Why the pessimism?

For an actual 440 yard improvement you have to assume parity in the opponents in game 1 and 2; in reality that's not the case.

That was for fun, Bearded. You must work on recognizing a tongue-in-cheek comment. Don't worry, I'm not building a doctoral dissertation off it. :)

Only valid point is, stats (in either direction) can be misleading.

We'll know how we do against Florida Saturday. Before then, there's just a lot of guessing, even when stats are involved.

Why is it that every year, there is so much doubt? Let's get real guys:

-Sure, we allowed an ungodly amount of yards on defense against Georgia Tech but who doesn't? Hell, even the "almighty" Jawja does almost every year. Our defense is going to be fine and is going to win us some games.

-Why is everyone afraid of Georgia again? They aren't that good, Kirby won't last. They just beat a highly overrated Notre Dame team and everyone is scared. That's a load of crap, we will roll them in Knoxville.

-Florida scored 3 points on offense against Michigan, we will beat Florida by at least 3 touchdowns. Their defense isn't crap neither, Speight threw those interceptions in terrible coverage, Dormady will adjust and have a career day.

-We will play in Atlanta in December, this team isn't a nightmare as some of you make it out to be.

Wow, you have totally changed my outlook!

The answer to your question of who doesn't give up ungodly amounts of yards to Ga Tech.....Jacksonville State. 344 total and the QB that rushed all over us ran for 25 total yards.

I think we will torch UF. Michigan are not world beaters. Gators were exposed. Only way my expectation on this one changes is if suspensions are lifted before KO.

It's the NegaVol theme song. It's running particularly loud through their heads this week. Dunno why.

Et tu, JP?

You know why there's some pessimism here. Primarily, The defense, you know that, and it's a legit concern. There are a lot of questions still unanswered about the OL, how is our new qb gonna handle his 3rd start playing in Gainesville, our dismal history in Gainesville, Butch's less than stellar track record making decisions on gameday.

There are also reasons for optimism. We're 2-0 and found a way to win vs GT despite the aforementioned defense, John Kelly is a beast, Callaway has established himself as the new #1 very quickly, our special teams are very good, we're a very experienced club that broke through and beat Florida last year, Florida's dismal performance vs Michigan, Florida's lack of offense, Florida's qb situation, Florida's suspended players and the Florida's unusual week of preparation after missing a much-needed cupcake game due to the hurricane....and then the effects of the hurricane itself.

I see both sides and I think there's little to no reason why we shouldn't win. But there are also certainly legitimate concerns and issues worth discussing in this forum without dismissing those who bring them up and then branding the posters who do so with some ridiculous label.

I think the realistic fan base looks at the coach we have and knows any given Saturday he can snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory.

When you are 0-3 against muschump.
2-2 against Vandy.
When you blow huge 4th quarter leads and lose games.
Your defense is giving up Sal Senseri type numbers.
When you pi$$ away 2 SEC East Championships.
When every press conference Is full of excuses and cliches.

Its very hard for a fan base who supports the University of Tennessee to have confidence. I think we have a section of people that are fans of our football team and a section who are coach fans and this is were the disconnect is.

But in spite of the coach we have, I think we win. I think we make just enough big plays in the passing game and our run game controls the ball. I don't think Florida will have enough offense to take advantage of our very bad defense. Florida will be without the 2 biggest offensive threats on their roster and their QB situation is horrendous.

With all the said, the man on our sidelines has lost to worse teams, so anything is possible on any given Saturday.

Realistic fanatic..is that an oxymoron?

If you look at the numbers as 'with Kirkland' and 'without Kirkland'..........it is a huge disparity.

This week, we are "without Kirkland" and therefore I'm not too confident.

However.........I hope the Vols prove me wrong!

So our hopes of a good season hinges on one player? Thats interesting.

Kirkland played in several games last year, the d was never really good.

See, KB, I read your (very well reasoned and balanced) response, and I see nothing like the "nightmare" of doubt and pessimism questioned by the OP.

