wilcox is not a bad DC ...but his schemes must change to be effective in the SEC
-
his 'coverage' style of rushing 3 and 4 and playing various coverage packages is a coaches dream ...but a coach has to have a very good down front , not just kinda good , but very good. This approach is awesome against the spread , which Wilcox has been known to be successful against.
In the core of the SEC , he has to be successful against pro-style Os. We have seen Monte have extreme success against pro sets , chavis still is. It involves using various blitzes on all downs and distances , crowding the box , and pre snap movements as well as post snap movement to disguise , and play funnelling to dictate where the D is going to let the ball move to. Basically , the D must be more similar to an NFL defense as oppossed to what we saw Saturday . He is not going to be successful until he brings 5 and 6 guys from different places to pressure the QB and backfield.
Up until 1997 , the 'covereage' approach was what we took against UF. It didnt work ...we lost bad. In 98 , we man covered , crowded the box , and dictated to the offense.
