WNBA discussion thread?

Dang! Hartley got away with that definitely deliberate hair-pull on Reese. It was not accidental -- it was a prolonged pull in which Reese's head got pulled back. I really can't blame Reese for getting ticked off about that.

Only Reese and Charles ended up suffering consequences.

I hope Chicago ends up winning this game after all that.

They were without two starters, one being Jonquil. I don't think losing this game was a big deal to them.
At 9-1, I don't think the NYL are pushing any panic buttons. They and the Lynx are a level above everybody else but all teams have off games, as the Lynx did against the Storm.

Though with Stewie getting 24 and Sabrina putting up 34, I would not say that they had an "off game" so much as the Fever were incredibly hot (ugh, no pun intended) at 17 for 35 from 3.

Jones is a big absence for the Liberty. She and Stewie are an almost impossible tandem to guard.

Heck of a return for Clark though. She came down to Earth in the 2nd half but her first half was unreal. She should have about 15 assists if her teammates could have made some lay-ups.

I noticed she got visibly upset whenever the ball did not circle back to her for her jumper, even when her team scored. She must have felt like everything was going to go in.

Triple double for Reese and a win for the Sky. The b-ball gods granted your wish. But why are wasting those on the Sky? We needed you for the NCAA tournament!!! ;)

Really having a fit over not getting the pass. Rickea says hold my beer. Let CC come play with Plum and Hamby. CC seems likable in real life but transforms into a real a hole on court. Part of her skill set I guess.

Awesome for Angel getting the trip double and fitting she did it in the most Angel way possible - shot 28% and only had 2 field goals. The 10 assists are very impressive, she’s seeing the floor really well and as always plays so hard.

The hair pulling scuffle was also vintage Angel since thats not exactly an unknown tactic to her. In fact, throughout the incident you can see Kamilla laughing, no doubt thinking “Now you know how it feels sister”.

It ended welll, AR and Tina Charles hugged it out after the game.

HVL had a nice game today. She really needed that, she’s been buried on the bench.

I couldn't help but notice that Van Lith has done some work on her body, looking a bit leaner than she started the year at. Unless it was just a tv camera illusion, it could help her get just enough more capable of earning more playing time. I always heard great things about her work ethic when she was in college. The players who understand the hardest body-work was going to be necessary to keep a roster spot in the W are the smartest, most resilient players. They can never coast.

And she has the most perfect golden opportunity with being on a struggling team and Sloot hurt...the opportunity for PT for her will never be better.

Insanely chippy game between fever snd sun. The refs completely lost control but it gave Sophie Cunningham a chance to do what she does best, earning a rejection in the closing minute by taking out the player who had earlier poked Clark in the eye

I missed the Fever-Sun game itself, but my social media was flooded last night with replays of the chippy behavior. Seems to me that after EVERY Fever game my feed is flooded with both Fever lovers and Fever haters posting videos showing Clark being viciously attacked/obviously provoking then flopping. Everyone seems to love/hate on her after every game.

I'm a little less interested in the league with each passing week, and that makes me sad. But hey, it's at least still watchable as opposed to the NBA where players are obviously fouling each other on literally every single play -- hell, nearly every single second of every game SOMEbody is fouling someone -- and it's never called. Just bulldozing in, literally shoving and holding opponents at bay, happens every play and it's apparently 100% just part of the game now. I'm not gonna watch anymore of that mess. Not that anyone cares. 😂

And a ton of respect to Sophie for backing up her teammates...

several questions on refereeing in the WNBA. the first is are the referees who do college games in the "off season?" . the answer is most likely yes.

if the referring is poor in the WNBA in what areas ?

The NBA a while ago decided not to call traveling because the dunk was so exciting and now four plus steps are not unusual. Thus the league made that decision. My question is simply does the league except/encourse or even prefer the social media obsession to a substitute to women mud-wrestling to attract viewers? Seldom do summaries of games focus on the games, reather who pushed who?

I could easily hypothesize that the type of refereeing is that desired by the league itself?

Caitlin Clark steps on a basketball court and becomes both a 3 pt savant and a raging ass hole. She is by no means a helpless, put upon victim. She baits this stuff constantly, it’s part of her game. She particularly detests poor Jacy for some reason. This is how it started:

I don’t think the face rake was intentional, Shelton isn’t that kind of player. And who knows if the eyes even got poked, Caitlin’s going to act like she got acid poured in her face. I think the extreme over dramatic reactions are part of the reason she sometimes get under called. She cries wolf a lot, arms and legs wildly flailing and head rolling.

Could see Marina getting tossed, but again it looked like a bump that CC oversold. Actually very similar to the shove CC put on Jacy in the first clip, just Jacy didn’t drop and flail.

Here’s the final word fm on high:

As for Kellie Harper’s friend Sophie, her legacy will always be as a dirty player. Imagine leaving that for your kids to find out about. We don’t need hockey type enforcers. That’s an escalation that will get someone badly hurt. What are we doing here?

I think the poor refs are doing their best to keep up with a game full of very big, very fast, very strong super athletes. Now their job is made much harder by this twisted notion that “physicality “ is an exciting addition to the game and somehow empowering to women. See the whole drama in the previous post. The pushing, the bumping, the leaning and riding inevitably spills over into confrontation and the refs have to become playground nannies , soothing temperatures and fairly handing out punishment. They shouldn’t have to add that to their duties.

No surprise, the league is decimated by injury and attrition. Most of the top players are out and there have already been a record number of concussions this year. They have to dial way, way back on allowed contact. Also stop confusing a boorish ahole for a passionate dawg.
