Why Do We Still Not Know A QB? Concerning.

I am not concerned. Usually most teams don't tell their QB in public until before kickoff as a strategy to avoid tipping their hat.

I am more concerned about UT's defense than offense.

For starters, I am usually optimistic and still am.

CJH said this morning that “they will announce a starter when they feel like they’ve (QB) earned it.

Why does UT never announce a QB until 10 mins before kickoff? It seems like we are the only team in CFB who never has a clear cut starter.
It never turns out good when we play this game. What is the secret? Are all 3 not that great and you’re just picking at this point? Concerning that at least 1 of the bunch hasn’t stood out.

I hope I am wrong, but it is never good when you don't know who is leading your team, 10 days before kickoff.

The things people worry about 😩

The big question is will he be starting VS Pitt? He has been pegged as the greatest thing since sliced bread here by VN and the drive-by fans. It's a lot like people saying the team will go 6-6 in Spring and as practice and season gets closer they've got them winning 10. Milton came in losing his job at Michigan and saw writing on the wall for 2021. He came here and went from big-armed QB that would be in a battle to Superman. So naming him starter weeks before the game just adds pressure. It's a bigger fall the more expectations are exacerbated.
Every season the hype junkies get fired up talking about us winning games we have no chance at. Milton is not going to be the savior of Tennessee football and neither are the other 2, but the coaches clearly have made up their mind that Milton will be the QB going forward. I'm not even saying he is even the best of the 3...i'm just saying, if you want to worry about something involving UT football, there are PLENTY of places to start other than the starting QB not being named yet.

If an SEC QB is going to be spooked or wilt from the pressure of being named QB in the pre-season...... I dunno what to say. What's going to happen when the season starts.

If Heupel HAS picked the wrong QB for Bowling Green, may God have mercy on our souls for the next few years.

I don't get the apologies for this coach for not naming a starter. This isn't pee wee football. Is there another SEC school that hasn't named a starter yet? I've not looked but I kinda doubt the good programs are dilly dallying about their pick.

I suspect he's just trying to keep Bailey outta the portal and that's fine but in the end, but I dislike dancing around a player's feelings. Coach Heupel can run it his way but I'd tell Bailey, like he did Maurer, "This is how I see it. This is your role with the team." and let him decide his future.

I'm not concerned. It seems that although they haven't publicly named a QB depth chart, they've started adjusting reps more towards their guy. It doesn't matter if I know who the QB1 is as long as CJH and company know.

We knew who the starter was the last two years and .....well some of yall were equally distraught

We couldn't believe they kept trotting the same $#@t show out there week after week. They'd seen 3 years of failure so starting the failure somehow just didn't seem like something an actual competitive coach would do. Turns out, Pruitt was not a very competitive coach.

Really? Which fans? I've seen many excited about Milton's potential but pretty much all of them have apprehension because of his past.

You write like a fan of a certain other QB. His fan club really does act as if he's the next greatest thing... and think he's the second coming of Manning. They're typically the ones emotionally vested in one guy and offended that he may not be "the guy".

And he restarts at UT. He got a clean slate. Some guys transfer and do no better... and some win Heisman Trophies. We don't know what Milton will be but it is a very good sign that he appears to have beaten out Bailey who has a ton of QB skill and Hooker who has started and played at a P-5 competitive level.

He came here and went from big-armed QB that would be in a battle to Superman. So naming him starter weeks before the game just adds pressure. It's a bigger fall the more expectations are exacerbated.
Why? If you were in competition for a promotion would it relieve or add pressure when you were told that you had gotten it? Maybe a different kind of pressure but a lot of confidence too if your mind is right and your mental approach is good.

Heupel will do what he can to A. not screw up any relationships with Georgia high school staffs by benching one of their five stars and B. do what he can to string Bailey along as much as possible because Bailey can't beat him riding the pine at UT. Bailey can beat him playing for another SEC school for instance.

In the end, all of us here on VN have been passed on the depth chart at some point if we played or simply not been selected to play at the next level, it is a reality not always based on talent but upon situation and the team needs.

Sure, I don't want to see Bailey at an SEC school but I don't want to see a coach who is beholding to the worry the players will transfer nearby.

I believe in Heupel and his coaching ability but he's the new guy and I'm observing, as best I can, how he handles players (It's okay to smile, ya know) and situations.

I don’t think there’s much advantage to announcing it. Much more advantage to keep it quiet.

I dont think we are fooling our competition at all. The longer we wait the more the opposing defense knows they can pin their ears back and lick their chops because if you have four quarterbacks, you dont have one and they know that.

Probably shouldn't announce a starting qb until the day before the Pitt game.

Give all 3 a chance for another week, rotating qb's against BG.

If Coach has confidence in Milton and Hooker, maybe he should start Bailey until the Pitt game. Then start Milton or Hooker.

What do you think the hold up is?

Well.., it's some nutcase armed with a Mauser Luger demanding Heupel's promise to surrender his future NC trophy. The guy figures to save travel time and cost, and get it before another robber. Probably figures he has a great game plan, but it's messing up some fans minds about our current game one starter.

Why does it matter? This isn't a video game where you get stat boosts for being named the starter. If they have a starter, the team already knows, and us knowing doesn't change anything.

I'll toss out possible reasons. If you name QB1, the natural follow-up question is who is #2. He may not want to answer that for 2 reasons:

The battle for QB2 may be tight. He may genuinely want to keep evaluating them before deciding. The competition may be helping his QB room progress.

If Bailey is QB3, he's at risk to hit the portal. Heupel would rather have him here than in the portal before Tayven Jackson gets here just for depth.

Attached to reason 2, Heupel might wisely duck the QB2/QB3 question with "Joe will be our starter and either or both of the other QBs could come in as needed....." or something like that.
It is also possible that, since Hooker and HB have different games and styles, opponent team might call for different style of offenses to be played against them.

Pin their ears back? That makes zero sense.

Main advantage is keeping QBs competitive. Bottom line. Zero advantage to announcing it
