Well, to beat Florida we'd have to simply play lights-out on every facet of the game, plus have the Gators make a few mistakes. Florida isn't completely unbeatable, but it'd take our full effort and then some to come home with the win.
1. Limit turnovers--this year's UCLA game and last year's UF game are shining examples. Don't fumble the football and don't let Crompton throw passes longer than 8+ yards (if even that long!).
2. Special Teams play--in last year's game Florida's special teams danced all around us on the field (i.e. the punt returned for a touchdown). We must contain them.
3. Field Position--I fully believe our Defense can slow down the Gators offense if not forced to defend a short field. That's what killed us in last year's game, as well. We must protect good field position by doing points 1 & 2 above--not committing turnovers and playing good special teams. Give our woeful offense a short field to put up some points and make the Gators earn their points by driving it down our D.
4. Pound the Rock--we MUST strongly assert the run game if we wish to have a chance. Hardesty and Brown must continue to punish defenders and fight for the tough yards while wearing down the D. Run, run, run, and pass only if we must.
5. Safe Pass Plays--regardless if Crompton or Stephens plays we can only do quick, safe pass plays that involve VERY little thinking if we wish to have a serviceable offense. Like point #4, we should only pass when needed. Hot routes to TEs, quick slants to WRs, play action with roll-outs and dump-offs to the FB and RB. Pass just enough to keep the Gator D honest and keep the run game open.
6. Play Physical--I feel our Defense is much more physical than the Gators offense, but I also feel our offense is going to get owned unless we come out and out-muscle the Gators on the line of scrimmage. The Gators should have a tough time up the middle on our D, but our ends may be vulnerable due to their speed--have to hope Berry and Jackson can fly around the LOS enough to bring down their speedsters. On offense, our O-Line needs to help out Hardesty and Brown and hold their blocks at least long enough for our RBs to make it through the hole.
7. Smart Defense--we need to shut down the run, and contain the pass. Don't make stupid mistakes and penalties that prolong drives. Make good adjustments and bring pressure. Another key here is, again, field position. Make the Gators drive 75+ yards for their points and we can make it a game. Give it to them at midfield or better, and it'll be a long, long day for the Vols defense.
