What is the Pitt game telling us...

Next week should be a good game and could easily go either way. Our running game looked really good tonight but wasn't overly impressed with Hooker's performance against what I would call a cupcake. One thing for sure is we WILL know what level of team we have after this upcoming game. Hopefully we can put huge pressure of the Pitt QB. Our defense is going to have to tighten up quite a bit from tonight's performance.

Pitt was extremely lucky winning that game. WV driving for a potential game winning FG and a wide open receiver muffs a perfect pass and it gets returned for a TD. Pure luck. Pitt is nowhere close to as good as last year.
Pitt was even more lucky when their coach decided to punt on 4th and 1 from midfield as Pitt wasn’t stopping WV’s big tailback all game. Could have potentially gone up 2 scores and iced the game. Instead punted and 4 plays later Pitt was at midfield.

Describe the physical play? Was it West Virginia running it down their throat where they were physical or their offensive line getting beat up to the tune of them averaging 2 yards per carry while giving up multiple sacks?

Keep in mind, WVA was a sub .500 team last year in a mediocre conference who got dominated by the likes of Kansas State and Minnesota last season.

I watched much of that game. When Pitt wanted to run the ball, they did. I think sacks hurt their rushing numbers.

Game kind of feels like the 2014 Oklahoma game. Going to be prime time ABC and one of the top games of week 2 after Pitt’s game and our high scoring game. Pitt will likely be ranked 15th or 16th. Most of the nation expects UT to lose this game. If we find a way to win I think it says a lot about coach Hype and what he can accomplish here. Kiffin, Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt were never able to win the high profile OOC game, time to see if Hype can do it.

Very possible that this isn’t a game by half next week. WVU gifted this game to Pitt, through a combination of coaching mistakes and a receiver not being able to catch a 15 yard pass. Pitt’s d-line is very active against the pass but man they are going to have a hard time with our receivers on the back end. They nearly gave up 200 yards rushing to a mediocre offensive line and a freshman running back. Bottom line is, they are slightly better than last year, at best, but doubtful. Tennessee would have won by 2 scores last year had Milton not overthrow touchdown passes by 15 yards. Tennessee is definitely a better team this year on both sides of the ball.
This Ball State team was pretty effective against us with the pass imo. Their DB’s were flying all over the field. I was surprised by that tbh. Hookers misfires didn’t help. We simply out talented them and ran it down their throats. Our WR’s are going to have to get open in space and HH has got to be on point next weekend or it’s gonna be a long night.

Their backs with more than one carry averaged 4.6, 1.9 and 2 ypc. They had 38 carries for 76 yards. Using sacks doesn't help either. You're basically claiming they were physical except the multiple times WVA whipped them up front and got to the QB. Even leaving the QB out, they ran it 31 times for just over 90 yards. Anemic for a team that some seem to see as physically dominant for reasons I don't see.

You said Ball St DBs were flying all over the field. Tennessee completed 77% of their passes for 352 yards. Not sure what you were watching.

Ball State played bail coverage all night and when the we in man they only played man under. They didn’t want to get beat deep and the didn’t. Henson took what was given and still threw for over 200 on short fields. Anyway, Narduzzi can’t line up in man against us or we will run through their defense just like last year. Pittsburg is not a better team than they were last year. UT will beat them and WVU should have.

We played walk ons!!! Sorry we allowed yards with our 3rd and 4th string players in
Ball State wasn't playing its starters at that point either. WVU wasn't playing its 2nd string vs Pitt. Pitt got 1st string against a much better team than Ball State, and the numbers are similar. If Pitt got steam rolled so did we.

Sure, and we also beat Va Tech at Bristol, but neither of those teams were ranked or considered to be really good teams the years we beat them. I’m talking about teams like the Oregons, Oklahomas, West Virginias, and Pitt last year. Teams that were top ranked or went on to have really good seasons, not just P5 OOC teams.

A lot of short to intermediate passes. Tackles right after the catch. Little break-away tackles. The long ball was virtually nonexistent.
And yet UT still managed 600 yards and 59 points…they don’t plan to score on every play and you could see the tempo starting to take effect at the end of the first half and the first drive of the second half. The long ball was none existent because Ball State didn’t line up in man very often. They were prepared to keep the ball in front and still got beat by 49.

Nah man, let the people show they don't understand that we slept walked through a game and won it by 49 points.
