Why the Cheap Shots in the Outback Bowl?

I bet they weren't complaining when Ron Dayne was there plowing over people. If the silver-spooned pansy didn't want to get hit than he needs to learn the basic idea of sliding or throwing the ball away. I didn't see one helmet to helmet hit. They looked like that in real time but the replay would show the truth. Berry knocked the hell out of him with his shoulder not his helmet.

If the announcers hadn't mentioned the WI coach's crying about it, everybody would have been about what physical, hard-hitting players UT has.

WI's QB is a Pete Sampras. If you constantly pretend to be hurt, everybody thinks you're great for playing hurt.

Am I the only one who thought the Vols had some dirty hits in the bowl game? It seemed like they were intent on delivering shots to the head and/or late hits, especially to the other QB. I'm all for aggressive play, but that was too much. The academic suspensions were embarrassing enough: you don't needs play like that to raise additional "character" issues about the program on a national stage.

The hits were hard and physical but legal this is SEC football.

There was one cheap shot.....Mapu throwing the arm to Donovan. And we got called on it. The reason they all could have been construed as cheap shots was simply because Donovan did not put himself in good positions and he got drilled.....hard. Going head first into the endzone, and "sliding" if you want to call it that, and waiting until the last second to throw the ball away. And he got hit hard. All I can say is that green "no hit" jerseys are for Spring games, practices, and South Bend.

Welcome to SEC football. Delivering crushing blows is just our way of saying "Hi - How ya doin? - My name is Eric!"

I wish we had played that 'physical' against AL, CA and FL and LSU. No one wants to see other players hurt but our team has to play with enthusiasm.

We did play that physical with LSU. Until that SECCG, I had not seen our Defense play with as much intensity and hit as hard since 2005.

I agree. I hope this trend continues.

Remember a dude named AL WILSON? Al played with that intensity every play of every game. If only the Vols played that way now.

If the refs had thrown a flag on Berry wouldn't it have just been declined in favor of the TD. Maybe they assess it on kickoff but then they kick it through the endzone. Either way there would have been no harm done to UT.

I thought helmet to helmet was an entitlement to qb in the pocket or scrambling. When they run they should be free game. Other than the long reviews the refs stayed out of the way which is how it should be.

I thought Mayo played a lot like Al Wilson and have posted such on other threads. I very much like the way Berry played and our overall defensive play the last two games...again hit hard, hit fair, don't woof, and take no names...I think that summarizes Wilson, Mayo, Berry, Reggie, Kiner, etc. GO VOLS:rock:

I smell a troll. Only a Wussconsin fan would ask this dumb question. As someone already started to say. “If you can’t play with the big dogs, stay on the porch with the pups.”

As pointed out already:

1. Eric Berry led with his shoulder - watch the replay and you'll see his shoulder makes first contact. Further, watch EB throughout the game an you'll see a similar style - leading with shoulder. Nothing wrong with that hit.

2. The QB's indecision to slide created the problem on the later hit. The LB was aiming at his mid-section when he tried that awkward slide. Again, nothing wrong with that hit.

1a and 2a: Even if there were helmet to helmet on those 2 plays, it would not be considered intentional or "dirty play". They were results of the QB's moves.

3. The "dirty hit" was correctly called when our line man through an arm at the QB. That's the only one I saw that was a problem. Even the late hit on the final drive wasn't dirty - it was typical play in college football everywhere.

Ok, I'll be the first to offer....I've got 5 bucks to chip in to donate you a box of man-pons since apparently you and your coach are fresh out! :cray:

I smell one of your own trying to look like a troll.

None of the hits were dirty. Some looked like helmet to helmet from the initial angle at full speed, but upon replay, I think the only one capable of get called was the psuedo-slide, but even that not really.

The late hit wasn't dirty, but it should have been called. It's supposed to be called regardless of intent.

I bet you "worked like heck" to think up this brilliant first post. Way to go Ace.

Berry hits like a missile, but all his hits were legal. He leads with his shoulder. I can't wait to watch him next year. He will be the complete package at safety.

I don't know how they list him, but watching it live that quarterback looks somewhere around 5'0" 130lbs. He is a small, gritty guy whom they could not protect and who could not outrun guys who were much, much bigger than him. It was actually starting to get ugly in the first half right before we knocked him out.

I'll give the kid credit; he is gutsy. But when you start a little guy back there and don't protect him, you are going to get him hurt. It was impressive to me that he finished the game.

MAYBE we just aren't used to seeing that kind of playing this season....and MAYBE if every game was played like that, we'd be looking at an even better record. MAYBE that's what TN football used to look like. If it were me, I'd be putting some of the blame on the O-line at WISC..not all, but some

if you look at the hit going out of bounds in the 4th qtr

the DB is pulling up, and really slides off of Beckum, it wasn't really a hit, he was pulling up
