Actually, Illinois accused Pearl of wrongdoing in his recruitment of Deon Thomas. Also, his peers almost universally consider Bruce slime.

Was there any NCAA investigation into whether Pearl was in the wrong? No. It was simply a matter of Illinois being pissy because someone caught them handing out free Chevy Blazers like there was no tomorrow and tried to turn the table on him.

They do whatever they can just to get a kid from the city to get their foot in the door. I'm not doing that to kids."


This is a clear shot at Pearl when it was completely uncalled for. Not only did Prince contact Pearl, he reviewed the situation for 2 weeks, and clearly, he has premeditated sticking this into the interview, and was waiting for a question that had the slightest bit of relevancy to Prince. Cal demands that Memphis should get more respect, but at the same time claims that UT doesn't even belong in the same league as Memphis. I gurantee that if there was more talent in East Tennessee, Cal would be more than getting his foot in the door. He may have "integrity" in that he stops just short of lying in every statement he makes, but he puts enough spin in every sentence to make the earth orbit the sun. Yeah ok you may disagree with Pearl's moral fiber (I question it myself sometimes), but Cal is a straight up jerk.

Cal's comments about Prince and Pearl's Memphis fetish are absolutely correct. Just because it's harsh doesn't make it less accurate.

I don't think anything is wrong with this. Pearl knows how much talent comes out of Memphis each year and he needs to start a pipeline somehow. I'd actually be discouraged if our coach wasn't aggressive trying to get someone from Memphis.

Unless you understand a situation enough to know that in some situations there isn't a right or a wrong, and if you truly believe there is only right and wrong, we as human-beings do not possess the knowledge or perspective to determine right and wrong every time. Pearl has paid his time for the Deon Thomas incident, but other than that I haven't heard one thing about him being unethical with recruits. If you have a link, please share.

In the interview Cal was purposely ignoring the fact that Memphis cannot compete with UNC and Duke in academics and you know it. Do you really think everytime Leslie McDonald asks Cal about Memphis architecture program, he is "accurate" with him? Of course not, he'd rather talk about why the other schools should stay out of his turf. Welcome to Cal-town home of the city of Memphis.

That's the fallacy of the entire discussion. Cal doesn't need to recruit Memphis. He's big enough that he can get players from wherever he wants.

In that case, what's so wrong about Pearl recruiting players from Memphis? Fact is that Cal accused Pearl of taking Prince solely to gain some ground in Cal-town, while Prince is the one that contacted UT because he wanted to come home, wasn't interested in Memphis, and Vandy couldn't take him. Meanwhile, Prince is having a heck of a lot more success here than he was ever going to at Arizona, and finding a legitimate role on the team.

You don't have to name sources, but I'd appreciate knowing the "gray" areas that Bruce is willing to wade into to land a recruit.

E.g. does he spread false innuendo about other coaches and their programs?

I guess since he was never going to play at Arizona, yes, he's having more success here, but he hasn't had much success and he hasn't found a legitimate role on the team at Tennessee.
