Why the pessimism?

Yeah, I've played 10-15 different organized sports in my life, at a wide variety of levels.

Are you?

EDIT: dang, now you got me curious, have to count them up to be sure I didn't misrepresent: baseball, football, basketball, gymnastics, track, cross country, water polo, lacrosse, orienteering, swimming, volleyball, 2-man beach volleyball, ultimate frisbee, downhill skiing, marathon & distance running, triathlons, soccer. So 17. I was close.

Those are the organized ones, from pop warner to adult leagues. Also goofed around with friends with hockey, water skiing, scuba diving and cross country skiing, but nothing organized. I was a paratrooper, too, but what we did wasn't a sport, nothing like skydiving.

I have a little familiarity. You?

adversity is adversity. Michigan and GT presented different types, and i'm not saying one is better/worse, but once you're there, you're there.....at that point, the only thing that matters is how you handle it.

I gotta be honest, I've only seen two in game coaching decisions that I haven't liked so far and one of them might have been on purpose. I think we should've gone for 2 in the first overtime with gt. And lining up a yard off the ball still boggles my mind. The yard off, maybe is something that could lead to success? So, in hindsight, pretty good year so far. If we play sound football against uf, we should win.

Why is it that every year, there is so much doubt? Let's get real guys:

-Sure, we allowed an ungodly amount of yards on defense against Georgia Tech but who doesn't? Hell, even the "almighty" Jawja does almost every year. Our defense is going to be fine and is going to win us some games.

-Why is everyone afraid of Georgia again? They aren't that good, Kirby won't last. They just beat a highly overrated Notre Dame team and everyone is scared. That's a load of crap, we will roll them in Knoxville.

-Florida scored 3 points on offense against Michigan, we will beat Florida by at least 3 touchdowns. Their defense isn't crap neither, Speight threw those interceptions in terrible coverage, Dormady will adjust and have a career day.

-We will play in Atlanta in December, this team isn't a nightmare as some of you make it out to be.

Love your enthusiasm!! I really do. But beating FL by 3 touchdowns in Gainesville?

Two things:

I hope your right!
Are you willing to give me 21 points? Cause I got a 401k sitting here that needs a boost.

Setting your corners 10 yds off the line on 3rd and 6?

adversity v GT is not the same as adversity v Michigan

Are you familiar with sports of any kind?

Like others have said, adversity is adversity. Who against and how you found yourself there are for other discussions, my point had to do with how the two teams reacted once landing in what appeared to be a "no win" type situation.

One team seemed to come alive at that moment while the other kind of shrank.

But no, i didnt know there was a difference in Mich and GA Tech. Thanks for the sports lesson. This is my 1st season watching oblong throwball. 😊

It's a defense mechanism for those afraid of failure. I hate being disappointed (looking at those S.Car and Vandy games) just like everyone else, but I will always believe we can win on any Saturday. Especially this Saturday.

Gators' O looks horrible this year. They may get a touchdown from good field position thanks to their D. 24-7 Vols, Kelly with two rushing TDs.

I am with you about believing we can win on any Saturday, you know why? Because we have, I have witnessed us do it.

We were down for sometime and began expecting to loose. Butch comes in and recruits great players, so we get excited but our team doesn't live up to expectations. Talented players aren't developing as expected. Butch brings in better coaches and fans expect to see results. We then see GT run rampant through what should be a solid D. After being conditioned to expect failure we will continue to expect failure until we see otherwise. It is a normal self protection response.

Should Charlie Brown expect Lucy to hold the ball?

Is seemed Butch made very good hires with Shoop, Hoke, and Warren. I thought we would see improvement in game 1, but haven't seen it yet. You have to think if Butch keeps changing DCs eventually he finds a gem. Is this the year?

This has to be the dumbest, weakest idea ive ever heard. Never once have i rooted for the vols to lose and ive only seen one poster that has.
Show me a post during the GT game where i c"cued up a pitchfork."

Its a noble thing you do, blindly following a coach that is wasting tons of talent. I guess it puts you on some moral highground. It kind of reminds me of current politics when they politicians have no valid argument for the facts presented so they scream racism.

Keep up the good work and good luck defending a coaching staff that allows over 600 yards per game when the inevitable happens, assuming of course it continues.
No the dumbest arguments were the ones you made yesterday, like nails in coffins, injures/soft, etc. Just saying.

