Wilcox needs to go

I agree with the field position comments, they DID play well given what they were always put in. I just hope we can get it together to stop the run before Georgia rolls into town. we have GOT to beat the bulldogs.

we open ball games with this defense. Looks like we may have lost the game films of our opponents. Yeah Wilcox is the real deal all right.

We have talent about the level of Ole Miss on Defense.. I dont see us coming anywhere close to getting blown out by Vandy

We gave up 33 points to a not very good Florida offense. Pretty frustrating if you ask me.

I will assume that we all understand football. Not all points given up can be hung on the D. Just look up the stats for UF's starting field position.

1. start 20 result TD (on D)
2. start 21 result FG (on D)
3. start on Vols 13 result FG (on special teams PB)
4.start on Vols 34 result FG (previous poss UT lost 2 yards)
5.start on Vols 47 result punt
6. start on 35 result punt
7. start on Vols 42 result TD (following Bray INT) (TD came on 4th and 1 from the 1)
8. start 20 result TD (on D)
9. start 35 result UF fumble
10. start 10 result punt
11.start 25 result FG (on D)
12. start 33 result punt
13.start 17 result EOG

4 of UF's first 7 possesions started on UT's side of the field. These 4 possesions resulted in 1 TD 2FG's and 1 punt. There are 13 points you cannot hang 100% on the D. No way the FG after the PB is on the D. If anything the D kept this game from getting very ugly very fast.

Defense was great yesterday. Besides Florida's first offensive drive and the busted play on the 83 yard TD, defense played about as good as you can.

The only thing that bothered me yesterday wasn't even personnel. It was the lack of adjusting to covering runningback screens out of the backfield.

Honestly we've had better defensive games but all in all it wasn't horrible. Rainey was their offense. Speed kills.

I agree with tvolsfan. I know it is frustrating that they scored on the first drive so easily, but it is much more promising that he was obviously able to make some good adjustments during the game. I think that it is one the more important aspect of coaching that people forget about.

There were at least 2 drives where the defense held them to 6 yards total which resulted in 2 FGs. Not the defense's fault

First drive was scripted. That was the product of an NFL coordinator. Look at the NFL, there are a lot of first drive scores.
Wilcox adjusted well. I have zero issues with the D. Im sure wrapping up will be addressed but our D played a lot better than Florida's D.

I like Chavis - not really sure why that is part of this thread though

The D looked shellshocked the first series but then responded very well and gave us a chance to get back in the game by repeatedly holding florida to field goals when being put in bad spots so I really don't understand how someone watched this game and the diagnosis was the D coordinator needed to go

our special teams were awful, some bad QB decisions (should have thrown a couple more picks honestly if florida players didnt drop easy ones) - terrible performance by the OL - this is what lost us the game - not the Defense

Considering it should have been 28-7 at the half. The offense and special teams didn't help matters at all. They had great field position pretty much all day

Look at our 2 Deep on Defense.

Brent Brewer- Baseball Player
Malik Jackson-Converted DE way to small for DT
Austin Johnson- Converted FB
Marsalious Teague- Converted WR

Johnson and Maggit- True Freshmen

And Now Compare our Backups to those of UF,LSU,ALA,UGA and so on..

We are just simply not talented enough to expect a top 10 defense. Wilcox has a great mind for defense and is doing all he can do to make us successful.

If we keep our PPG total around 20 that is pretty good for what we have on defense this year.

And from our other DTs Couch got his first SEC snaps yesterday, and he did decent...The other one is another undersized, converted DE, Miller...Combine that with the fact that we are already missing our top LB and things could have been a lot uglier than they were...People don't understand that establishing depth just takes time.

Our only serious problem is with offensive line and punt / kickoff returns.
Stone needs to cut the BS and snap the ball with his correct arm. The offensive line need to learn how to clear a gap by design so Poole knows where to go.

We need to put Devrin on returns. Marlin Lane is very shaky securing the ball and hesitant to go full speed on returns. Devrin could be like chasing a cat on the loose.

The defense is fine, but needs time to get comfortable adjusting to assignments.

Fix those and everything else works.

How many FGs did we force them to? Even with all the "speed" they have? I was actually not mad at the defense at all.. except the 83 yard pass, and the first drive. 2 big drives, but that's only 14. They forced 3? (correct if wrong) FGs in the first quarter. That could have been 21 more points.. instead of 9.

I don't think Wilcox needs to go, but I think he needs to put more onus on his linebacking core. I saw the middle LB miss key tackles in the game. Plus, those tackles most have more dog in them. I think it basically comes down to aggression and the ability to tackle.

Bad game. No running game and defense missed tackles. Wilcox'd defense looks soft........not liking the whole bend bt not break thing. Missing tackles comes down to coaching period.

Missing tackle also has alot to do with 3 coaching changes and having to start half of your starting defense as underclassmen. They need time to get some strength and get game experience. Everyone forgets this was half of our teams first "real" game. A road game against a perenicall SEC favorite. What we need now more than anything is coaching stability not more turnover. Don't you forget that is what got us in the position? Plus the defense kept us in the game for the first three quarters anybody is gonna miss tackles when they are on the field as long as the defense was yesterday. Blaming the wrong person.

This is a team, all 3 phases needs to be in sync. It appears that after a shaky start D picked it up. But offense, especially the running game, is not going to cut it. Special Teams needs to be more explosive, better run back, blocking kicks etc.

For me, I'll take this loss as a building block. Our young players now know what it's like to be in the SEC and hopefully with this they can begin turning that corner that we all want them to turn.

Florida's 3-7: 5 drives, 21 plays, 69 yards, 13 points. Those drives result in 0 points if they have bad field position. The problem is our linebackers and secondary are young and slow.
