What QB do you want from the transfer portal next year?

I’d take Nico back if Jerry Neuhiesel came with him. Call me crazy but if Heupel isn’t ready to rock with Merk / GMac next year and wants the starter to come via the portal, go talk to Nico.

The one thing Heupel thrives on is having a QB for multiple seasons. I think it’s clear Nico is gonna play 2 more years.

Obviously Big Nick needs to be told he can’t be involved with any negotiations or talks. That would be my one demand from the Tennessee side. Nico definitely isn’t getting that money back from us so we’d have leverage on a very low number.
Eh I dono man....I watched Indiana make him look like a little b**** today

I don't ever see that happening. I think that bridge has already been burnt to the ground.

Not really. The issue in the locker room would have been had we given into his demands to avoid him leaving in the spring.

But that didn't happen and he went elsewhere, got less money, and it hasn't worked out. So if we have to replace Aguilar and don't want to roll with a rookie, that's what I would do. But if and only if his dad is told to go pound sand and obviously his deal is drastically way less.

Nico may very well enter the portal if Nueheisel isn't kept with the new staff at UCLA and he won't be able to command a lot.

From a business decision - Heupel getting an experienced QB in general with experience of his system, the price could be right. Tennessee would have virtually all the leverage and Nico would have none.
Nico was getting trashed last night by the broadcasters, Nico instead of possibly entering the draft at the end of the season if he had stayed is now likely going to be a QB for hire at lower quality schools. Only reason Nico is talked about now is because he was the $8mil man that, tried to hold his team hostage and wound up in basically a QB trade and his replacement is putting up numbers.

As for experience in Heupel system, his system has changed, TN is running more Pro sets and WR running actually routes instead of doing the dead side of the field we did early in his tenure. Nico has nothing to offer at this point.

I've had people leave our business for what they view as better opportunities and comeback because it didn't work out and they produce just as they did before they left. But sure, let's make up analogies.....

As long as you win, no one cares. And the Nico experience here came with a 11-3 record. And there is no rational is saying rolling dice with a freshman QB would somehow be a better choice over reuniting with a former player under certain conditions.

And once again in your analogy, just say you don't care about production / continuity.
That 11-3 record was more because of Sampson and our defense, not Nico. Even the announcers last night talked about how Nico wasn't able to make those plays.

If Nico was the LeBron of football that took his talents to another team and was winning and wanted to come back maybe people would turn a blind eye, but he's not.

As for rolling with a freshman QB, I think those days are about over, teams will be using the portal for quality QB's

I hope Merk stays and we have a true race for QB1 with all 3. I doubt we are going to find anyone better than Merk in the portal that is willing to be a backup potentially. I feel like GMAC might win it.

Probably none but I wouldn’t recruit high school qbs anymore. Brandon would be the last one I recruit. No reason to gamble on one that might be a bust anyway. Pay for the proven commodity.
Could not agree more. No way I would spend the money on unproven talent. Nico bust, arch bust. Joey had no stars in HS and look at him.

I'd rather go 0-12.

I've really become enamored with the Aguilar/Pavia/Mateer types. They don't have the greatest measurables, but they're tough, gritty and winners who make everyone around them better. Guys with chips on their shoulders. Another plus is they won't create a huge imbalance in NIL expenditures. More money for oh...I dunno...some defensive backs that don't tackle like little girls?

Sounds like slavery.

Girls would tackle better than we do so....
End of the season. I'd be hitting the film room hard looking at what guys I can bring in, Banks would be on the hot seat too
Next season adds a 9th conference game. We can't have a defense next year like the one we have this year.

Over exaggeration, but I get your point.

Also, we did come out of Starksville and Lexington with a W instead of the L you predicted. It aint ideal obviously, but this is what we are this year and we are exactly what most everyone predicted to this point.

And our offense is humming. For a second straight week, our defense has held the opposing team to less than 50% scoring drives on their possessions with 5/12.

The defense is capable of making stops / forcing turnovers early on that make the game out of reach.

Offense just has to be average at minimum.

yes because that UCLA team was just as talented and comparable to the type of roster and team we have. And even the coaches aren’t as good as ours.

I for one can’t fathom why Nico would have poor performance on the road vs Indiana with an interim staff and a roster like UCLA’s 😂😂😂😂
If you want him back you haven’t watched much football. Kid was lost and had 0 football smarts. We’d be just as good sticking with one of the ones we currently have. Nico was a bust. Bringing him back a 2nd time doesn’t change that.

Ah yes because a UCLA squad on the road against the #2 team with an interim stripped down staff and roster after a firing is totally comparable to the depth and talent Heupel has built at Tennessee.
You keep using thus argument which is silly. He never looked any better than mediocre here, if that. Even when surrounded with all that “depth and talent”.

11-3 record in his first calendar year of playing.

He’s now experienced and had multiple years in a S&C program and guess what, would have zero learning curve while getting LESS dollars than what he initially was.

Just say you have hurt feelings instead of saying “he’d be awful here”…. The record doesn’t back that up.
Cherry pick a record much? You can thank the D for that record.
