Who Do We Go After from the portal?

They weren't asking for 4 million. Nico is NOT worth that yet. They also weren't calling numerous HC's fishing for interest.
They also showed up to practice. I have no problems with guys wanting more money as long as they actually do what they’re supposed to do.

Hoping for a blue-collar guy. Basically, the opposite of Nico. Give me Haynes King or Kyle Walljasper.
I don’t think King would leave Tech and I respect that but I’d love to have him. Not a great passer but is a deadly runner he tore Georgia up on the road. Wouldn’t be a bad 1 year option at all.

I was looking at the kid, Byrum Brown, at USF.

People might bristle at stealing from Golesh but the guy would come in with a good grasp of Heupel's offense since Golesh runs a similar version.
It's the problem in a nutshell. You'd be "stealing" from another program--even from a friend--but you'd likely be offering the student athlete a significant financial opportunity... BUT, maybe not a long-term developmental opportunity.

As currently constituted, the NIL era incentivizes the wrong things. For students and families it incentivizes short-term financial gain over building something over several years including lifetime relationships, and it incentivizes the crippling of smaller programs to keep the larger programs fed with talent that it "might" need to use.

My thinking is just to find someone who has experience with the Veer and Shoot or something close to what we run. There's limited time before Sept and while I think Merk can probably start after sitting a year, we've seen that in game situations QBs struggle to make the right reads.

I just know Golesh runs a very similar offense (with very limited success for those who miss him at OC.)

These are the primary objectives at this point in the process:

- Depth in the QB room
- Game experience
- Experience in similar offensive scheme
- Mature resilient leader that will be consistent positive influence on the QB room whether they start or not
- Do no harm to the developmental plans for Merk, McIntyre and Brandon

If you’re thinking we’re landing a top tier starting QB in this cycle you’ve lost your mind. Best you can hope for is they find another diamond in the rough like Hooker, but even that’s a reach at this point in the cycle.

Sports illustrated said Tennessee is doing it's due diligence on Dylan Rizk from UCF he has the talent for sure. I say bring him in have a qb battle.
I don’t think Heup is going to bring in a QB to have a “QB battle”. That would really be one hell of a punt if he did. Which I’m not necessarily against if it means we use that money on some stud recruits and portal guys in 26. He’s a competitor though and I would imagine he’s looking for a starter and I don’t think Rizk is that guy. He looks stiff when he moves and is way too stationary in the pocket. I think Murphy would be a better option than him

Interesting that both qbs who were a-holes about money are on this list and, apparently, not highly sought after.
