Why not Mike Leach?

7.6-5 at 2 schools that ranked #30 (.565) and #86 (.418) from 1965-2015...meaning he out performed both their histories with his career .603. We were #13 @.680.

If we can't get Gruden, I'd like to see what Leach could do with our facilities and history.

Could you see Leach competing with Smart, Saban and who ever FL brings in......every year?

Leach has had one season of better than 9 wins in his 15 year career. He has also had 5 seasons of 7 or fewer wins.

Sure he has been at TTU and WSU........but he has also played those schedules and not an SEC schedule.

The thought of beating Saban with Mike Leach and him discussing his Alien abduction in the post game presser tickles me. He can’t be any worse than what we have been dealing with and would be a great deal more entertaining.

Not sure an sec schedule means much anymore. There are two great teams in the sec, maybe 3 good teams and a bunch of absolute garbage teams after that. So, an sec schedule really isn't anything to brag about anymore.

I don't think that there's a developer of offensive talent anywhere in America better than Leach.
I also don't think there's a coach anywhere whose teams overachieve more than Leach.

I would say that my chief concern with Leach, and I've followed him for a very long time, attending TTU games and following the Tech program, is that his teams always have at least one inexplicable underperformance game. See the WSU-Cal game this season.

We could do far far worse than Leach though. Don't confuse his quirkiness with inattention to detail or running a loose program.
His players are very well coached and disciplined

I have brought Leach up numerous times and usually get slammed for it. You are right though, the guy can coach and he does run an enjoyable offense. He wins big, for where he is, as well.

At this point, I'd take just about anyone other than another year of butch. Hell...I'm warming up to the thought of kiffin again. Yeah I'm that sick of this program right now.

Washington State multiple losses to FCS schools during Leach's tenure. They lost to Eastern Washington last year and Portland State the year before. Earlier this year, they were absolutely demolished by Cal and recently lost to Arizona by 21. The argument that Leach has performed well given where he's coached has some validity, but he isn't some world beater. He doesn't get us where we want to be. I suspect that a Leach coached Tennessee team would look awfully similar to our 2016 team.

I suggested him on Twitter a couple of weeks ago and he actually liked it.

Surprised me...could you imagine the outrage if Mullen or any other coach liked a tweet promoting them at another school?

As tvols said above, when you hire Mike Leach, you marry yourself to that offensive system, and by extension, to a certain style of defense. If he goes, you either face a 4 year rebuild or you go out and get another guy that runs the air raid, and there aren't many of those guys who are successful. It's not an easy offense to break tempo with and you end up with a gassed defense or a defense that can't match up physically. I don't understand why people think this is a good idea, other than the fact that they believe Tennessee is a third tier football program that should be lucky to go 8-4. Mike Leach is a thing because of incompetent coaching at schools like Texas and USC. Call me when he beats an elite coach at an elite school.

...soon.

The fact the he liked that proves he really is as crazy as a coconut.

Sure do love the guy, but he'd be a terrible fit for Knoxville. Then again, so was Dooley. And Butch. And Kiffin.

I can counter every point you made and I don’t understand why people don’t think it is a good idea.

That said, who do you want?

2016 Tennessee 23, WSU 34
2015 SOS Tennessee 12, WSU 42
2014 Tennessee 24, WSU 34
Ect

Consistently the SEC plays the toughest schedules. Most years there are many more SEC schools in the top 20 of SOS than any other conference.

People say all the time that the sec is down; however they still beat a lot of teams in bowl games. Usually the FL, the GA the MSU Ect are much better than othe conferences middle teams. Last year Tennessee played the B10 W #2 team and beat them soundly.

Sure the sec doesn't have 5 of the best teams in the country but you would still be hard to find others better top to bottom every year.

FWIW, that Eastern Washington team was loaded. I believe they had 4 of 11 offensive starters drafted

You make some damn good points here, although I'll add that he has beaten an elite coach at an elite school.
Mack Brown won a national championship and Texas is an elite program.
They were ranked #1 when Leach beat them

Can we all just leave Leach alone and keep him at my Wazzu?

Thanks

You guys are extremely fortunate.
My wife went to Texas Tech and she's furious to this day over Leach's firing. I'd say 95%+ of Tech fans share her sentiments.
The 2 main individuals responsible for it are no longer at TTU and they're pretty hated among fans.
Craig James literally was run out of the Senate primary here because of it.
