WNBA discussion thread?

Mystics last year also played way harder and more effectively than seemed to be possible on paper. Credit to them.

I could be wrong, but even w CC I don’t think the Fever is championship caliber.

Well that was a fun pre-season! Gotta love an OT game. Mystics have a lot of potential. I love their young roster. Citron could be rookie of the year. She played her role at ND well but she has way more to offer.
I was really impressed with the Mystics. Of all the teams who have played so far, they looked the least like a team who has only been practicing together for 4-5 days. They moved fast and their ball movement was smooth. And agreed, Citron is just a total pro. I think she'll have a great career and could certainly win ROY - she'll get lots of minutes.

Read where Caitlin Clark is odds on favorite for league MVP. Good grief it's going be a long season of back and forth of why she should and shouldn't.

My theory is league MVP should come from the team with the best overall record during regular season, doesn't matter what team wins it.

I have to disagree with you on your criteria for winning MVP. Sure, basketball is a team sport, but MVP is very much about how an individual stood out above the rest in the league. And it would be incredibly unfair if, say, the best player on the (likely terrible) Valkyries had a magical season and averaged 40 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks per game but wouldn't even be considered for it just because she had the terrible luck of being surrounded by below-average teammates.

My personal criteria is whoever has amazing stats, performs exceptionally well in big moments (never disappears), AND always passes my critical eye test. The MVP should have an unmistakable "She's HER" vibe for most of the season, regardless of whether her team wins the championship or not.

For instance, when Candace Parker was a rookie, from her first game on she was dazzling. That was 2008, and she was named both Rookie of the Year and league MVP. But Candace as a Los Angeles Spark didn't win her first WNBA championship until 2016, and that definitely was through no fault of Parker.

Agree, best record does not necessarily indicate an MVP. I think team record is a factor as are the player's stats. I also think about this question: "where would this team be if player X were not in the line-up.'

Here's a fun fact for you. The last regular season MVP that played on a losing team was Kareem Abdul- Jabbar on the Lakers in 1976 . The team record was 40-42

Winning matters to voters. Player X can average 25/10/6 but plays on a sub .500 team shouldn't be in MVP consideration .

You originally said "MVP should come from the team with the best overall record during regular season," and now you're saying the record shouldn't be sub-500.

I’ve always said they should change to Most Outstanding Player or give both an MVP and an MOP. They can be two different things. Most valuable is obviously whoever does most to get their team “furtherest”. Most Outstanding is whoever has the best stats.

I don’t have an issue with Most Outstanding Player. But in the WNBA they should have Offensive Player Of The Year and MVP, if you can’t play defense you should never be an MVP and I’ve always felt that way.

Anyone care to explain how Sydney Colson keeps making a roster year after year? Tired of seeing players like that in the W while rookies get waived year after year.

Let her go play in Europe, stop giving a roster spot to someone who is never going to contribute meaningful play.

Colton is supposedly “locker room glue”. I think everyone is getting tired of her act.

Man, Shakira Austi again. She just cannot stay well. Mystics without her and Edward’s to start the season. They’re tough but so, so thin.Thats a place rookies will have plenty of opportunities.
