What Other Message Boards Are Saying: Georgia Tech Edition

I thought the "why are we drug testing at this point in the season anyways?" quote was pretty good.

This is what worries me more than anything else in this game.

I will never forget a few years ago Butch was asked by a member of the media if he would need to change his coaching mentality/philosophy to adapt to the SEC. Butch's response was "No, football is football. No matter what level it's played at."

Butch is stubborn. He HAS to know to coach this game differently than any other game. I don't care if he thinks his coaching philosophy is the right one (side note: it isn't), he needs to have a very different mindset about clock management and defensive formations for this game.

"Gentlemen, touchdowns follow good blocking as surely as night follows day. " The General

Football is as complex or as simple as one needs it to be. You physically beat the guy in front of you and execute your assignments. If you trust your teammates and they're doing the same thing you win. CBJ is correct in this IMO, football is football. When you have to start scheming to make up for holes or gaps in your talent as compared to your opponent that's when it becomes a coach's game IMO.

Why don't we just make GA Tech go 3 & out?

That should keep our Defense fresh, don't ya think?

I keep seeing the word "gimmicky" thrown around as a way to describe GTs offense. Ok cool. But why not call it outdated? Remember when the spread was introduced to cfb just a little over a decade ago what was it called? Gimmicky. Point is is that they feel it works for them. CBJ may be right in saying that we will still run our HUNO offense. Maybe he's confident in our defense. And confident in our offense as well. What if we score quickly doing what WE DO? And force them to 3 and outs on the first fee possessions. I bet this is his approach.

Now. Another angle. Lets be happy GT runs this "gimmicky" offense. Could you imagine what an average coach....hell even Tubberville could work wonders in ATLANTA if he switched to a modern offense. Fertile recruiting grounds and could still sell potential NFL to prospects.

Let us all rejoice that they are stuck in the stone ages. And go out there and slap em around and make em respect Tennessee.

31-16 Big orange.

Why do we want to slow down? That is not our identity..we are up tempo for Tech or whoever.

It's not a triple option if you don't throw it, it's a double option, with about 3/4 completions a game offense. Defend accordingly.

This offense is the best for GT. We can't get the high recruited kids like factories. We need to run what we do so we can stay competitive.

As a Tech fan, I disagree that we need to run an offense like this, but it definitely helps. No matter what type of system we run we will always run up against limitations in recruiting (our academics will always be an issue for a lot of kids), so there is absolutely a benefit to using a system that balances the scales a bit. We were still competitive under Gailey, and would have been VERY formidable if we actually had an OC with a few brain cells. How the hell do you lose an ACC Championship to Wake Forest 9-6 when you have Calvin Johnson and Tashard Choice on offense, a stifling Jon Tenuta defense, and the best punter in the country? damn it, I still get angry thinking about that game

There is more plays then what you just said. Counters, QB follows ect.

One mo' time (thought Tech grads had more than the usual amount of synapses firing?) it's not a triple option if you don't throw it, it's a double option. The QB keeps the ball behind or at the LOS or hands it to someone else behind or at the LOS. Defend accordingly.

The 'triple' in triple option actually comes from these three options: immediate handoff to fullback diving through the line off-center ... QB keeper ... or pitch out to the tailback. [Ga Tech calls these guys the A and B back now, not sure which is which...when I was at Army, terminology was fullback and tailback]

Pull-up passes, counters, and wide-out reverses are additional levels of complexity, but those three were the basis of the classic triple option, I'm pretty sure.

Georgia Techs offense is just like ours. They run into a fair number of three and outs themselves. Why don't they change to protect their offense from our high scoring offense?

See it works both ways.

It's worth mentioning that I was listening to Erik Ainge this morning and a caller from the Atlanta area called in. The caller said Tech fans are ecstatic about this team and their performance Monday. They seem to feel the sky is the limit for them this year.

This is very consistent with the post-game talk on their boards.

Just something I found interesting.

They should be. If they can improve on the turnovers, special teams, and defense, they should be very competitive.

Ga Tech faces 5 teams in the top 25 and 9 bowl teams from last year. That's a top 15 strength of schedule. Doubt they'll improve over last year's record. That QB's health will dictate their success.

They will. Georgia Tech is going 10-2 in the regular season and will win the ACC Championship. Right now I have them losing only one game the rest of the way (@ Duke).

But, their defense is pathetic that's why they played keep away all night which they won't be able to do with teams that can defend their running game better. Beating Tech is simple, stop the run make them throw to win, get thier offense off the field before they score a TD, make them punt or kick a FG. There will be at least 3 or 4 maybe 5 teams on their schedule that can do that better than UT.

GT isn't winning any championships with that defense. You''ll understand after they struggle to stop Jacksonville St. this weekend. They won't get to face a team that struggles to score early every week.

Jacksonville State is a good FCS program. They nearly beat Auburn 2 years ago and gave LSU all they could handle for one half last year.

I expect Jacksonville State to keep it close for 2-3 quarters.

Not all fanbases look for an opportunity to bash their team and starting qb. Some actually see the positives on which to build even in a loss instead of seizing the opportunity sow dissension. I'm sure that's a novel concept to many around here.