I have never thought of orienteering as a sport, I guess so.

Yeah, the point being our defense is bad and to me appears to pick up where it left of last year, which is why i use the last 6 game. Simply put, to be competative in the sec our d has to improve. Im not sure Florida is a good gauge because we dont know how bad the o is. But if we dominate them, that will be a good indocator. We should now for sure in a month.
Were you not arguing against selective stats the other day in regard to 17-4 or was that someone else?

You guys were gearing up with your pitchforks in the middle of the GT game and then we won. It made a lot of negs very mad that we won and you've been angry ever since because CBJ keeps finding ways to win ..... or keep his job (how you see it).

You guys want them gone so bad you're rooting for the coaches to prove you right on an internet chat board so you look smart. Thus you say you are fans but in reality you care about your ecred and agenda more.

Spin how you want but if we lose you will have the best week of your life posting all over VN. If we win then you have to spin everyone's words and keep pushing your agenda.

You can fools others but I know way too many people like you.

lol he wont even be watching the Vols game -- he will be watching this --- https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/m...-atlanta-united-fc-vs-orlando-city-sc/preview

Actually, no not everyone does.
In 2016, GT only went over 600 years once (Duke)
In 2015, GT closest game to 600 is 571 Tulane
In 2014, GT went over 600 twice (UNC and Pitt)

You have to go back to 2012 to find a team that gave up more yards than Tennessee, Presbyterian 712.

Sure everyone is glad we pulled out the win, but that coupled with how bad our defense was in 2016 and its simply not sustainable in the sec. It will catch up to us sooner or later.

As for the rest of the stuff you said, same could be said the last two season and we see the result. And thus alot of people have no confidence in CBJ to get it done.

It seems the only confidence I ever see on here from you is being confidently negative...even with the positives.

BTW.....I can't tell any of you how many times I've watched a favored team PRO or College that has been getting humiliated for a whole game.....then suddenly out of no where pulls out a victory when they have no business still being in the game....and the "Expert Analyst" will say that is what great teams or championship teams do....always find a way to win.

Only at Tennessee when a young team flat out gets on it with that much limited time and puts up 42 point in 18 minutes and 2 OT possessions....it is still not respected by a lot on here....focus is all on the negative.

This is the truth. The Anti-Butch crowd want what they want....failure. The fact that Butch does one thing great....makes his players believe and fight for 60 minutes....his players press when most quit. That is one of the hardest things to coach of all.

I can you every single game since Shoop arrived as proof that our defense is not good.

And to the point of the record in the last 21 games, sure its a valid stat. Its also meaningless.

There are a million coaching decisions made for each game and many changes made during a game. When you play a team like tech normal goes out the window. I won't evaluate the coaches based on player alignment when I don't know what they are trying to do. I have to evaluate them on results.

Corners ligned up 10 yards off on 3rd and 6 doesn't bother me. Corners can close that space before the QB can throw the ball. Corner can be at the reception point before the receivers. Corner can be moving down hill on the tackle.

Same with the D line 1-2 yards off the ball. I have seen it done before and worked fine. Back in the 3 yards and a cloud of dust days it was normal. Look at Oklahoma Nebraska 1971 and you'll see Oklahoma ligned up a good yard off the ball.

There is positive when warranted. Useless argument because people will only see what they want

Nah, if you read VFB's post in Fade's thread, he explained how he's really supportive and everybody just paints him as negative.
Of course he's rattled off about 50 bashing and Eeyore posts since then. Maybe he should go back and post again, letting everybody know it's not him, it's everyone else. :)

Lol. I got it. Negative selective stats prove the obvious; positive ones are meaningless.

I agree our defense isn’t good but you sure do seem to contradict yourself a lot.

I feel Spurrier at work here. I think he told Mac to act as pessimistic and beaten down as possible during the press conference. Spurrier is a master at gaining the psychological advantage.

Exactly. He thinks he gets a bad rap despite finding the negative angle in absolutely everything he posts.

To borrow a page from his playbook earlier by using racism as an example. If you have to continually explain why you aren’t racist. You probably are.

What does the stat prove, really? Would be favored to beat any team that surrounded us? Would we even be competative?
Someone made a comment about the tallest midget in the room earlier. Pretty good comparison.
