White just admitted........

Bottom feeders. Sludge sucking hire
Not really.
Had we hired him last year, I think people would react more favorably.

We’re basing a lot of our angst on basically outcomes resulting from a handful of plays. That’s a big no-no in predictive analytics.

He’s a “maybe” candidate- one that had a few plays gone differently is perhaps viewed as more of a sure thing (there are no sure things for Tennessee in the next 5 years)

I agree with the caveat that there WERE better coaches who wanted the job, but UT saw THEM as too risky. And we may very well end up suffering the consequences of that fear.
Tennessee wasn't willing to pay the amount of money it would have taken to land a better hire. We would have to go in the Saban salary stratosphere right now just to land a Franklin/Fleck caliber of coach. We are biting the bullet in the short run, so we can hopefully go bigger in 5 years when looming NCAA sanctions are no longer hovering over the program. I feel like we are effectively writing off the short term as a loss. Everybody knows we will be doing this again in December of 2025.

CJH will be here until sanctions are over and we go out and make that big splash hire. I just hope he doesn't pull a rabbit out of his hat before then which would cause the admin to give him more money to stay

Let's be optimistic here. It is at least possible that Tennessee's next head football coaching hire will be a good one... and we might have a pretty good team in the 2030 season. I can't wait.

It would have made way more sense if you were going to take a chance on a hire to go with Chadwell, Leipold, Matt Entz, or Will Healy. It is what it is. I talk with my wallet and my wallet isn't going to be talking UT football for the foreseeable future.

I will never accept this hire if Jamey chadwell,, native Tennessean, lifelong volunteer fan as well as the reigning COACH OF THE YEAR award winner by the AP and Sporting News among others,,, was never offered the job

I would have liked the Chadwell hire. But White reasons for pause on it. Chadwell currently has one winning season in the FBS (previous success in FCS) and has never been a part of a P5 program, much less SEC. While I think Chadwell is a builder (which we need), Heupel has been a part of Oklahoma, Missouri, and three winning seasons with UCF. Not to mention “the devil you know” aspect of it when comparing the two.

If I were picking, I probably would have hired Chadwell. But I’m not the AD. I think both hires could have be right/wrong for different reasons. Time will tell.

I would have gone with Chadwell, but there is apparently recent NCAA baggage with him. Nothing was going to guarantee success right now... but this is still a very "Blah" hire.

That he wasn't even considering Heupel for this job.

ESPN also reporting what most "insiders" were saying. We were flat rejected by all the coaches White thought were better than Heupel.

UCF's Heupel named Tennessee's next coach
Of course. Only the dumbest fanbase in America couldn't have known this was gonna be the case. I just wonder how many more years of being somewhere between mediocre and a dumpster fire before our delusional fanbase loses their sense of entitlement.

There are a lot of people with connections on both sides of these conversations (UT and the various candidates) that are saying that Heupel was down the list... no better than 4th. This was most likely a default hire. May be good. May be bad. But the UT job was already a tough sell and is even more so with potential NCAA issues.

I think the biggest factor in not landing a big fish was the NCAA issues. It is historically proven that UT can win and win big with the right coach. TN is becoming a more furtile recruiting area and is within a short drive to other talent rich areas.

Way to spin it. He clearly said it was because he didn't want to take the head coach away from the program he just left. It wasn't because he doesn't think highly of him.

This. I heard AD White say specifically on the local news that he had one, and only one name, on his prospective coaching list. Good grief... give it a rest.

Right. What this means is nobody was sent a contract to sign. But lots of coaches were reached out to to see if they wanted the job. this is a fact already reported on. And I absolutely believe he didn't have a pre-conceived idea of who he would hire..... including Heupel.
A lot of coaches were vetted by the search firm. That does not mean they were offered. That is the beauty of having a search firm. Coaches with NCAA were never in the discussion at Tennessee. This is the way it should have been conducted and thank God it is the way it was carried out.

1. Jeff Fisher was ready to talk. Nobody hit dude up
2. The University of Tennessee ain't hard to sell no matter what barrel we're staring down.
3. Tee shoulda got an interview no matter what, NOT because of race but because of LOYALTY
4. This new AD is really trying us

Fake news. Heupel was #1 target. If you listened to the press conference you heard it from a first hand resource.

I listened to the press conference and what I heard was "I didnt want to steal him from UCF" and "I didnt consider him until very recently" which is all a polite way of saying he wasn't initially considered. Because if you REALLY want that guy then you go and get him immediately instead of flying all over the country talking to coaches you have no intention of hiring. I guarantee if Heupel was offered the job when White was hired he would have immediately accepted it. He's only making 4 million which is entry level money in the SEC. You dont give your #1 target entry level money. You give them 1st round NFL draft money. He wasn't the guy, I'm convinced of it.

He talked to the greatest coaches in America and realized he had the best one down at UCF.

I think White questioned the ethics of hiring Heupel and he was a fall back option. We were turned down by coaches who White said he didn't offer. My bet is Franklin will try to get a raise out of it, but he also knew how hard a job this would be under the circumstance. If you do not like Heupel the fans would not like Fleck. He also was not offered and turned it down LOL. Elliot is an intriguing name, in 10 years he may be the better coach, Today if UT hired him the UTAD would have to deal with player attrition, NCAA problems, a fan base in a deep gloomy apathy, and TRAIN him up to be a head coach. The other coaches like freeze and Kiff was not going to happen. Kiff is very talented and he has grown up since his 1 year tenure to football hell. He was not hired because of petty revenge but because he still has a stink around him from his earlier NCAA problems. He is like milk in a grocery store refrigerator, he has an expiration date. His dream job fired him because they were tired of his antics. Saban at Bama was tired of him and he beat Saban to the draw of firing him by taking the FL Atlantic job. He left FAU while he was still desirable. Ole Miss like Auburn will never change, they do what they do until they are caught. They do their time and take their punishment and return to what they do. Kiffin fits right in, but he is a royal pain in the butt and odds are he will have to move on when they tire of him to another job after his ole Miss expiration date is reached.

Not saying he's gonna be the same....but Saban was a "default" hire when Rich Rod turned Alabama down. You just never know.

I strongly believe this....had he been here the last 3-4 years with the talent Jones/Pruitt have had, UT's W/L record would have been considerably better.

I definitely think in the context of the situation he meant "I didn't want to hire him (because he was early in his career at UCF--where I hired him to succeed with the program), but he was just too good to pass up."

I think he has confidence in his man. And that's a good thing.

I just listened to Josh Ward on the Locked on Vols podcast. He basically called White a flat out liar and said everyone in the room realized what the situation really was.

John Ward: "That's just really not true. I think everybody recognizes that's the case. Just because Heupel was the only coach offered doesn't mean he was the first choice for the job"

No where near what White said. White stated that he only offered the job to one man and that was Heupel. Although he spoke with multiple, the only one he was comfortable with was Josh. The reason for not wanting Josh was because he didn’t want to hurt the UCF players.
Who signs his ****ing paycheck? I get his loyalty to those players, and to an extent it is admirable, but this is business. And if it bothered him that much he should not have called CJH. That was an asinine thing to say.

This. People really will believe anything they are fed. "My job is to make Tennessee a winner as fast as possible but I'm not going to hire the coach I think is the best because I dont want to hurt UCF"

Yeah, f'ing right. 100% made up by White.
