yes! Those are NFL numbers.

I wonder if anybody would be happy with this coach If we hired him? Just want you to see his record. Do you think this is a homerun hire?

And OP also isn't incorporating the fact that the TB Bucs were horribly run by their GM and their Owner was more concerned with making money than spending it to be competitive. Giving up the 2002/2003 1st Rounds and 2002/2004 2nd Rounders hurt Tampa bay for many years to come. Gruden had to hold onto an aging defense that was eating up a huge portion of the TB's paltry allowance of cap and he also didn't run the team's draft.

But, you know, whatever. Facts and stuff.

Since you like "facts" so much, go ahead and look up how many times Monte Kiffin was able to trot out a top-10 defense with that "aging" defense, lack of draft picks, and bad GM/owners. That "aging" defense is the #1 reason Grubage had as many wins in Tampa as he did. Without that "aging" defense to bail out his pathetic offense, Gruden would have been gone before 2008.

So we have found our 1% that won't be happy with Gruden. Somebody get the list started.

Go ahead and put me as #1 on that list. I want the guy fired already, and nothing's even come out whether or not he's even going to be the coach. I don't want that sack of trash anywhere NEAR the Volunteers. I'd rather have Bear Bryant's corpse.

Actually, he had one disappointing season in the last 4. 11-5, 9-7, 9-7 were 3 of those. Pretty darned good considering he never did have a franchise QB. It's now understood in the NFL, that you HAVE to have a marquee QB to win in the league. You will struggle without one.

Or, as stated above, you can have a first ballot HOF DC putting a top 10 defense on the field 5/6 years you're there.....

Dungy was/is an excellent coach.

These facts don't take away from the fact that Gruden is also a great coach with a SuperBowl win. His later years were largely crippled by the fact that Tampa's management traded two first round draft picks and two second round draft picks to the Raiders to get Gruden to begin with.

A record above .500 in the NFL is impressive because of the parity. If Gruden averages .500 against teams with equal resources in the SEC (Bama, UF, UGA, etc), then he will be putting up 9-10 win seasons pretty much every year. I don't think anyone will complain about that.

-Agreed on Dungy.
-See above to the rest.

Then why did they trade the farm to get Gruden if Dungy was so hot. Did you see what they gave up to get Gruden?

Good point, and I tried to make the point about how important the coach is with what John L. Smith has done at Arkansas.

As you make so clear, the D was built when he got there, but he didn't have the resources needed to build a more complete offense. Despite that, he won a SuperBowl and made it to the playoffs two other times at Tampa.

It is also convenient that you completely ignore his successes at Oakland.

It's clear that one side of the ball, no matter how good, can't completely carry a team. The Vols this year have the second best offense (statistically) in the SEC, yet they are continually getting beat. The 2008 Volunteers were ranked #3 in the nation (tied with Bama actually) in total D, yet they still had a losing record. Gruden did less with more to get that offense efficient enough to win. Further, the Head Coach should get the credit and blame for their assistant coach hiring and rentention rates. Gruden benefitted from that D, because he kept Monte happy and on staff until the end of the 2008 season. Our current coach doesn't seem to have the ability to retain anyone but Cheney and Hinshaw.

Not mentioning these were pro football records and not mentioning the super bowl win was kinda shady.

Not to mention if not for that stupid tuck rule Raiders would have beaten Patriots and avanced in play offs.