I appreciate your post. And absolutely would not include you in those about whom I was speaking when you quoted me. :)

Seems like there is a panic happening behind the scenes and for good reason. This is not a normal game. There is a lot of young people who have no idea what they are about to step in. Not just on this team. This is the first real dirty game for many students and fans. This is a low down dirty filthy game. Anything can, and does happen. It will not go as expected. That is where the caution comes from. Football in the south is a filthy corrupt tough sport. A lot of young people are about to find that out.

That being said. Good teams grow and change and get BETTER as the season goes. This team wins this game and you will be looking at a turning point in this season. Everything opens up. I think Tennessee WAKES UP during this game. I don't think we have seen the best of them yet. We have depth getting better. There will be players on this team with family in the stands. Tennessee wins.

Go for it. Doesn't bother me. But pulling stats farther back than 2013 is bs and you know it whether you want to acknowledge it or not.

No it's not. Your take (and condescension) is short sighted imo.

Not sure how long you've been watching TN-Uf football games. I've been watching since 1976....7-24 since then vs a supposed rival of equals. During that time period, we have one 2-game win streak and five single game "streaks". Florida has a 4 game streak, a 5 game streak, a 2 game streak and, of course, an 11 game win streak since then.

It hasn't mattered what the circumstances were, who the coaches were, who the players were, or what the fan base thought ...Florida has dominated. So that's why people, why older lifelong fans go further in referencing the history of the series, because we've lived the disappointment and agony time and time again, game after game, year after year, decade after decade.

Last year's win was incredible, it was glorious....but it was also extremely rare. For a lot of us old-timers, it's just gonna take more than 1 win in 12 years to erase or "flush" the Gator dominance in this series....it just is, but a win on Saturday and the first 2-game win streak vs Florida since 2003-2004, will go a long way towards changing the mindset.

I like our chances reguardless of the questions surrounding the coach/defense.

Both UT and UF were thrown into the fire week 1. One team rose up and did what they had to including blocking a chip shot FG and stopping a team from getting an ez 3 yards when the opposition had been getting 7 yards at will.

The other, sank like a rock!

Itll be a down and dirty fight down in the swamp for 2 teams that neither can afford a loss. Both will fight with all they have. If theres one thing i can rely on with Butch's teams, theyll fight till the clock hits 00:00. UF, sometimes they do, sometimes, meh.

Im optimistic about it. Go Vols! WGWTFA!!!

Its weird to think that Florida views us the way we view Kentucky or Vandy....well Vandy before the last 5 years.

Because we have seen our defense play in the last 7 games or so and it sucks. If we had just an average defense, I would be very upbeat but I have seen enough of them to know that they can't stop anyone with a pulse on offense. Nothing so far this year has led me to believe it will change on Saturday.

In the past 25 years or so, there have been so many times when it seemed, at least on paper and in this forum, when we have had an equal or better team, only to go in and shart the bed. We have made their bad quarterbacks look like Tom Brady. We have made their pedestrian RB's look like Heisman winners. I can still see their player a couple years ago running down the sidelines about 70 yards to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

When you add in a very Sunsieri-like defense on top of that it lends itself to a sort of PTSD. That's where the trepidation comes in.

Exactly. What I have witnessed on the field makes me believe that our only option to win is going to be to over power the other team with offense.

I thought Shoop was the hire to take us to the next level, turns out that was the next floor down.

Makes you almost misty-eyed for the 3rd and Chavis days

umm, we lost to vandy dude, and usc. we're worse than that team that lost those games. we've beaten uf what once in 12 years? we pulled the gt game out of our ass. we were supposed to win the sece last year (see first sentence of my post). i'm asking myself, why is anyone optimistic about beating fl's talent in the swamp. we lose by a lot. it's gym coach's last year on the hill. bet the house on it.

Don't know what you're laughing about; he's right.

Both teams faced significant challenges the first week. Both stared down a scoreboard that was tilted against them.

And only one team came out stronger.

 that's another reason you should be optimistic. we know we can overcome adversity...we did it.

I think we have the talent on the field to compete with anyone in the country. The talent on the sidelines however has be worried.
