If you want mediocre then sure hire him. 118-77 as a HC, 33-34 at WSU. Can't get allured by a coach having 1 good season in his career. Also go look at the ranks of his offenses, consistently in the 40's-50's, no guru. He is pass first and that doesn't win championships which is reflected by the fact he doesn't have any
I don't think he's the right choice but it's not easy to have championships at Texas Tech or Wash St.
true as far as his win pct. goes, but look at his trajectory at TT before he was unjustly fired and look at his tracectory at wash st as I type this.Leach is a .605 all time coach.
AT TT = .661
At Washington = .500
In 16 years as HC he only managed 1 season better than 9 wins, he has had 3 losing seasons, and 9 5 loss or worse seasons (9 of 16)..........He hasn't lead a team to a final ranking of any kind on 7 years.
NONE of that exudes confidence in what we should be looking for from the next HC at Tennessee.
His name is much bigger than his career. I think too many people simply hear the name and think his teams/career was much better than it really is.
I don't get the fascination with guys that have a history of awful defenses. Chip Kelly, Mile Leach.....nuh-uh.

Chip Kelly is not coming here for anything south of the 6mil range I believe, and TN is not going to shell out that kind of moneyWhere do you get your info? (leach yea not so much...Chip??)
Chips teams averaged giving up (for his career) 21 PPG, in an offense heavy conference at the time (while scoring 45+ per game)
Was Chip's D's elite....well no but they were WAY better than most of you give him credit for. Also look at the teams who have been doing great over the past several years.........they score (the last 4 NC games have been score fests......not much D).
And here come the people that say that doesnt matter. Same thing goes for Mullen at Miss State in terms of resources and recruiting.
According to some, a good coach should be able to compete for league titles at Army or Navy.
You can always use a subjective, small sample size to support a specious argument. Wanna tell me that Leach has been a defensive guru over the past 5 years?
Debord's offense was record breaking too, but people couldn't stop griping and moanin about that either. Unless we hire Saban most of you guys will disrespect UT anyway.
yes and Leach is a proven offensive commodity . That is why you hire a proven D.C. To compliment him
Well since you're going to bring Navy up, they played for their league title last year, and are in good shape to do the same this year. So yes, Coach Niumatalolo is a GREAT coach and has his team playing for league titles.
This is what irritates me when people bring up the defenses under coaches like Leach. At these smaller programs like Tech and Wazzu, the resources to go out and get big-time DCs just weren't there. And if they do have a DC put up a great season, he won't be there long.
You aren't paying a DC $1M/yr at Wazzu.

Please tell me what national titles Navy is competing for. You know what I meant. According to some, great coaches should be able to compete for national titles regardless of what program they are at.
i'll give you that the numbers are similar, except that Leach has a MAJOR CONFERENCE divisonal title and coach of the year under his belt. I also challenge you to give it the old eye test. You telling me that Butch Jones is fielding anything that remotely resembles Washington st right now?I'' give you his trajectory:
At TT: 7-6, 7-5, 9-5, 8-5, 8-4, 9-3, 8-5, 9-4, 11-2, 8-4
Looks a lot like Butch Jones.......One real good season does not a make real good coach.
Does the body of work look good (for who they are) sure, but that is exactly why people want Butch fired.........they want much more.......and nothing says Leach can get you there.
WS: 3-9, 6-7, 3-9, 9-4, 8-5
Last year WS started 8-2.....finished 8-5
In 13 they started 3-1 and finished 6-7
In 12 they started 2-1, finished 3-9
This one season should not tell us ANYTHING. If Leach could keep this type of year going for a few then maybe you got something.
